“I can’t believe I’m here,” I sighed, smoothing my red hand-me-down dress.
I held the chocolate cake in my free hand. I made it earlier before I was invited to my Mother’s boyfriend’s house for a party.
I did not want to attend because Barnette’s children weren’t fond of me. They were high-class and sophisticated while I lived in a one-bedroom rat hole for my life. However, I couldn’t disappoint my Mother. She was convinced he was the love of her life.
“Here we go.”
I rang the doorbell at Barnette’s million-dollar mansion. I’d been to Barnette’s house three times, and each time was a different scenario. I just hoped I made it out of there alive. Barnette’s son, Storm, was the running back on the football team and part of a deadly trio of players, best friends with the quarterback and Alpha Heir, Maverick.
The front door finally opened, and I plastered on a smile. Loud music and laughter streamed out of the house. Anxiety clawed at me. I could imagine all the important people at this party.
Sienna scowled at me. “You. What the hell do you want? Charity?”
“Sienna… nice to see you—”
“Save it. No one invited the omega reject. This party is for elites only, not the girl who cleans the stadium grass.”
Her words sliced my heart even though I’d heard them before. Sienna was the captain of the cheerleading team for the Darciana Wildcats and the Pack’s golden girl.
I swallowed the lump in my throat. “M-my Mom told me to come over.”
“That slut of a Mother? This isn’t her house.” Sienna screamed in my face.
I balled my hands into fists and pulled the cake to my chest. Sienna would never like me. To her, I was encroaching on her sacred relationship with her Father, even though I tried to avoid her family like the plague.
“Look, I didn’t want to—”
“Who’s at the door, babe?”
A hand appeared on Sienna’s shoulder before a six-foot-one man appeared in the doorframe.
My tongue swelled, and my palms sweated. My pupils dilated, and every hair on my skin stood. It was Gage Ravens, the second member of the Wildcats Fab Three. How did I forget he was dating his best friend Storm’s twin sister? It was all anyone could talk about for a month!
The tabloids thought it would ruin their connection on the field, but it didn’t. Storm and Gage have known each other since they were in diapers, the same as Maverick. Their chemistry on the field was something that had been refined over the years to create the perfect deadly blow.
I looked away. I hoped they wouldn’t notice my laboured breathing. I stepped back as the air thickened with his scent.
“Who’s this?” Gage nodded at me.
I’d only seen him and his teammates at a distance, but up close, he was intimidating and more... However, when our eyes met, I couldn’t deny the fireworks. I was drawn to him like a sailor enchanted by a siren’s death song. I knew he’d lead me to disaster, but I wanted to fall into him anyway.
I had a problem.
“No one,” Sienna snapped. “If you’re waiting for your Mother, you’ll have to wait outside. No one wants the stench of dead rats in the house.”
“Sienna,” Storm scolded. “Let her in.”
“She doesn’t belong here, Storm. We’ve been over this,” Sienna placed a hand on her waist, rolling her eyes at her twin.
“Dad wants her here. Let her in,” Storm said firmly.
Storm leaned against the wall behind the couple. Unlike his twin sister, Storm had vibrant blue eyes that could compete with the enchantment of the sky.
“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t important to my Mother.”
Sienna scowled, “Whatever.” She marched off, and her brother didn’t wait to exchange pleasantries either.
Gage towered over me. My fingers ached to reach out and trace the defined muscles under his shirt and his solid arms that were begging for my attention.
I broke eye contact and walked into the living room. A football flew across the room, over the heads of nearly fifty people and landed in the arms of Maverick Campbell.
Could this night get any worse?
Unlike Gage and Storm, I had known Maverick Campbell a long time ago.
He was too busy with a group of women to notice someone from his past. Maverick wasn’t just the captain slash quarterback. He was the Alpha of the Pack. Well, he would become the Alpha when his Uncle steps down soon.
I looked around for a place to sit and possibly disappear. I felt like a fish out of water.
Where was my Mom anyway?
“If you’re going to stay take your ass to the kitchen and make yourself useful. That cake better not make anyone sick either,” Sienna hissed.
Despite my banishment to the kitchen, I was glad to escape.
As I walked to the kitchen, I noticed Sienna wrap her arms around her man, Gage. She rested her head on his chest while he placed his chin on her head and lazily wrapped an arm around her, placing a hand on her hip.
My wolf whimpered, and I pushed her far away before she made me say something that got us both killed!
“How much longer do we have to wait?” Maverick asked.
I paused.
“I don’t know. My old man should be here by now,” Storm replied.
“Who knows what that sluts making him do,” Sienna commented.
I bit my tongue. I wanted to yell at her for talking about my Mom that way, but I kept my cool. Once again, Gage and I locked eyes, and I had to break contact.
Where were they? I was drowning here!
The front door burst open, and the house filled with laughter. The music stopped when the couple arrived. My Mother and her boyfriend, Barnette, stumbled into the room in a loving embrace.
“Great, you’re all here!” Barnette beamed.
Mom rested her head on his chest.
“Just like you asked, old man, what’s this about?” Storm asked calmly.
“Tell them, Kitten,” Barnette said.
Mom beamed almost as bright as the sun. She raised her right hand to showcase a huge rock! “Barnette and I got married!”
My jaw dropped. “What?”
Sienna jumped to her feet. “Are you insane?”
“It’s sudden, but we couldn’t wait to be together. Arline and Odessa are moving in! Isn’t that great, Sienna? You’ve got a new sister.”
All eyes turned on me.
Oh crap.
Maverick POV“Another one,” I said, shoving the glass forward.“You need to stop drinking. We’ve got another game this weekend. Our season’s in jeopardy. The Daciana Devils could steal,” Gage said.“We can’t lose to them two years in a row. That’s disastrous. Before we know it, people will be campaigning for Ryder for Alpha,” Storm added.I turned to him and growled. He raised his hands in surrender. “Stranger things have happened.”“I can’t think about football right now. I hate my fucking bed. Everywhere I turn, I feel like I’m going to see her, but I don’t. It’s like she’s haunting me.”“Come on, it’s like you don’t know where she is. You’re having her followed,” Gage said.I growled. “I don’t want the whole pack to know!”The guys chuckled. They didn’t know how hard it was to fall asleep last night in an empty bed. I woke up before the sun and ran around the pack.I ran into a few locals, and they told me how safe it made them feel knowing the Alpha was around, personally patrolli
Odessa POV“You can’t get rid of Rune,” I murmured.“I can.”“I don’t want you to have that image. Just let me do this.”“Do you want us to be ripped apart? Is that what you want, Odessa?”“I didn’t say that.”“Is being Luna too much for you?” He yelled, throwing his arms in the air.“It sounds like you don’t think I can do this. Maybe I am just a worthless omega to you.”“What the fuck?”“You always treat me like I’ll break at any turn.”“I can’t do with you right now!”The door to his office flew open. Storm and Gage strolled inside.“You two can’t be arguing right now. You need to leave immediately,” Storm said.“This is exactly what that little rat wants. Think about it,” Gage added.Too late. My eyes were watering, my limbs trembled, and my stomach was in knots.“You guys are right,” Maverick sighed. “Mate, let’s go home.”“You heard what the council said. We can’t be together right now.”“That’s not going to stop me from holding you tonight.”I released a shaky breath. I followe
Odessa POVI grabbed my forehead and battled the urge to faint. My vision blurred, and my hearing failed me.“I reject this challenge!” Maverick roared.“You can’t do that, Alpha Maverick,” Sofia protested.“What the hell are you talking about? I’m not going to allow this.”I reached out for support. Evyn grabbed me to steady me.“Relax, Odessa. I can’t believe her.”I couldn’t believe all these people didn’t want me to be Luna.“Normally, but this has the makings of an uprising. There are too many pack members involved now. It’s become a legitimate challenge,” Sofia added.Maverick’s gaze found mine. The fury in his eyes matched the intensity of the mate bond.“This doesn’t make any sense,” Darius commented.“Of course, it makes perfect sense,” Rune’s mother, Pearl, said. She’d been quiet for the entire ceremony.“Rune recognises the omega is an ill fit to be Luna. She’s a murderer,” Pearl scorned.“It was in self-defence and everyone knows it! Trevor kidnapped me,” I burst out.“Run
Maverick POVI was knuckles deep inside my mate. Her juices were all over my hand, branding me as hers.I swear whatever’s making that sound will lose every limb it has. I don’t care what it is!I tried not to growl or look annoyed. I didn’t want her to worry. The whole point of tonight was to get her mind off things“Wait here, Wildcat. I’ll check it out.”She sat up.“I’ll be right back, Odessa.”“But—”“I love having my trusty omega by my side, but I think I can handle a squirrel.”“Are you sure? You’re so scared of heights that the squirrel might use that to its advantage and come at you from the sky.”“Very funny, Odessa.” I hurled a pillow at her.I darted out of the bedroom, knowing I had ten seconds before she got dressed and followed me.The second I got downstairs, I caught a blend of wolf scents.“Damn it.”I walked out of the front door. The scent was stronger.“A group of she-wolves,” I murmured. It was a Thursday night, there’s no reason for them to be roaming around her
Odessa POV“Wildcat!” Maverick called.Ever since Sienna was hurt, I developed an unusual fascination with stars. I found myself climbing onto the roof. It was the closest I could get to the diamonds in the sky.“Are you up there again?” Maverick crumbled.“You’re not scared of falling off, are you, Alpha?” I replied.“You need a new hobby.”Maverick climbed out of the guest bedroom window and climbed onto the roof. I could hear his heart hammering in his chest.“What’s wrong with grass, Odessa?”“I like it up here.”I turned to look at him. He took my hand and brought it to his lips. The pack’s been quiet for the past few days. No one knew there were witches being held hostage in the pack.“Sienna’s going to be fine, you know that, right?”“She won’t be the same, Maverick. Her wolf won’t be either.”He pulled me closer. I rested my head on his shoulder and wrapped my arm around his waist.“Let’s talk about something else. Like how much of a jackass I am,” Maverick said.“What did you
Odessa POV“It’s not looking good, sweetheart,” Mom said as soon as she spotted me.“Have you heard anything?” Maverick asked.“Barnette’s in a coma and they don’t know when he’s going to wake up! This is a disaster.”“What?” I didn’t know his injuries were that bad.Mom clutched her chest. “I told him coming back here wasn’t a good idea. He wouldn’t listen. Now look where we are.”Maverick rubbed my back. “I’ll be right back.”I nodded. Mom pulled me aside. No doubt it was meant to share a little bit of gossip.“Is Barnette’s ex-wife around?” She hissed.“She’s in jail.”“Good. She’s an even bigger bitch than Barnette made her out to be. Who does that to their own daughter?”I rubbed my forehead and groaned.“Fine, I didn’t tell you who your father was until you were an adult, but I didn’t try to kill you.”“You didn’t tell me my potential father was in this town the whole time too.”“Pipe down! I told you Brandon was a married man. His wife threatened me once I didn’t want her to re
