I’m working so hard not to swoon. Damn, nobody told me how gorgeous that man is. He looks almost otherworldly with the auburn hair which seemed to have its own personal wind machine blowing it artfully hither and thither, his glittering green eyes seeming to burn with an inner light, his tanned flawless skin…fae ass looking motherfucker.

He would tower over Roman with his six three sturdy frame, his broad shoulders and those veiny guns on display with the t-shirt he was wearing. I’ve never seen such a casually dressed boss – a grey t-shirt and blue jeans, brown men’s work boots on his feet.

My husband-to-be is an interesting specimen. I have to say that the prospect of marrying him doesn’t feel like such a huge sacrifice.

Now, to break the news to my brother. He is going to throw such a fit.

I sigh long and hard just thinking about it.

“What’s this I hear about you leaving the safe house?” Roman marched into my apartment, a frown furrowing his brow. I could see the clouds of negativity wafting around him.

Taking a deep breath, I closed the door and followed him to my living room, where I walked straight to the bar and poured him a stiff drink. How to tell him?

That was the question.

“I have some good news.” I said as I handed him the glass.

He cocked an eyebrow at me. “I’m listening.”

“Sean McNally is no longer looking for me.”

“And how do you know that?”

I breathed in deep and then raised my eyes to meet his. “Because I went to see him.”

Roman downed his liquor and slammed the glass on the table. “Beg pardon?” his voice was low, breathy and dangerous. My heart fluttered a bit in my chest. I wasn’t scared of my brother but I had a healthy respect for his temper and his anger. It took a while for his control to snap but when it did, whoa…you better find shelter.

“I went to see Sean McNally, to…negotiate…the terms of our marriage.”

Roman’s eyes narrowed. He cocked his ear at me. “Say again.”

My hand was trembling too much to hold onto my glass. I slowly lowered it onto the table. “Roman, we need this. I know we do. But you were just going to continue to be stubborn. And I get it. You didn’t want to bargain with my future so I took the choice out of your hands. I’m Bratva too, Roman. I know my duty. So I did it.”

He flexed his jaw really hard, his eyes, so similar to mine and yet even more striking with his jet black hair,  shooting sparks of anger at me.

I fluttered my eyes, looking away from  him and clasped my hands in my lap so they didn’t shake too much. “So, McNally and I agreed to a union and in return, the war stops. You stop sabotaging his business and he stops encroaching on yours.”

Roman blinked at me. The silence expanded like a balloon, just growing and growing, until it sucked all the oxygen from the air. I didn’t dare say another word. I could feel my chest get tighter and tighter as I waited for the Pakhan’s verdict.

“That was…clever of you but I have one addendum.”

I straightened up, my heart leaping with happiness. “Okay, what?”

“The marriage is to last for one year, along with the truce. But if he mistreats you, deal is off. If you want to walk away after the year is up, he will let you. I’ll still honor the truce then, if he does the same.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat. My brother was under no obligation to consider me at all in such negotiations but unlike most gangsters, he tended to treat me like an autonomous person with agency. “Okay.” I said quietly.

He nodded, then reached out and squeezed my shoulder. “You did good, sestrichka. This war would have cost us a hell of a lot of money and put lives on the line. I don’t like losing my men.”

“Neither do I.”

“But I don’t like selling you either.”

“You’re not. I am.” I said gently. I smiled at my brother. “Let me do this for us.”

The day seems to stretch out interminably, just going on and on, the one time, I’d prefer it to end. Of course, there’s no law that says I can’t just grab Irina and bed her at any time. She is my wife after all, but she’s currently doing beauty things with a very sturdy looking woman with a stern face who gave me a very incredulous look when I dared to open the door to Irina’s room, in order to see what she was up to.I decide to leave the house and leave them to it. I have things to do. We have a chain of laundromats all over the city that serve to clean our money but I’m always looking for new avenues.I drive down to the port where one of my ships is scheduled to land this afternoon. All those people shopping on Ali Express have made my life a lot easier. Enables me to sail through Asia picking up cargo all nice and legal.I go into the office, exchanging banter with the officers at customs. As far as they know, all my cargo is legitimate so it’s perfectly reasonable for me to be h

Why did I make that deal?I’m not particularly bothered that Sean isn’t sleeping with me – it’s just that, I don’t know why he’s not and I like to keep my men predictable. If he married me, and doesn’t want to have sex with me…then what does he want? It’s a little terrifying to think about if I’m being honest. The leaders of Organized Crime – be it Italian or Irish, Russian or Black, are fucking psychos. You just never know what they might be thinking.Clearly Sean’s reticence doesn’t stem from lack of interest – he actually sounded worried when he was complaining about me going off without telling anyone. Almost as worried as Roman would sound if he knew. I’m not quite sure what to make of that. Now that Natasha doesn’t have to pretend to be a maid, she’s discarded the demure clothing and is back in combat gear, fully armed and assuming the military posture that was her wont before we came here. She definitely seems more relaxed in a weird kind of way, and so am I. I stand up, decidin

The swirl of emotions I was feeling as I followed Irina on her motorbike had me very confused. As I had watched her speeding away from me, going so fast I was almost hard put to keep up, all I could think was if she hit something at that speed there was no way she could survive. The cold grue that filled my chest at the thought could only be attributed to fear. But what possible reason did I have to fear for Irina? I barely knew her.“What the fuck?” I said to myself as the Boston city skyline came into sight. “First of all, where the hell was she going? And who told her she could go crazy on a motorbike? Honestly Sasha spoiled her.”Great, now I was talking to myself. I don’t even know why I followed Irina this morning. She left so early, I was curious about where she was going on the morning after her wedding day. Seeing her have breakfast with Sasha wasn’t exactly a shock. She was probably giving her first report. Not that there was anything much she could tell him. Their conversat

“I think he’s scared of me.” I picked up my coffee cup and took a large sip, looking around the busy café.Roman snorted. “So maybe he isn’t as foolish as I thought he was.” He leaned back on his chair, studying me closely. He’d called early in the morning, asking to meet me. I knew he was worried about how Sean might choose to treat me. My big brother Roman, always the worry wort.I cocked an eyebrow at him but didn’t say anything else. He was kind of right.“So now what?” he asked, his big hand dwarfing the expresso cup he was holding.I shrugged. “Well, the peace is holding so…”“You ready to live like this for a whole year?” he gave me an incredulous look.“Eh,” I shrugged again, “It’s not so bad. It’s not as if he’s beating me.”Clouds gathered on Roman’s face. “If he tried that I’d kill him myself.”I gave him a smug half smile. “I expect he knows that.”He reached out and took my hand in his. “Distrustful husband aside, you good?”I laughed. “It’s only been one day. I stared at the girl splayed on my bed, her long curvy body calling to me like a siren. I didn’t think my dick had ever been this hard; literally standing straight and straining against the soft wool of my towel like it was a prison. I don’t think I’ve ever really known the definition of blue balls. I’ve never really known the pain of frustration. Not like this.Irina was lying in front of me like an invitation but something stopped me from jumping her bones like I wanted to. Something like a sense of self preservation. Maybe the same caution that had kept me alive all these years. Why is she really here?We were always going to end up here – with her in my bed. But this felt too easy. So I didn’t trust it. I didn’t put it past her and her brother to have concocted some scheme which involved using her as a honey pot. Everything I knew about Roman Dobrev spoke against him ever using his sister in that way; but what if it was her idea? One thing I did know about these Russians, they wou

  • The Queen's Gambit   Irina/Sean

I wasn’t expecting a honeymoon or anything like that, but I also hadn’t expected to spend my first night in Sean’s house all alone. The man dropped me off after the wedding reception held at one of my brother’s hotels, and said he had some work to do. Then he took off. Left me holding my wedding dress and surrounded by my luggage. My maid, Natasha, put away my things before going off to find her own quarters. Sean had told me that there was a cook on call should I want something to eat but otherwise, Natasha and I were on our own.I changed out of my wedding dress, taking great pleasure in clearing my face of make up before having a long hot shower and then lounging around in my pajamas and robe. I found a steamy romance to read on the shelf in the library, made myself some tea and a cheese sandwich and settled down to spend a peaceful evening.Natasha came in to join me, sitting across from me in the library with a sigh. “Well I have looked around. Not much. I don’t think he spends m
