“I can’t believe I’m here,” I sighed, smoothing my red hand-me-down dress.
I held the chocolate cake in my free hand. I made it earlier before I was invited to my Mother’s boyfriend’s house for a party.
I did not want to attend because Barnette’s children weren’t fond of me. They were high-class and sophisticated while I lived in a one-bedroom rat hole for my life. However, I couldn’t disappoint my Mother. She was convinced he was the love of her life.
“Here we go.”
I rang the doorbell at Barnette’s million-dollar mansion. I’d been to Barnette’s house three times, and each time was a different scenario. I just hoped I made it out of there alive. Barnette’s son, Storm, was the running back on the football team and part of a deadly trio of players, best friends with the quarterback and Alpha Heir, Maverick.
The front door finally opened, and I plastered on a smile. Loud music and laughter streamed out of the house. Anxiety clawed at me. I could imagine all the important people at this party.
Sienna scowled at me. “You. What the hell do you want? Charity?”
“Sienna… nice to see you—”
“Save it. No one invited the omega reject. This party is for elites only, not the girl who cleans the stadium grass.”
Her words sliced my heart even though I’d heard them before. Sienna was the captain of the cheerleading team for the Darciana Wildcats and the Pack’s golden girl.
I swallowed the lump in my throat. “M-my Mom told me to come over.”
“That slut of a Mother? This isn’t her house.” Sienna screamed in my face.
I balled my hands into fists and pulled the cake to my chest. Sienna would never like me. To her, I was encroaching on her sacred relationship with her Father, even though I tried to avoid her family like the plague.
“Look, I didn’t want to—”
“Who’s at the door, babe?”
A hand appeared on Sienna’s shoulder before a six-foot-one man appeared in the doorframe.
My tongue swelled, and my palms sweated. My pupils dilated, and every hair on my skin stood. It was Gage Ravens, the second member of the Wildcats Fab Three. How did I forget he was dating his best friend Storm’s twin sister? It was all anyone could talk about for a month!
The tabloids thought it would ruin their connection on the field, but it didn’t. Storm and Gage have known each other since they were in diapers, the same as Maverick. Their chemistry on the field was something that had been refined over the years to create the perfect deadly blow.
I looked away. I hoped they wouldn’t notice my laboured breathing. I stepped back as the air thickened with his scent.
“Who’s this?” Gage nodded at me.
I’d only seen him and his teammates at a distance, but up close, he was intimidating and more... However, when our eyes met, I couldn’t deny the fireworks. I was drawn to him like a sailor enchanted by a siren’s death song. I knew he’d lead me to disaster, but I wanted to fall into him anyway.
I had a problem.
“No one,” Sienna snapped. “If you’re waiting for your Mother, you’ll have to wait outside. No one wants the stench of dead rats in the house.”
“Sienna,” Storm scolded. “Let her in.”
“She doesn’t belong here, Storm. We’ve been over this,” Sienna placed a hand on her waist, rolling her eyes at her twin.
“Dad wants her here. Let her in,” Storm said firmly.
Storm leaned against the wall behind the couple. Unlike his twin sister, Storm had vibrant blue eyes that could compete with the enchantment of the sky.
“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t important to my Mother.”
Sienna scowled, “Whatever.” She marched off, and her brother didn’t wait to exchange pleasantries either.
Gage towered over me. My fingers ached to reach out and trace the defined muscles under his shirt and his solid arms that were begging for my attention.
I broke eye contact and walked into the living room. A football flew across the room, over the heads of nearly fifty people and landed in the arms of Maverick Campbell.
Could this night get any worse?
Unlike Gage and Storm, I had known Maverick Campbell a long time ago.
He was too busy with a group of women to notice someone from his past. Maverick wasn’t just the captain slash quarterback. He was the Alpha of the Pack. Well, he would become the Alpha when his Uncle steps down soon.
I looked around for a place to sit and possibly disappear. I felt like a fish out of water.
Where was my Mom anyway?
“If you’re going to stay take your ass to the kitchen and make yourself useful. That cake better not make anyone sick either,” Sienna hissed.
Despite my banishment to the kitchen, I was glad to escape.
As I walked to the kitchen, I noticed Sienna wrap her arms around her man, Gage. She rested her head on his chest while he placed his chin on her head and lazily wrapped an arm around her, placing a hand on her hip.
My wolf whimpered, and I pushed her far away before she made me say something that got us both killed!
“How much longer do we have to wait?” Maverick asked.
I paused.
“I don’t know. My old man should be here by now,” Storm replied.
“Who knows what that sluts making him do,” Sienna commented.
I bit my tongue. I wanted to yell at her for talking about my Mom that way, but I kept my cool. Once again, Gage and I locked eyes, and I had to break contact.
Where were they? I was drowning here!
The front door burst open, and the house filled with laughter. The music stopped when the couple arrived. My Mother and her boyfriend, Barnette, stumbled into the room in a loving embrace.
“Great, you’re all here!” Barnette beamed.
Mom rested her head on his chest.
“Just like you asked, old man, what’s this about?” Storm asked calmly.
“Tell them, Kitten,” Barnette said.
Mom beamed almost as bright as the sun. She raised her right hand to showcase a huge rock! “Barnette and I got married!”
My jaw dropped. “What?”
Sienna jumped to her feet. “Are you insane?”
“It’s sudden, but we couldn’t wait to be together. Arline and Odessa are moving in! Isn’t that great, Sienna? You’ve got a new sister.”
All eyes turned on me.
Oh crap.
Odessa POV“How did you find me there? It’s in the middle of nowhere?” I asked Ximena.I watched as she shut the windows and curtains of the motel room she took me to.“Well, I’ve been following you. I saw you get taken from your job. I lost you on your way to the black sight. I followed the guards back to the pack house, and that’s where I heard the coordinates and the Alpha’s orders. So you’ve got a boyfriend they don’t want you reuniting with.”She crossed her arms and grinned.I nodded. “He’s the Alpha heir. It’s a long story.”“That’s okay, we have so much time to talk!”She wrapped her arms around me and squeezed. This was more than weird. I just watched this woman kill four guards and kick like a professional fighter. I was still sceptical about us being related, but she came all this way to find me and saved my ass from the council and Alpha Seth. She deserved every ounce of my respect.“You look just like my mother! She was a looker. I sent so many letters.”“I only got one.
Maverick POV“Are you sure it’s okay to talk?” Ryder asked.I can’t believe I was at his house. If word about this spread in the pack, they’d all call me a traitor. Football got pretty heated around her.“Yeah, your mom won’t be back until later. Now listen to me,” Brandon said, clapping his hands in front of himself.“I didn’t believe she could be from the Nassgar line until I saw her power manifest. The Nassgar pack is a pack of wanderers, but they always remain in the North. I left a long time ago. I wanted more than the little pack could offer,” Brandon explained.“Money, you wanted money, Dad,” Ryder said.Brandon shrugged. “Money’s good.”“So is everyone from this pack special?” I asked.“Not at all. Only those born in the royal bloodline. Well, that’s how it used to be. I’m not special, and neither is my sister, Ximena.”“That’s the woman sending Odessa letters,” I said.Damn, I was having a hard time digesting all this. Her beautiful, unearthly eyes and fiery red hair flashed
Odessa POVThey had me down here for hours. No food, no water and sometimes Trevor would turn off the lights to frighten me. Naturally, wolves had better eyesight than humans, but just knowing I was in the dark all alone scared the shit out of me.“Does my deadly venom melt metal, too?” I asked Meadow.“Nope.”“Did you know about it?”“You needed to find out on your own. There’s only so much the moon goddess allows me to tell you.”“You didn’t tell me anything!”Meadow whimpered, but it was true.“Is Maverick okay?” I asked, lying on the floor, cold and defeated.“No, he’s not. Mates shouldn’t be separated like that.”“I still can’t speak to him, though,” I said.“Yup.”I groaned and rolled myself to a sitting position. I leaned against the wall. The lights above my head came on.The footsteps were heavy and harsh. There was nowhere to hide and scurry off to.“Little omega,” Alpha Seth spat, his lips curled at the corners.“Let me go,” I said firmly.“I will,” he replied.“At what cos
Maverick POVI shifted out of my wolf skin as soon as I set foot on the pack house soil. The private dungeons were under the house. We had to take a tunnel to get to them. They were reserved for the worst criminals and deadliest secrets.Of course, they would bring her here. The council sent men to hold me up. Four against one in the dining hall. While they snatched my mate! Storm was locked in the showers! The football team had to fight off the beta army to get Storm out.Once I fought off the four betas, it was too late. Odessa was gone. When it rained, it poured. Now I couldn’t feel her wolf.“Alpha Maverick,” the omegas said, bowing as I burst into the house.“WHERE IS SHE?” I roared as I veered into the living room,“Maverick, calm down, I just put your brother down for a nap,” my mother said.“I don’t give a fuck!” I yelled.“Maverick, that’s enough!” Seth yelled.I took in the four council members in the living room. They were plotting against me! I closed the distance between
Odessa POV“We should have known it was impossible for an omega to be fated to an Alpha. It was all a ruse,” Higgins uttered with disdain.“Get this thing off of me!” I cried. After I was forced into the back of a black, tinted SUV, Trevor bound my wrists with zip-ties and threw a black plastic bag over my head that reeked of fish!Higgins yanked the plastic bag off my head before shoving me into a cold, damp box-like room with metal bars for a door.“I haven’t done anything to Maverick. This isn’t fair! What happened to innocent until proven guilty?”Higgins frowned. “You are guilty.”“No, I’m not! You and your council don’t even know half the number of times Maverick was hurt.”“Is there something you would like to tell us, then?”I blinked a few times and bit the inside of my cheek.“For all we know, you could have orchestrated this.”I banged my hands on the metal bars. “You can’t do this.”“We’re the pack council. We have to protect the Alpha heir.”“No, you’re hypocrites. Whose s
Odessa POV I was on a mission to find Sienna at work the next day after I met Ryder at the bar. Things could easily go sideways when I confronted her about the silverleaf, but I had to try before involving Storm.I found her in the gym, in her petite gold and white practice cheerleader uniform.“There you are,” I breathed out.Luckily, the gym was empty.“What do you want?” She asked.“We have to talk. Don’t take this the wrong way,” I said.Sienna frowned. “I already am.”I shut my eyes and exhaled. “It’s about the silverleaf. Ryder told me.”She crossed her arms. “I take silverleaf and bloodroot every morning. So what? It’s to help my wolf not get sick.”“That’s not true. Those two plants don’t heal or protect. If you wanted to keep your wolf from getting sick, you should have been taking rosemary and elderberry. Sienna, you have no idea what you’ve done.”I yanked on my ponytail and paced to the treadmill. “Look, it’s none of your business, so butt out! Got it?” She snapped.“Ho
