Chapter 145

Author: Cotton
Jack didn't respond.

Jessie knew better than anyone what three years in prison meant. She hadn't come out broken or resigned to her fate.

Instead, she had pushed herself in every way possible, determined to live like everyone else.

She put away her phone, leaned back on the sofa, and looked out the window. "I just worry that maybe they were right, that after prison, I really can't do anything anymore."

"You worked on a lot of things there, didn't you? You picked up plenty of high-tech skills. You're not out of touch with the world, and you're definitely not useless." Jack's voice was calm.

Jessie smiled a little. "At least York Enterprise doesn't discriminate against me, and neither do you guys. You still come to me with projects. That makes me really happy."

Jack's expression softened.

Smiling, he asked, "So as long as you've got a project to work on, you're happy?"

"Yeah. When I was inside, whenever I got to take on a project, I learned so much. Before that, when I wasn't all

"We only found out on the way to pick you up." Jack was still catching his breath when he added that.Jessie gave him a speechless look for a moment. She then turned around to walk off.Jack teased her a little. When he saw her sulking, he laughed and hurried over to stand in her way. "Come on, get in my car."Jessie had actually planned to ride with Ronny.Seeing the two of them bickering like that, Ronny chuckled. He quickly slipped into his own car and called out, "Looks like Jessie would rather believe we're really here just to pick her up.""I would not!" Jessie uttered immediately."Stop teasing her," Jack turned around and warned Ronny.Ronny only smiled without replying.Jack opened the car door and stood behind it as he looked at Jessie. "Getting in or not?"Jessie let out a long sigh but still gave in and got into the car.Jack was about to shut the door when a hand suddenly grabbed it from the side.Mark leaned in toward Jessie and said, "You just got back from yo

The trip to Turnaria ended in the blink of an eye.Back in Rossenville City, Jessie rolled her small suitcase straight to York Enterprise. She hadn't brought much with her on the trip, just a backpack with some clothes. Everything else had been arranged by Jack and the others once she got there. The moment Yale saw her return, he stood up and asked curiously, "So, how was Turnaria? I've traveled around a lot, but I've never been overseas.""Didn't really do much sightseeing. It was mostly work. If you ever go there as a tourist, you should try having a meal inside Veronna Palace. Not bad at all." Jessie pushed her suitcase to her desk and sat down. After opening it, she retrieved a box of coffee and handed it to Yale. "Didn't you say you liked coffee? I got this for you. And here, chocolates too."She retrieved another box. Yale's face lit up in surprise.Yale accepted the coffee and chocolates before beaming. "I can't believe you actually thought of me while you were away!""T

"Could it have been Mia?" Mark asked. He grew more and more disgusted with Mia.She did something so wrong, and even now she didn't have the courage to admit it.Henry shook his head. "I'm not sure. That's why I came to you. See if there's another angle. Like back then, did you ever meet the victim's family or anything?""My parents handled it. How would I know–" Mark scratched his head."The only option is to pull the surveillance from back then."Henry finished speaking and patted Mark's shoulder. "If anything comes to mind, let me know.""Got it. Let's start digging."Mark couldn't even remember the details anymore. All he knew was that Mia had run home, sobbing hysterically and saying she'd killed someone in a hit-and-run. At the time, he threw everything into protecting her. He even begged his parents to help. In the end, the whole family pinned it on Jessie.Mark smacked himself hard across the face at the thought.Henry might have said he didn't look down on Jessie, but

Mark completely lost it. "No! I have to go to Turnaria. Her phone isn't with her. I'm afraid she's been tricked and trafficked!"He grabbed Henry's phone and was about to leave when Henry yanked him back."Why are you so hot-headed? I haven't even explained the situation to him yet, and you already scared the guy into hanging up. He might not even answer if we call again," Henry said with a frown.Mark snatched the phone right out of his hand before Henry could react. For the first time, Henry realized just how bad Mark's temper could be.Mark was frantic and completely beside himself. "How am I supposed to stay calm? You called my sister, she didn't answer, and some guy picked up instead! No way. I'm booking a flight to Turnaria right now!""Calm down!" Henry grabbed hold of him."How do you expect me to calm down? My sister's in their hands, and she's overseas. If something happens, how are we even supposed to track her down?" Mark was practically jumping with anxiety.Henry's

Jessie had been at the best point in her life. She trusted everyone in the Stewart family when they forced her into prison. As a result, she missed the best college, and her future was ruined."Don't bring it up again. Her story is hers to tell. We don't talk about it," Jack said. His words put Ronny in a bad mood."The Stewarts should pay," Harry muttered."They will, sooner or later," Jack replied. First on the list was Mia."Henry's looking into that accident years ago. Want us to give him a little nudge?" Ronny asked."Mark's on Jessie's side now. Let's hide the part about Mia hitting someone for the moment. Let Henry waste his time on that. A slow, dull knife is the most painful," Jack answered.Ronny understood Jack's intention right away. "Jessie has suffered enough. Mia should feel some of it too. She shouldn't just stroll into prison and have everything be fine.""Let her taste what it's like to be abandoned by everyone," Ronny said with a scheming grin."Do as you se

Jessie let her guard down completely. She laughed so hard her stomach hurt as she leaned against Jack.Ronny and Harry were chuckling too. When she finally stopped laughing, she said, "I knew you were scared. That's why we didn't finish it. I wonder, if we went to an escape room, and you died of fright, what would I do?""You really think that little of me?" Jack's expression was blank.Jessie slipped out of his arms, turned around, and looked at him. "You don't have to try everything. Don't go if you're scared. For example, I'm afraid of heights, so I never do extreme sports."Henry used to love high-altitude activities. He was always going for them. Mia would join too.But Jessie was afraid, so whenever they went, she could only stay home."Have you just been teasing me all night?" Jack chuckled.Jessie smiled. "No. At first, I really didn't know you were scared of horror movies. Otherwise, I'd have picked sci-fi.""That's why it's always better to be honest, don't you agree
