Chapter 2

작가: Nameless
Against the polished wealth of Grayson Manor, I looked like someone from an entirely different social class.

Maybe some part of the original Micah still resented having everything that should have been his taken away and wondered why his own family could not love him.

A sudden, inexplicable sadness rose inside my chest.

I forced it down, ignored Tristan's triumphant little smile, and shook my head.

"I'm not planning to compete with Tristan for anything.

"If you don't believe me, I can leave right now. Just give me the address of the wellness residence, please."

The mood in the room curdled as they searched my face for signs that I was performing or secretly furious.

They were going to be disappointed.

I simply lowered my head and waited silently for them to finish venting so I could leave.

Because I genuinely loved their arrangement.

Apparently my total compliance made me as dull as a corpse.

Before long, I was sitting in the family's cheapest car on my way to Sagewater Wellness Residence, a quiet private campus outside Cedarhaven, Marroway.

Just before the door closed, Ivy Sinclair, the fiancee who had barely spoken all evening, blocked it and warned me with a frown.

"Micah, don't think acting innocent will make me forget what you did to Tristan. Give up. I will never marry you. Tristan is the only person I love."

I stared at her in confusion, nudged her hand away, and shut the door.

The engagement belonged to the original Micah, not me.

Why would I care?

Still, good manners were free, so I rolled down the window and added something helpful.

"Don't worry. I don't like you, and I won't bother you."

Ignoring Ivy's stunned and suspicious stare, I rolled the window back up without hesitation.

Three hours earlier, I had been scraping by at the bottom of society in another world.

I had lived in a cramped, windowless room in a neglected neighborhood and worked constantly just to eat.

Compared with that, being housed for free at a landscaped private wellness retreat felt luxurious.

Back in my original world, I had no relatives and no real friends.

I had only myself, struggling alone in a glittering city that never noticed whether I lived or died.

I worked myself to death, then opened my eyes to people offering me ten thousand dollars a month plus room and board.

To me, it felt like the universe had handed me a second life.

I wanted to survive in this world.

With that thought, I tried calling out to the System inside my mind and asked it to explain the original Micah's situation.

The System went quiet for a moment before answering,

"This is one of those stories where the whole cast adores the adopted heir. Your role is to help the despised biological heir reverse his fate. Several previous challengers failed, so the mission was eventually abandoned."

It sent the host's memories with the explanation, and only then did I understand what kind of life Micah had endured.

The original Micah was the Grayson family's biological son, switched with another newborn shortly after birth.

After eighteen years of surviving alone and struggling for every meal, he finally discovered his biological parents by accident.

But some things could not be repaired simply because the truth had been found.

Micah's poverty clung to him, visible in every nervous habit and every reflexive apology.

Tristan, meanwhile, had grown up inside Grayson Manor, surrounded by affection that technically belonged to someone else.

He never needed to beg for one approving look. Attention and love came to him naturally.

The biological son became the only outsider in his own family.

Worse, Tristan protected his position by repeatedly accusing Micah of hurting him.

Once everyone decided Micah was cruel and selfish, they treated him worse than the family dog.

"You could still try to win them over and become the favorite instead."

I swallowed the strange ache of recognizing too much in Micah's loneliness and rejected the suggestion.

"No. If everyone before me failed to change how much they hate him, why would I waste my life trying?

"If nobody loves me, then nobody loves me. I just want to stay alive."

The System did not argue. The mission was already abandoned, so it had no reason to force me to complete it.

After settling into my room, I began sorting through what my new life actually looked like.

Afterward, the core self fell silent and my own awareness became confused. That was when the System attached itself to us and cycled through several outside challengers who tried to reverse Micah's fate.Every one of them failed. After countless resets, I finally woke fully and assumed I must be another challenger. But I had been wrong. The core self and I had always belonged to the same Micah Bell, the boy who could never earn love from the people who called themselves his family. Those painful memories belonged to both of us.Fate had an ugly sense of humor.I wanted to laugh, but there was no air left for it.Through the blur, I saw a dark figure cutting through the water toward me and pulling me back toward shore.A stranger's voice reached me, firm but gentle."Stay with me. There's more life waiting for you. Keep breathing."Only then did I remember that while Ivy was driving me to the coast, I had quietly contacted 911 and shared what I knew.I had gambled on help ar

"No. That video is fake. Ivy, you believe me, don't you? Tell them I would never do this.""Of course. Tristan is kind. He couldn't possibly..."Vanessa gave a bitter laugh and cut Ivy off."Do you still think Tristan saved your life? The day you collapsed during a medical emergency, Micah carried you for blocks and begged strangers to help until paramedics arrived."And you just pushed the person who saved you toward armed criminals."Every word Ivy had prepared died in her throat. Panic and disbelief covered her face."No. That can't be true."Vanessa slapped her in fury. "The records and witnesses are there. Check them yourself."The beach dissolved into chaos.I barely noticed. Two forces seemed to be tearing at my mind from opposite directions, and the pain was unbearable. The captors hesitated, suddenly unsure what to do.When Denny saw how close I looked to collapsing, he shouted toward Tristan."Mr. Tristan, is this guy okay? We took fifty thousand dollars to stage

Richard agreed immediately. "Trade places with Tristan, and we'll treat all of this as if it never happened."The biological parents who had recently promised to compensate me were now asking me to walk willingly into armed captivity.Feeling what the original Micah must have felt every time these people chose someone else over him was almost absurd."We'll trade. Right now. Tristan, don't be afraid. You'll be safe in a minute."Ivy shoved the ransom case into my hands and pushed me toward the men with knives. She pushed so hard that I stumbled and fell onto the beach, cutting my forehead on broken shell fragments until blood ran near my eye.No one checked on me. They only urged me forward."Go get Tristan back. Stop dragging this out."The System couldn't stand watching anymore."Host, forget them. Take the money and run.""It wouldn't work. I'm alone, and these people have enough influence to find me."They always had another excuse to tear apart whatever peace I built.

I finally studied the young woman standing in front of me.After Micah's identity was confirmed, Richard had arranged an engagement between him and Ivy Sinclair as part of what he called compensation. At first, the two of them had gotten along reasonably well. Ivy had shown interest in Micah, and Micah gradually came to care about her and treated her well.Whenever she asked for something, the original Micah tried to find a way to give it to her.Somewhere along the way, however, Ivy's attention began following Tristan everywhere until she became one more devoted member of the crowd protecting him.For Micah, she had only impatience and contempt. In Ivy's mind, every time Tristan suffered, Micah's jealousy had to be responsible.More than once, she had played with Micah's feelings simply to amuse Tristan and mocked him, calling him her lovesick lapdog.Remembering that, I forced down my disgust and clarified the situation again."Ms. Sinclair, I genuinely have no feelings for

Before Micah could explain, Vanessa arrived holding Tristan's hand while he stood beside her with red-rimmed eyes from crying. She soothed the beautifully dressed Tristan in a low voice."Don't cry. You're the only little brother I have."Then she pulled a bank card from her wallet and threw it at Micah's face."There's ten thousand dollars on it. Is that enough? You just got here and you're already trying to squeeze money out of us. Disgusting."Micah stared at his biological parents, who looked just as repulsed, then at the card on the floor. He had no idea what to do.His own sister's warning rang in his ears."Remember this. You will never replace Tristan in this family."From that day forward, everyone treated Micah as if he had reunited with the Graysons only to steal their money. In a mansion with dozens of rooms, they gave him a dark storage room barely larger than Tristan's bathroom. It was damp, poorly ventilated, and streaked with gray-green mold. After living the

"S-sorry."I acted as though I had no temper at all. My only goal was to get away, so I answered almost casually."It's fine. This is better than when you drove your heel into the back of my knee."Vanessa went silent, remembering exactly what she had done. For the first time, guilt and regret filled her eyes.I didn't want any of them showing up later to demand something from me, so I explained myself carefully."I'm not competing with anyone for anything. I promise I won't interfere in your lives. I only want to live my own."Then I ignored the Graysons standing behind me, shouldered my canvas bag, and limped toward the door. This time, no one stopped me. I climbed onto my battered scooter and left. How the birthday disaster ended was none of my concern. After that night, people throughout Cedarhaven talked about what Tristan had done.Plenty of them said the Graysons had been blind enough to let Tristan occupy Micah's place and then help push the biological son out.But T
