Elena’s POV

The morning sun does not bring warmth to the West Wing. It presses against the tall windows as nothing more than a pale smear of light, swallowed by the gray mist that clings to the glass. The air is damp, heavy, and cold. I dress slowly, my hands stiff inside Alyssa’s silk gloves, my mind replaying the dinner from last night. Alexander had not spoken a single word, but his gaze had been relentless, a silent countdown clock ticking in the shadows.

By nine o’clock, Harris knocks on my door. His knuckles rap against the carved oak with mechanical precision. My pulse leaps. I know what this means: the mandatory morning business check-in in the grand study. I smooth my gloves, lift my chin, and force my steps into a steady rhythm down the long hallway. The marble floor is cold beneath my heels, each echo a reminder that I am walking deeper into the lion’s den.

The study door opens, and a shadow falls over me instantly.

Alexander is already there. He sits behind the massive mahogany desk, his frame filling the leather chair as though it were built for him alone. His suit is sharp, immaculate, his black mask a perfect, unyielding surface. He moves with such silence that I never hear his boots against the floor. His long fingers tap against a digital tablet, the screen’s glow reflecting faintly against the mask.

I force Alyssa’s bored arrogance onto my face, though my stomach twists. I cross the room, slide into the velvet chair opposite him, and place my personal phone face‑up on the polished desk.

“You are precisely on time today, Alyssa,” Alexander murmurs. His voice is low, rough, echoing against the high walls. He sets the tablet down, leans forward, and his eyes lock onto my gloves. “Let us look at your family’s weekly asset reports. Your father is demanding another credit release.”

The words are knives. I open my mouth, ready to mimic Alyssa’s sharp disdain, when the air shatters.

My phone vibrates violently against the desk. The sound is jarring, aggressive, a metallic rattle that fills the silence. The screen lights up, bright and merciless.

In bold letters, the caller ID flashes: FATHER.

My breath catches. Cold sweat breaks across my neck. My pulse spikes so hard I feel it in my teeth. Alexander’s eyes drop to the glowing screen, then rise slowly back to my face. He sees the terror. He sees everything.

“Your phone is making a lot of noise, Alyssa,” he whispers. His tone is quiet, dangerous, a purr that coils around me. He leans forward, the mask tilting slightly. “Are you not going to answer your family?”

I force my voice steady. “Of course I am.”

He sits back, crossing his long legs, his gaze unblinking. Watching. Waiting.

I tap the screen. The receiver is cold against my ear.

My father does not wait. His voice explodes through the speaker, so loud it bleeds into the air. Alexander cannot hear the words clearly, but he hears the rage, the booming aggression.

“Elena! Tell me you secured the signatures!”

The sound of my real name slices through me. All the blood drains from my face. My chest tightens so hard I cannot breathe. The syllables are daggers. Did Alexander hear them? Did they slip through the muffled speaker? My lungs seize. My throat closes. Sweat beads beneath my gloves, dripping down my wrists. My fingers tremble so violently I nearly drop the phone.

If he knows, the mask shatters. If the mask shatters, grandmother dies.

I cannot let him see Elena. I must become Alyssa now or I am finished.

“Do not yell at me, Father!” I hiss into the receiver, forcing my voice into Alyssa’s shrill arrogance. I look directly into Alexander’s mask, acting the spoiled daughter. “I am the mistress of this estate now. I stood at that altar and signed your pathetic marriage papers. If Alexander Sterling is taking his time with his bank codes, that is a problem between you businessmen! Do not bother me with your boring office work!”

On the other end, my father pauses. Shock flickers, but cruelty returns instantly.

“Listen to me very carefully, you useless girl,” he snarls. His voice drops to a vicious whisper that chills my skin. “The banks are threatening to liquidate our company by Monday morning if that signature isn’t locked in. If Alexander walks away, our family goes to prison. Your sister’s credit lines will be frozen. And I will be left broke. I won’t have a single penny left to pay for your sick grandmother’s private room. The hospital will turn off her machines. Do you understand me? Make your husband sign those documents today!”

The words stab deeper than any blade. Monday morning. The machines. My grandmother’s life is hanging by a thread. Panic floods me, suffocating, relentless.

Alexander is watching. His silence is unbearable. He sees the twitch in my jaw, the way my gloved fingers clutch the phone until my knuckles ache. He sees everything.

“I said I will handle it!” I screech, channeling Alyssa’s temper. “Do not call my phone again. I will make him sign.”

I slam the disconnect button. The line dies. The phone slips from my glove, clattering against the desk like a gunshot.

Silence.

I slump back, burying my face in my hands. My father’s threat echoes in my skull. Monday morning. The machines. My grandmother’s breath. My secret shop is not enough. I am out of time.

I lift my head. Alexander’s gaze is waiting. Frozen. Unyielding. He leans forward, his massive frame casting a shadow across the desk.

The silence stretches. I hear the faint tick of the antique clock. The creak of leather as he shifts. His shadow spills over my hands, heavy, suffocating. He does not move. He does not speak. He lets the silence tighten around me like a rope.

Then, at last, his voice cuts through. Low. Freezing. Absolute.

“Your father sounds very desperate, Alyssa. And you look like you just saw a terrifying thing. Tell me exactly what a shallow girl like you is hiding from her husband.”

Elena’s POVI slowly pull my white silk gloves away from my face, forcing my shoulders back to hide my terror. My heart is pounding so violently against my ribs that I am certain he can see the fabric of my dress moving. I must find a way to sound like my twin sister right now, or the lie collapses.I lift my chin and meet the dark lenses of his matte‑black mask. "My father is a dramatic businessman, Alexander," I snap back, tossing my hair over my shoulder with a sharp, careless gesture to copy Alyssa's classic snobbish temper. "He is panicking because his bank lines are tangled up, and he is taking his bad mood out on me. There is no grand mystery."Alexander chuckles. Low. Dark. Empty of warmth. The sound crawls across the walls like smoke. He leans back into the heavy leather chair, his massive frame settling with deliberate ease. One long leg crosses over the other. His blunt fingers tap a slow pattern against his knee — steady, patient, merciless."Do not insul

Elena’s POVThe slam of the greenhouse doors reverberates beneath the glass dome, a violent punctuation that leaves the air trembling. Then silence. Damp, warm, suffocating silence. My knees weaken, and I clutch the edge of the workbench, fingers digging into the wood as though it alone can anchor me. My heart thrashes against my ribs, frantic, a bird desperate to escape its cage."Why did she just walk away?" I whisper into the empty air, staring at the spot where Evelyn was just standing.Evelyn’s absence is more terrifying than her presence. One moment she was poised to destroy me, her words sharp as knives, and the next she bowed — bowed to nothing — before fleeing like a servant chased by shadows. I replay the image in my mind: her pale face, her rigid posture breaking, the way her hands trembled against the tablet. It was not obedience to me. It was obedience to something unseen.Perhaps my father’s office sent a directive. Perhaps a corporate crisis pulled her

I sit completely motionless at my massive slate desk, my dark eyes fixed flat on the digital monitors flashing their cold blue light across my broad shoulders. I have my black coat discarded, my charcoal dress shirt clinging tightly to my frame. My right fingers are curled into a tight fist resting on my thigh, the Vance family debt documents reflect on my laptop screen awaiting my fingerprint but I refuse to sign them. Something about my new wife does not add up, and I will not lock in this contract until I know what she is hiding.Suddenly, my chest hitches. A sharp, violent cough splits the quiet room, making my large frame tremble against the desk. I drop the pen, my teeth bared in an expression of pure, familiar agony as my scarred lungs contract, starving my mind of oxygen. The damage from that five-year-old accident is a relentless tormentor. I reach blindly toward the lower drawer where my inhaler
