Chapter 3

Author: Stars
On my birthday, I received a call from Simon.

"It's inconvenient for Xandra to move around too much because of how big her belly is. I'll take her to the altar first. You can ride in the bodyguard's car."

I let out a self-deprecating laugh. It was expected. In Simon's eyes, nothing was more important than Xandra… Not even his own Luna.

By the time I arrived at the banquet, my birthday celebration was already in full swing. Simon held the arm of the pregnant Xandra as they moved through the guests, accepting blessings from them.

"Alpha Simon, Xandra is about three months along, right? Congratulations to both of you!"

"Xandra still looks radiant even when she's pregnant. Alpha Simon must have been taking good care of you."

"That's right. Hasn't Alpha Simon always spoiled Xandra since they were kids?"

"When your pup is born, don't forget to invite us to the pup's baby shower."

Amid the flood of blessings and congratulations, everyone forgot that I was the Luna. They even forgot that this banquet was my birthday party.

Wearing an exquisite custom-made gown, Xandra basked in the guests' compliments. She grew more and more smug with each passing moment. Her eyes darted toward me from time to time tauntingly.

I had already known that this birthday celebration was never meant for me. So, I turned to leave.

However, Xandra called out to stop me. "Oh my, Kaylee. Why did you arrive so late? I didn't even see you. Simon was worried I'd be uncomfortable in another car, so he insisted on picking me up himself. You won't hold it against me, will you?"

I gave a light laugh. "Why would I? If you like it so much, you can have it."

Just as I was about to leave, Simon grabbed my arm. "Kaylee, I held this banquet for you. How can you just leave?"

He pulled me into his arms and said softly, "You know how Xandra's family is. She needs my help. Don't be so petty."

Before I could respond, Xandra suddenly clutched her belly and cried, "Simon, my stomach hurts. It feels like the baby is kicking me."

Simon immediately let go of me and hurried over to help Xandra into a chair. He then gently massaged her belly. The heart-warming scene made it seem as though they were the real couple.

It was my birthday party, yet Simon said he didn't have time to order me a cake. Ironically, he had time to order a custom designer gown for Xandra.

Xandra enjoyed Simon's affection very much. She glanced at me from time to time as if to say, "So what if you're the Luna? The one Simon loves is obviously me."

I closed my eyes and forced back my tears. Only one day remained until the abortion. After that, I would leave him for good. I would leave the position of Luna to the person he cared about the most.

Halfway through the banquet, the doors to the hall suddenly burst open. Simon's mother, Annie Barnes, strode up to me and slapped me across the face without a word.

She shouted, "You shameless woman! How dare you cheat on Simon and get pregnant with another man's bastard pup! You've disgraced us!"

"That's not true!" I clutched my face and tried to argue.

Simon quickly stepped in front of me to shield me from Annie. At that moment, I thought he was about to tell everyone the truth.

But he said, "Mom, Kaylee made a mistake in a moment of confusion. I've already forgiven her. I will treat her pup as if it were my own."

His words only confirmed the rumor of my infidelity, and the surrounding guests began whispering judgmentally among themselves.

"Don't worry, Kaylee. No matter what you've done to hurt me, I won't blame you," Simon added.

I found what he said absolutely absurd.

So, I stepped closer and asked softly, "What did I do to hurt you? You've told so many lies that you've started to believe them yourself. Have you forgotten whose pup I am carrying in my belly?"

Simon froze. With all the guests present, he swallowed back the words he wanted to say.

However, Annie was furious and distressed on his behalf.

She snapped, "How can you be so foolish, Simon? Kaylee is a shameless woman who cheated on you. Why are you still defending her?"

Then, she turned to look at me with disdain. "A woman like you is unworthy of being the Luna. Get out of here! Get out of my house!"

Annie forcibly dragged me out of the banquet hall and threw me onto the street. The night was dark, and the street was empty. I shivered helplessly in the cold wind.

Just then, Simon sent me a message that consisted of only one short sentence, "Bear with it, Kaylee. When this is over, I will bring you back and clear the air."

I let out a cold laugh and turned off my phone. Not hesitating anymore, I booked a ticket to leave. Braving the freezing wind, I walked toward the hospital.

A month before our marking ceremony, Zachariah busied himself with every little thing related to our big day. He personally saw to everything from the arrangements to the schedule. He told me that all I needed to do was look beautiful and stun everyone on the day of the ceremony. We had chosen the Moonlight Altar, which was the most romantic place in the entire pack, to do our marking. On the day of the event, a joyful atmosphere settled upon the whole pack. Just as I was about to enter the altar, I noticed a familiar figure in the corner. Simon looked weathered and aged, like an old man. He hid in a dark corner and watched me in secret. The moment our eyes met, he quickly lowered his head. He seemed afraid that I would see him in such a sorry state."What are you looking at? The ceremony is about to begin," Zachariah said, taking my arm.I withdrew my gaze and said with a soft laugh, "It's nothing. It was just someone insignificant."With the Moon Goddess as our witness, we co

During the days Zachariah stayed in our pack, I was the one who showed him around and accompanied him. We walked along the beach and collected seashells in the glow of the sunset. We were both aware of each other's feelings. However, I had just ended a failed marriage and wasn't ready to start a new relationship yet.Zachariah confessed his feelings first. "Actually, I adored you from the moment I first saw you. I'll be leaving in a few days, and I hope to hear your answer before I go."I hesitated. After I spent some time with Zachariah, he had proven himself to be a gentle yet strong man. He was truly the kind of man a woman could depend on for life. Nevertheless, I still felt wary.My silence caused a flicker of disappointment to appear in his eyes. "That's all right. I'll wait until you're ready."I nodded appreciatively. But in the next second, my expression stiffened. It was because I saw someone I did not want to see."Kaylee, you never replied to my letters. So, I've com

"There's no way we will ever get back together. Don't bother me anymore. Go back to Xandra. Let's each live our own lives in peace," I said plainly.Simon hurried to explain, "I've already driven Xandra out. She will never disturb us or come between us again. I've also come clean with everyone that Xandra's pup is the real bastard. Please trust me one last time."He looked at me pitifully as if he were the most innocent victim. Anyone passing by would think that I was the unreasonable one, making things hard for him. When Dad saw that my words didn't seem to be getting through to Simon, he lost his patience. He lashed out and slapped Simon hard across the face. The force sent him staggering back by a considerable distance."If you dare to harass Kaylee again, I won't hold back!" Dad warned, standing in front of me like a towering wall, his presence fierce and unyielding.Simon slowly got to his feet and cast me a yearning look which indicated that he was highly reluctant to leave.

As soon as I stepped off the plane, I felt dizzy. Having just undergone an abortion and taken the potion, my body was extremely weak. The scene before my eyes grew increasingly blurry until everything went dark. When I regained my consciousness, the first thing I saw was my mother's eyes that had become absolutely swollen from excessive crying.Mom was sobbing uncontrollably. "You're my precious daughter, Kaylee. I've only ever spoiled you. How did you become so thin and frail after getting married for just a few years?"Dad punched the hospital wall in rage. "How dare that bastard hurt my daughter. I will never let Simon get away with this!"I slowly opened my eyes and whispered, "Dad… Mom."Upon hearing my voice, Mom hastily wiped away her tears and gently stroked my head. She said with relief, "My poor Kaylee, you're finally awake."I forced a weak smile.Mom said softly, "Don't be afraid, sweetie. Your Dad and I will always have your back. If Simon dares to hurt you again,

Simon ran to the hospital as fast as he could. But no matter where he searched, he could not find any trace of me. He fumbled for his phone and frantically called my number. He dialed my number countless times, but my phone was off.He questioned every doctor in the hospital, desperate for an answer. Finally, a young nurse on duty told him she had seen me undergo an abortion and then leave the hospital hurriedly. She informed him that my complexion had been exceptionally pale too.Upon hearing this, Simon's entire body went rigid. "No… This is impossible! She loves me so much! She wouldn't abort our pup so mercilessly. You must be lying to me. Kaylee must have told you to say this, didn't she? She's hiding somewhere and watching me make a fool of myself!"His eyes were bloodshot as he shouted at the trembling nurse, "Where did Kaylee go? Tell me!"The frightened nurse stammered, "I-If you don't believe me, we have records here. Check the register and you'll know whether Luna Kaylee

It was nearly dawn by the time I reached the hospital.Just then, Simon called. His voice was noticeably anxious as he asked, "Kaylee, I see you've booked a long-distance flight. Where are you going?"I pondered for a moment and decided that it was best to inform him about my departure since we were husband and wife, after all. "I'm leaving. Don't bother looking for me. We don't have to see each other again," I said.Simon sounded flustered as he kept asking me where I was going. I didn't answer, but from the other end of the line came Xandra's voice. She complained, "I don't feel well, Simon. I'm not sure if it will affect the pup or not. Hurry and take me to the hospital."Simon firmly believed that I loved him way too much to abandon him for real. He assumed that I was merely throwing a tantrum. After a moment of silence, he said, "Xandra is in critical condition. Go home first. I'll talk to you tonight when I get home."I ignored him. After hanging up, I walked into th
