Chapter 8

Penulis: Cotton
Mark's expression changed, but he still felt irritated on the inside. "Mom, she did it on purpose. She's got a mouth, doesn't she? Couldn't she just ask?"

"Mark, we owe your sister an apology."

Laura's face was full of sorrow. She opened her mouth like she wanted to say more.

Jessie lowered her gaze as if she hadn't heard.

She didn't need any late apologies, especially not from people with crocodile tears.

"I'm going back to my room."

With that, she turned and headed to the maid's room.

The next morning, Jessie came downstairs just in time to hear Mia's cheerful voice.

"Jessie, did you sleep well last night?"

Mia was walking down from the upstairs landing. Her gaze fell on Jessie with unmasked malice.

"I figured you'd sleep well. I mean, even the maid's room is a hundred times better than a prison cell, right?"

Jessie stepped out and calmly shut the door behind her. She had, in fact, slept well last night. It was probably the most peaceful sleep she'd had in a long time.

Jack leaned against the elevator wall. His tone was flat. "I don't think what I believe changes anything."Jessie thought he was right. She had to swallow the truth and keep it buried. No matter how wronged she felt, she had to endure it.As they exited the elevator, Jessie followed Jack and began talking about her time in prison. "Every single thing had to be done at the exact same time every day. The only moments I felt time was really passing were during yard time and rest."Jack slowed his pace a little. He turned to glance at her.Jessie's face was bare. There was no makeup and no expression of joy or sadness. "When I studied C Language, whenever I thought of something that wasn't about that place, it felt like I was still alive."Jack pursed his lips. After a long moment, he finally said in a deep voice, "You have a real talent for this. At York Enterprise, you'll have plenty of opportunities to grow.""Thank you. I'll work hard."Jessie genuinely appreciated that he didn

Jessie responded vaguely but didn't move.Timothy grew a little impatient. When he turned to look at her, he noticed her face was pale. She looked like she'd been frightened. He frowned. "Did you have a nightmare?""No." Jessie gripped the edge of the couch and took slow breaths.Timothy glanced at her. "The airport only allows 15 minutes on the tarmac. Don't drag your feet."Jessie steadied herself on the couch and stood up.The close-up of Timothy's face right as she woke had genuinely startled her. Back in prison, it had happened many times. People would stare at her while she slept. They then beat her senseless once the night guards left. She was often ambushed just like that. After disembarking, Timothy led Jessie to a black sedan, told her to get in first, and went back to pick up Jack. While she waited, Jessie messaged Frank, asking what exactly she was supposed to do on this business trip.Meanwhile, Timothy had just reached the plane when he saw Jack already coming do

"I'll reimburse you, alright? Head over there first. I'll transfer the money to you later. Whatever's left, you can keep as spare change," Frank said. After hearing that, Jessie let out a sigh of relief. Even her tone softened considerably."Thank you, Mr. Lewis. I'll head to the airport now."At the airport, she sat in the waiting area. It was still early, but there were already quite a few people around. After a short while, she received a message from Frank.Jessie frowned when she read it.He told her that someone would welcome her once she arrived in Jefferville City. She did believe that a large company wouldn't be stingy with such expenses, but she had also heard that reimbursement processes in big corporations could take forever. She'd likely have to pay out of pocket for toiletries or daily essentials once she got there. She sighed at the thought. She didn't have much money to begin with. She wasn't sure if she could even afford a proper change of clothes once she arriv

Jessie looked coldly at Mark. "Exactly what it sounds like. Is your vocabulary that limited?"Mark's breathing grew heavy."Who are you to talk to me like that? Aren't you more disgusting? You broke off the engagement with Henry, yet you still let him drive you back. Don't tell me you weren't trying to seduce him."As soon as those words left his mouth, Bruce and Laura's expressions changed instantly.Jessie suddenly laughed sarcastically."Figures. A filthy mind sees filth everywhere. I take back what I said earlier."Before he could feel relieved, Jessie continued coldly, "You're even more disgusting than I thought."Mark's expression turned dark in an instant.Bruce snapped, "Jessie! How can you speak to Mark like that? Apologize to him!"Laura chimed in and tried to calm both sides down."Jessie, it's true that Mark's words were a bit much, but he's only saying this for your own good. It's best if you keep your distance from Henry."Jessie looked coldly at Bruce."Can y

The car didn't stop for long. It soon turned around and sped off. When Jessie returned to the villa, the maids gave her subtle, probing glances upon seeing her come back alone. She returned directly to the maid's room and shut the door. After taking a shower, she came out and picked up her phone. On the screen was the message she had sent before going into the bathroom.[The chess set is beautiful. Joe loved it. Let me know how much it cost so I can pay you back.]There was no reply. Perhaps he hadn't seen it yet.Jessie didn't mind. She opened a website and began skillfully taking on tasks.Knocks on the door interrupted her. She closed the website and got up to open the door."Miss, Mr. Stewart asked me to call you over," the maid said, casting her a strange look before turning to leave.Jessie walked into the living room. Bruce's expression was dark. As soon as he saw her, he started yelling."Why are you still standing there? Come here!"Jessie frowned slightly and repl

Henry sneered. "You called me Henry in front of Grandpa before, but now it's Mr. Lawson?"So I'm just someone you use and toss aside?"His second sentence was practically said through clenched jaws.Jessie frowned slightly. She thought Henry understood that she'd only acted that way before to get the engagement annulled smoothly.Wasn't that what he wanted too? Why was he speaking as if she was the heartless one?"Mr. Lawson, if there's nothing else, I'll be leaving now.""Jessie."Henry sounded frustrated. "Are you really going to be this distant with me?"Catching sight of Jessie's indifferent expression, Henry felt a wave of frustration rise in his chest. He sighed and softened his tone. "Forget it. Grandpa asked me to take you home. You wouldn't want me to go against his request, would you?"Jessie was about to decline but stopped at the mention of Joe. "Sorry for the trouble."A flicker of displeasure appeared in Henry's eyes. The two walked in silence toward the parking
