Chapter 1

Penulis: Nameless
“Mom, I didn’t do anything. Charlotte’s death had nothing to do with me!”

The security officers pinned down my arms and legs, leaving me unable to move.

My frail bones ached against the floor, and all I could do was force the words from my throat.

My biological mother stood across from me, looking at me as if I were her mortal enemy.

“Fiona, you little curse! You vile girl! I should never have brought you home. You belonged in that miserable town! This is all your fault. If it weren’t for you, how could my Char have died? You must have killed Char!”

Her eyes were bloodshot. She had clearly spent the entire night crying.

When Charlotte and I were born, the nanny switched us.

From then on, the nanny’s child became a wealthy heiress overnight, while I followed the nanny back to the countryside and grew up struggling to survive.

After Charlotte’s bizarre death, my mother insisted that I was the culprit, claiming I was jealous that Charlotte had enjoyed eighteen years of wealth and privilege in my place.

She reported me to the authorities.

To prove my innocence, I agreed to make my memories public.

Memory extraction was agonizing, as if someone were trying to scramble my brain with a knife.

I gripped the arms of the chair so tightly that my entire body trembled and blood seeped from my fingertips, yet I still forced myself to give my mother a twisted smile.

“Mom, I really didn’t do anything.”

People in the audience whispered:

“Isn’t memory extraction a form of torture, only used on death-row inmates? Can a young girl really endure it?”

“I heard the eldest Shaw heiress died, and the family suspects the country girl they recently brought home.”

“She agreed to have her memories shown to prove she was innocent. The poor thing!”

My mother was afraid public opinion would turn in my favor. She didn’t even have time to look at me before rushing to the edge of the stage and shouting,

“What’s there to pity about Fiona? She killed my daughter! My Char was such a wonderful girl.

“She always thought of Fiona whenever she had anything good and even wanted her father and me to give Fiona more attention. And this is how Fiona repays her?”

The camera on the large screen conveniently shifted away from me and focused on my father and brother as they walked onto the stage.

My father looked as if he had aged more than a decade overnight. His voice was filled with exhaustion.

“If I’d known the girl I was bringing home was an ungrateful snake, I never would have brought this murderer back just because Char pleaded for her.”

My brother furrowed his brows, his face filled with anger.

“If kindness only leads to death, I wish I had never taught Char to be kind.”

The three of them successfully swayed public opinion with their accusations. No one spoke up for me anymore, and the only thing left was a growing chorus of shouts:

“Make the criminal pay for what she’s done!”

The memory extraction was successful.

When she saw that the broadcast would begin with my memories from age five or six, my mother immediately said, “What does this have to do with Char’s death? Skip it. I don’t want to watch!”

The prosecutor said, “Forcing the system to skip memories could damage her brain.”

My mother didn’t hesitate for even a second. “Skip it, then. Char’s death is what matters.”

The prosecutor sighed as the memory timeline on the large screen began moving forward slowly.

The footage reached the first time I returned to the Shaw family estate.

Charlotte smiled and led me to the room she had personally decorated for me. When I stepped inside, I found the entire room drab and oppressive.

After everything that happened, everyone looked at me with pity. They kept pressing premium recovery drinks to my lips as if cost were no concern, and I finally came back to myself a little. The prosecutor spoke to me gently. "Under the law, now that the convicted parties have forfeited their inheritance rights, you are the remaining eligible heir to the Shaw family assets. How would you like to handle it?"I was still weak, so I said softly, "I don’t know how to run a business. Could they be liquidated and paid out to me in cash?"The prosecutor nodded. That meant there would be no Shaw Group left in this world. The empire my father spent decades building would be reduced to nothing but a sum of money. My father nearly lost his mind. He lunged forward, trying to stop me. "Fiona Shaw! You can’t do this! That was decades of my life’s work! How could you do this?"My mother cried as she tried to hug me. "I’m sorry, my good daughter. I was wrong!"My brother was probably a true love-add

"She was the Shaw family’s true heiress, yet no one loved her. They even accused her of murder.""Fiona really did so much for them. I shouldn’t have insulted her earlier. I’m sorry...""She was allergic to dogs, yet she still took Lucky with her when she left. I’m actually going to cry."My brother, Ethan Shaw, looked confused. This was not what Charlotte told him. Wasn’t I the one who drove Lily Hart away? Hadn’t I threatened to ruin her?Why did Lily look as if she and I were actually close?Even his girlfriend had been part of Charlotte’s scheme against me!And then...His face suddenly went paper white, and he murmured, "There was poison in that bottle..."The poison in the wine only took effect when combined with something in that night’s dinner. No one expected Charlotte to snatch my wine, and no one imagined I would leave the Shaw family so decisively. In the end, by a cruel twist of fate, he killed the person who actually drove Lily away, but he refused to accept it.He had

Charlotte stood beside him with a grief-stricken expression. This wasn’t the first time they had acted this way, so I was used to it and paid little attention. For the first time, my brother gave me a bottle of red wine. He said no one in high society could avoid drinking, so I needed to learn how to appreciate wine.I didn’t think much of it. After he left, I sat on the couch and opened the bottle.I knew nothing about wine. It smelled rich and fragrant, but before I could take a sip, Charlotte walked over and snatched the glass from my hand. With no one else around, she mocked me without holding back.“You think you’re worthy of drinking wine this expensive? Country bumpkins like you should stick to tap water.”She drained the glass I had poured and tossed the rest of the bottle into the trash.“Get this through your head. I’d rather throw it away than let you drink it. You’re. Not. Worthy.”She emphasized every word.Suddenly, I felt utterly drained.I had lived a hard life ever si

“How could I not blame her?”Once again, I became the target of the audience’s fury.“Can everyone stop making excuses for Fiona? There’s clearly something wrong with her character. What gave her the right to look down on Lily?”“The things she said were disgusting. How could she be so vicious to her own brother’s girlfriend? Wishing death on someone? She was insane.”“Charlotte really is a good person. Anyone could understand why she wanted praise. If she hadn’t comforted Lily, Lily might not have simply disappeared. She might have taken her own life.”Everything I had done before was dismissed in that moment.I could be difficult and spoiled, but I couldn’t disregard human life or forget where I came from after growing up in the countryside.Someone shouted, “Even if Fiona didn’t kill Charlotte, someone should investigate what happened to Lily. What if Fiona killed her too?”The audience was thrilled. They couldn’t wait to brand me a criminal and see me receive the punishment they th

But Charlotte knew it hadn’t been her, and she knew exactly who made the deposit. She leaned against my father’s chest and glanced up at me, raising one eyebrow. It looked half like a boast and half like a challenge.Onstage, my father looked utterly defeated. His precious daughter had gotten pregnant after sleeping with another man, while the daughter he despised had scrimped and struggled, selling her clothes and taking on part-time work to raise money for him.To make matters worse, Liam Lawson and his fiancée were standing among the audience.A sharp slap rang through the room as Liam’s fiancée struck him across the face. He tried to grab her arm and explain, only for her to slap him again.“Liam, what did you tell me back then? You said you were drunk and mistook her for me. I forgave you because I didn’t want to destroy the alliance between our families.“And what happened afterward? You kept meeting Charlotte behind my back, got her pregnant, and then refused to take responsibi

“Don’t slack off, okay?”I didn’t know why my eyes suddenly stung, but I quickly nodded. “Of course!”By the time I finished tutoring and returned, my mind felt like mush, and my stomach was cramping badly. The last time I got too busy and forgot to eat, the doctor warned that continuing this way would damage my health. But I had no choice.I had so little time to earn money that I temporarily moved into the dorms.I once ran into Charlotte by accident. She was alone for once, without her usual entourage, hiding in a small grove while making a phone call.“I’m pregnant! Who else could the father be?” Her voice was frantic. “Even if nothing happened that first time, there’s no telling what happened during the other times you called me over. If you refuse to take responsibility, I’ll tell your fiancée. “Once the wedding is called off, we’ll see whether your mother gets angry enough to disown you!”The fragments of the conversation made me realize that the person on the other end was
