Chapter 1

"Mom, Dad, this is my friend, Fiona. Her staff dorm is being renovated, so she's gonna stay with us for a few days."

My sister, Judy Floyd's, voice crashed over the room like thunder.

I looked up.

Judy was bouncing with excitement as she introduced her friend, Fiona Shepard, to my parents. Fiona was a young woman with a cool, slightly embarrassed face.

"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd. I'm Fiona. Thank you so much for having me. I honestly didn't know where I'd go."

Right then, I realized I'd been given a second chance. I'd been sent back to the day Fiona moved into my parents' house.

I still hadn't had time to change out of my uniform, and Fiona kept glancing at me.

"Judy, who's this?"

Judy ran over and hugged my neck, her voice bright. "This is my brother. He's cute, right?"

Fiona finally looked me over properly, a little shy. "Yeah, he's handsome. You're pretty, too. Your parents have really good genes."

My parents and Judy burst out laughing at that.

Just like before, Fiona knew exactly how to charm people. In her first week in our house, everyone was saying what a thoughtful, sweet girl she was.

Judy even pushed past my wife, Lara Floyd's, objections and urged Fiona to work for us as a nanny.

Seeing Fiona again now made my skin crawl. In my last life, she had destroyed my family. This time, I vowed to make her pay.

Judy led Fiona into her room. Not long after, Fiona came out wearing an apron and went into the kitchen.

"No, you're our guest. We can't let you cook for us," my parents protested.

"I didn't graduate from college, and I do housekeeping work. I can't afford rent, but I can at least cook," Fiona said. "Please, just sit and try some of my cooking."

She quickly won the elderly couple over and dove into making dinner.

"Judy, you should treat Fiona well. Look at her—she might not be well-off, but she's got pride and carries herself with dignity. She's a good kid," my father said.

He was a regular retired civil servant, and he admired Fiona's attitude.

But I started asking questions.

"Judy, how did you meet Fiona? You're a lawyer, and she's not the kind of person you'll come across usually."

"Oh, FIona's old boss accused her of stealing, so her company hired me as her defense lawyer. That's how I met her. She's really great. She even brings me food at the firm."

In my last life, I never understood how Judy and Fiona became so close.

Was Fiona's friendship planned from the start?

At dinner, Fiona kept the mood light with jokes here and there.

"Nelson, I saw your wedding ring. Where's your wife?" she asked casually.

I swallowed the food in my mouth. "She's pregnant. I told her to stay home and rest."

Judy suddenly set her utensils down. "Nelson, why don't you hire Fiona as your nanny? Lara's really sick from the pregnancy, and Peter needs looking after. We know Fiona—she's reliable. Wouldn't she be perfect for your house?"

My parents agreed right away.

I was about to refuse, but then I thought, if I pushed Fiona away, who knew what kind of foul trick a schemer like her might pull? It was better to keep her where I could see her.

"You're right. It actually sounds like a good fit."

Fiona looked thrilled. "Really? You'll hire me? That's amazing. I promise I'll do my best!"

But before the DNA match even came through, a doctor from the hospital rushed up on stage. She looked flustered and whispered something to the reporter."HIV?" the reporter repeated, microphone still live for everyone to hear."What? Who's got HIV?" people called out."Speak up. Don't act all mysterious.""This is live. If there's new info, you have to tell us."The reporter steadied the mic and finally said, voice strained, "The doctor from the women's hospital just told me that… Fiona's test results show she's infected with HIV."Before anyone could fully react, the forensics officers sprinted onto the stage."We've uploaded the baby's DNA into the system, and we found a match. The baby's biological father is a person already on record for sex-related offenses. The specific name will not be disclosed at this time."The press conference had turned into a roller coaster of shocks and reversals.Everyone in the audience went through a whole range of expressions. That was when

"Everyone, quiet down. We'll announce the paternity test results now," the notary on stage spoke, and the room fell silent."Ahem. After joint testing by Riverton Diagnostics Center, the Grandview Medical University Testing Center, and the Capital City Police Forensics Division, I announce that the baby born to Fiona has no biological relationship with Officer Floyd."The room was in an uproar.Fiona and Don looked shocked and confused."What do you mean by that?" Fiona demanded.A reporter beside them snapped back, blunt and bored. "It means this kid isn't Officer Floyd's."Fiona's face went white. She flung the infant she'd been holding to the side. She jumped to her feet and shouted, "This test is garbage! This child is Nelson's! Did you take money from him? You're all bribed!"Before the notary could answer, the audience was already talking back."Is this woman serious? Kindhearted netizens pooled money to get Fiona into a high-end private maternity hospital in the city.On the day she gave birth, the hospital entrance was swarmed, with rows of reporters and influencers pointing their cameras at the door.Fiona walked out of the delivery room looking pale and worn out. Her eyes were red, but her tone was firm. "Thank you all for your support. We've finally made it to this day. I believe in justice, and I believe you all will be the judge. I will make sure to rid the scum in the law enforcement!"The crowd erupted in cheers, fueling her performance. But what Fiona didn't know was that her fame was half my doing. To keep the hype alive, I'd paid good money to boost her videos, and even contacted legal channels and major media outlets, posing as a concerned citizen, so they'd track the case. Without that, this hospital wouldn't be crawling with so many cameras today.A reporter called out, "Mrs. Shepard, the police are here, too. Do you plan to fi

I stayed behind my coworkers, so Fiona didn't notice me at first."Officers, help! They're trying to kill me!" she cried.Don jumped in right after, bawling like a kid. "My wife's an orphan, and she's uneducated. She went to the city to work, but people took advantage of her. Now they're saying we owe loan sharks!"I stepped out from between two of my colleagues and looked straight at Fiona."Fiona? Didn't you tell me your mom got hit by a car and you had to go home to take care of her?"Hearing my voice, Fiona immediately looked up. Her face twisted into a messy mix of embarrassment, panic, and a weird kind of excitement. One of my coworkers elbowed me. "You know her?""Sort of," I said casually. "She's my nanny. But we're not close. Before she left, she told me her mom was in an accident and even asked to borrow 20 grand from me. Guess she ended up borrowing from loan sharks."That was when Don finally connected the dots. His eyes widened, and then he jabbed his finger right
