Derrick's POV

Watching Eliana go, I wished I could've punched myself in the gut. I was furious, not just with myself, but also at Susan.

Why the fuck did she have to call? And why did she choose that moment to be all lovey-dovey? Why couldn't she just be the cold stranger that she could be on some days?

I had half the mind to chase after Eliana but I thought against it, deciding it would be too embarrassing. I would approach her later on, when she was more willing to talk. Some of the people around had noticed us climbing out of the car and they'd also seen her running away. Some of them were now staring at me, eyes curious.

Hissing, I went back to my car and drove away. That night, I tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep. As it turned out, I got home earlier than Susan and it was almost an hour after I entered that I heard her car pulling into the house.

When I heard her coming up the stairs, I turned to face the other side of the bed and pretended to sleep.
