I watch as her gaze softens when I speak. I don’t want to scare her. I wish with every fiber of my being I could comfort her right now. Console her, and tell her there wasn’t some maniac who was looking to murder her family and take their crown. But the reality is that there is. And that maniac is her first mate. The reality of the situation hits her harder, in a way I don’t think anyone really sees but me.

“where are you going?” she asks as she walks up closer to me.

“Nowhere at the moment. Quai and I will be getting everyone set up who is in the battalions that are leaving, but then we are also going to be in meetings most of the night with the remainder of the warriors. I’ve spent weeks coming up with a new defensive for our pack, and I need to get everyone on the same page to initiate it.”
