Chapter 148

Author: Cotton
Harry caught the blame in her eyes and immediately felt guilty. "Jessie, I won't do it again, I promise."

Jack walked over to the sink, turned on the faucet, and held his bleeding finger under the running water.

Jessie saw a piece of skin about the size of a fingernail flipped up. She quickly looked away. She couldn't stand the sight. It made her feel queasy.

"Go do your own thing," Jack said calmly while deliberately avoiding her gaze.

"That cut is deep. Was the knife too sharp? Maybe we should go to the hospital. You don't want to risk tetanus." Jessie sounded worried.

"It'll be fine once I disinfect it. The medical system here isn't like back home. By the time I'd get a doctor, this cut would've healed on its own." Jack spoke with a smile.

"Really?" Jessie recalled that medical care abroad was better.

"Not anymore. The last couple of years, things have gone downhill. If the Manger family hadn't expanded business here, we'd rather stay home. It's a lot more convenient," Harry

Jessie had been at the best point in her life. She trusted everyone in the Stewart family when they forced her into prison. As a result, she missed the best college, and her future was ruined."Don't bring it up again. Her story is hers to tell. We don't talk about it," Jack said. His words put Ronny in a bad mood."The Stewarts should pay," Harry muttered."They will, sooner or later," Jack replied. First on the list was Mia."Henry's looking into that accident years ago. Want us to give him a little nudge?" Ronny asked."Mark's on Jessie's side now. Let's hide the part about Mia hitting someone for the moment. Let Henry waste his time on that. A slow, dull knife is the most painful," Jack answered.Ronny understood Jack's intention right away. "Jessie has suffered enough. Mia should feel some of it too. She shouldn't just stroll into prison and have everything be fine.""Let her taste what it's like to be abandoned by everyone," Ronny said with a scheming grin."Do as you se

Jessie let her guard down completely. She laughed so hard her stomach hurt as she leaned against Jack.Ronny and Harry were chuckling too. When she finally stopped laughing, she said, "I knew you were scared. That's why we didn't finish it. I wonder, if we went to an escape room, and you died of fright, what would I do?""You really think that little of me?" Jack's expression was blank.Jessie slipped out of his arms, turned around, and looked at him. "You don't have to try everything. Don't go if you're scared. For example, I'm afraid of heights, so I never do extreme sports."Henry used to love high-altitude activities. He was always going for them. Mia would join too.But Jessie was afraid, so whenever they went, she could only stay home."Have you just been teasing me all night?" Jack chuckled.Jessie smiled. "No. At first, I really didn't know you were scared of horror movies. Otherwise, I'd have picked sci-fi.""That's why it's always better to be honest, don't you agree

The bubbling pot and the sound of food being dipped in and lifted out filled the room.It was Jessie's first time eating like this, and it was also her first time sharing it with friends. For the first time, she realized how beautiful life could be. Preparing food together, sitting around a pot, and watching a movie was simple but so comfortable. While Jessie was absorbed in the film, Jack's hand was tense as he held the fork.Ronny dropped some beef slices into the pot and nudged Jack. "You're sitting the closest. Fish it out for her."Jack silently picked up the ladle, scooped up the beef, and placed it on Jessie's plate."Thanks." Jessie glanced at him.He looked oddly stiff, which made her pause before she asked, "Are you scared of horror movies?""Don't be ridiculous," Jack shot back immediately.Jessie just hummed, dipped the beef into some sauce, and went back to eating while watching intently.Ronny leaned toward Jack and whispered in his ear, "Sure, act tough. Just d

"I can't remember what she said. How did she cross the line?" Jessie asked out of curiosity."At the time, I didn't believe you were some guy's mistress. But the way she spoke was deliberately leading me in that direction. Once I realized her intent, I made up my mind."Jack's gaze was dark and locked on Jessie. He added, "Tell me, shouldn't someone like that be dumped right on the street?"Feeling embarrassed by his stare, Jessie looked away. She hadn't expected that the reason he "broke up" with that woman was related to her."Thank you."No matter what, she still owed him thanks, even if they came late."No need to thank me." Jack dragged out his words. There was a playfulness to his tone. After a short while, Ronny returned with the first-aid kid.As soon as he walked in, he grabbed Jack's hand and frowned. "Looks like you won't be able to help tonight. Jessie, can you take care of him for me?""Of course," Jessie agreed right away. She wasn't doing much in the kitchen a

After hearing what they said, Jessie felt some of her unease disappear."I'll try to adjust. I promise I won't hold up your work again tomorrow." She hadn't expected herself to sleep all the way until nightfall."It's fine. I just didn't think it through. I only wanted to help you get a good night's sleep and didn't consider your situation. If you need more time to adjust, just stay here a few more days. We've got plenty of room. It's my family's place after all." Ronny waved it off, sounding lighthearted. But deep down, he was beating himself up. He felt like he really had no filter. His careless words had left Jessie feeling both guilty and uneasy.Honestly, bringing her here wasn't just about work."Don't listen to him. You just got to a new country. It takes time to adjust," Jack said as he cut into his steak. He sounded a little irritated."Jet lag is rough. Focus on your health first. Besides, we're all your friends. What kind of friends would be harsh on each other?" Harry
