Chapter 3

작가: Nameless
Sagewater wasn't a conventional psychiatric hospital.

The Graysons seemed to think sending Micah here and ignoring him would humiliate him into repentance.

Because I had agreed to the placement voluntarily, no one supervised me beyond the ordinary rules of the residential campus.

They were waiting for me to break down, confess everything, and beg to be taken back to Grayson Manor.

They had no idea this place felt like paradise to me.

Over the next few days, I absorbed Micah's memories and occasionally chatted with the System.

"Host, why don't you work a little harder, make them adore you, drain the Grayson fortune, and take me somewhere fun?"

I rejected the System's brilliant plan immediately. "No."

I was not the original Micah. I did not carry all his longing, and I wanted no deeper connection to the Graysons.

If I wanted to stand on my own in this world, I needed to rely on myself.

I reluctantly used the ten thousand dollars I had brought from the estate to buy a secondhand laptop and began taking small programming contracts.

The rest of my time went to delivery work, shop shifts, and any other legal job I could find.

There was nothing shameful about earning money. I would have collected refundable bottles from trash bins if that paid.

While I buried myself in work from morning to night, the Graysons rented the entire Rookspire Estate for Tristan's eighteenth-birthday gala three days later.

Shortly afterward, the flower shop where I worked a part‑time shift sent me out to deliver a bouquet to the estate.

I parked my battered scooter well away from the luxury cars before entering the enormous manor.

From a distance, I saw Tristan dressed like a storybook prince while guests praised him from every direction.

Next to him, I looked like something the caterers had tracked in off the driveway.

I pressed one hand over the strange ache in my chest, forced down the envy and grief that had risen from nowhere, and shook my head.

Maybe the original Micah's lingering consciousness had seen all of this and felt hurt.

Today was Micah's eighteenth birthday too, yet his biological family had not offered him so much as a message.

They saw only Tristan. They loved only Tristan. For Micah, there had always been disgust and mockery.

How could the original Micah not resent that?

Once I had myself under control, I followed Gerald to the place where the bouquet was supposed to go.

It was strange. The estate was already filled with white roses, so why had anyone ordered one useless bouquet from a small neighborhood shop?

I was never going to understand rich people.

Across the room, Tristan glanced in my direction and gave the faintest smile.

I could not tell whether he had actually seen me.

I had no desire to meet any Grayson, so I kept my head down and stayed behind Gerald.

Not long after I left the room, a disturbance broke out among the guests.

Tristan had supposedly gone to change, yet he returned in the same clothes and suddenly began crying in front of everyone.

As people rushed to ask what was wrong, his tears only became worse.

"The watch Ivy gave me is gone, and the formal suit and shoes Vanessa prepared for me have been cut apart.

"I've always tried to get along with everyone. Other than Micah hating me, I don't have enemies here."

Tristan's friend Cole Harrington heard that and punched the wall in fury.

"Micah did it. He's jealous because the Graysons love you."

Tristan staggered back as if horrified by the accusation, his face full of wounded restraint.

"I know I took Micah's place, and I know he hates me. I've tried so hard to make peace, even though he destroys the gifts I give him, steals from me, hits me when Mom and Dad aren't watching, burns me with hot water, and spreads lies about me.

"But does he really hate me enough that he has to humiliate me in front of everyone?"

"Of course he does," Cole snapped, furious on Tristan's behalf. "You're too kind. That's why someone like Micah thinks he can walk all over you."

The guests joined in, condemning me as vicious and contemptible.

Vanessa heard the commotion, abandoned the people she had been entertaining, and rushed over. "What happened? Tristan, why are you crying?"

Afterward, the core self fell silent and my own awareness became confused. That was when the System attached itself to us and cycled through several outside challengers who tried to reverse Micah's fate.Every one of them failed. After countless resets, I finally woke fully and assumed I must be another challenger. But I had been wrong. The core self and I had always belonged to the same Micah Bell, the boy who could never earn love from the people who called themselves his family. Those painful memories belonged to both of us.Fate had an ugly sense of humor.I wanted to laugh, but there was no air left for it.Through the blur, I saw a dark figure cutting through the water toward me and pulling me back toward shore.A stranger's voice reached me, firm but gentle."Stay with me. There's more life waiting for you. Keep breathing."Only then did I remember that while Ivy was driving me to the coast, I had quietly contacted 911 and shared what I knew.I had gambled on help ar

"No. That video is fake. Ivy, you believe me, don't you? Tell them I would never do this.""Of course. Tristan is kind. He couldn't possibly..."Vanessa gave a bitter laugh and cut Ivy off."Do you still think Tristan saved your life? The day you collapsed during a medical emergency, Micah carried you for blocks and begged strangers to help until paramedics arrived."And you just pushed the person who saved you toward armed criminals."Every word Ivy had prepared died in her throat. Panic and disbelief covered her face."No. That can't be true."Vanessa slapped her in fury. "The records and witnesses are there. Check them yourself."The beach dissolved into chaos.I barely noticed. Two forces seemed to be tearing at my mind from opposite directions, and the pain was unbearable. The captors hesitated, suddenly unsure what to do.When Denny saw how close I looked to collapsing, he shouted toward Tristan."Mr. Tristan, is this guy okay? We took fifty thousand dollars to stage

Richard agreed immediately. "Trade places with Tristan, and we'll treat all of this as if it never happened."The biological parents who had recently promised to compensate me were now asking me to walk willingly into armed captivity.Feeling what the original Micah must have felt every time these people chose someone else over him was almost absurd."We'll trade. Right now. Tristan, don't be afraid. You'll be safe in a minute."Ivy shoved the ransom case into my hands and pushed me toward the men with knives. She pushed so hard that I stumbled and fell onto the beach, cutting my forehead on broken shell fragments until blood ran near my eye.No one checked on me. They only urged me forward."Go get Tristan back. Stop dragging this out."The System couldn't stand watching anymore."Host, forget them. Take the money and run.""It wouldn't work. I'm alone, and these people have enough influence to find me."They always had another excuse to tear apart whatever peace I built.

I finally studied the young woman standing in front of me.After Micah's identity was confirmed, Richard had arranged an engagement between him and Ivy Sinclair as part of what he called compensation. At first, the two of them had gotten along reasonably well. Ivy had shown interest in Micah, and Micah gradually came to care about her and treated her well.Whenever she asked for something, the original Micah tried to find a way to give it to her.Somewhere along the way, however, Ivy's attention began following Tristan everywhere until she became one more devoted member of the crowd protecting him.For Micah, she had only impatience and contempt. In Ivy's mind, every time Tristan suffered, Micah's jealousy had to be responsible.More than once, she had played with Micah's feelings simply to amuse Tristan and mocked him, calling him her lovesick lapdog.Remembering that, I forced down my disgust and clarified the situation again."Ms. Sinclair, I genuinely have no feelings for

Before Micah could explain, Vanessa arrived holding Tristan's hand while he stood beside her with red-rimmed eyes from crying. She soothed the beautifully dressed Tristan in a low voice."Don't cry. You're the only little brother I have."Then she pulled a bank card from her wallet and threw it at Micah's face."There's ten thousand dollars on it. Is that enough? You just got here and you're already trying to squeeze money out of us. Disgusting."Micah stared at his biological parents, who looked just as repulsed, then at the card on the floor. He had no idea what to do.His own sister's warning rang in his ears."Remember this. You will never replace Tristan in this family."From that day forward, everyone treated Micah as if he had reunited with the Graysons only to steal their money. In a mansion with dozens of rooms, they gave him a dark storage room barely larger than Tristan's bathroom. It was damp, poorly ventilated, and streaked with gray-green mold. After living the

"S-sorry."I acted as though I had no temper at all. My only goal was to get away, so I answered almost casually."It's fine. This is better than when you drove your heel into the back of my knee."Vanessa went silent, remembering exactly what she had done. For the first time, guilt and regret filled her eyes.I didn't want any of them showing up later to demand something from me, so I explained myself carefully."I'm not competing with anyone for anything. I promise I won't interfere in your lives. I only want to live my own."Then I ignored the Graysons standing behind me, shouldered my canvas bag, and limped toward the door. This time, no one stopped me. I climbed onto my battered scooter and left. How the birthday disaster ended was none of my concern. After that night, people throughout Cedarhaven talked about what Tristan had done.Plenty of them said the Graysons had been blind enough to let Tristan occupy Micah's place and then help push the biological son out.But T
