Chapter 2

Auteur: Nora Blythe
Early the next morning, my mother-in-law, Anne Miller, summoned me back to the Miller family's old estate.

The moment I stepped through the door, I saw a crowd of aunts and cousins gathered around Melody in the memorial hall. I stopped short. They must have already heard about the divorce.

When I married Melody, Anne had told me that once I married into the Millers, I belonged to them, and I had to follow the family rules. Any time I did something wrong, I would be summoned to the memorial hall at the old estate to repent.

Anne sat in a high-backed armchair off to one side, watching me coldly. "Kneel."

I pressed my lips together and knelt on the cushion. In front of me stood the memorial photos of the Miller ancestors.

"You're just a man who married into this house, who's never done a thing for this family, and now you want a divorce?" Anne jabbed a finger in my face and tore into me.

"Have you thought about what a divorce would do to Mel's reputation? Your whole family are leeches. You've lived off the Millers' generosity without an ounce of gratitude."

Anne clutched her chest while Greg kept trying to calm her down. "Jason probably just wasn't thinking straight. Give him one more chance."

Melody, who had been silent, finally spoke. "Apologize to Mom, and I'll pretend you never brought up a divorce."

My knees throbbed from kneeling, but I kept my back straight. "I've made up my mind. Melody and I are getting divorced."

Melody's face darkened at once.

Anne scoffed. "Fine. You've got some backbone, I see. Then we'll just have to remind you of your place here."

She grabbed the wooden ruler from the table and brought it down hard across my back.

In the years since I married Melody, I had endured this family discipline more than once. Her relatives would take turns with the ruler, striking me one blow at a time.

The last turn went to Greg. He took the ruler with a look of regret, but his blow came down hard and fast, right in the middle of my back.

The force knocked me to the floor, and I nearly lost my breath. My back was on fire. Blood soaked through my shirt, and the pain left me shaking all over.

A flicker of reluctance crossed Melody's eyes, but she still turned her head away.

"Let's see what your parents think when they hear you're planning to divorce." Anne's voice rose as she took out her phone to call my parents.

My parents were farmers who lived deep in the mountains, and neither of them was in good health. Getting here from their home meant traveling dozens of miles along mountain roads.

"Don't tell them..." I grabbed the leg of Anne's pants, but she yanked it free in disgust.

She ignored my pleading. The call had already gone through.

The moment my parents heard I wanted a divorce, their first instinct was to apologize.

They endured insult after insult from Melody's family and kept apologizing. "We're coming right now, Anne. No matter what, we are family. Please don't be too upset..."

Even after the call ended, the scornful remarks kept coming. "What right do those country hicks have to call themselves my family?"

Anne pulled Melody closer. "I told you from the start. A man like this marrying into our family is an embarrassment."

Then she turned on me. "You'll stay right here on your knees until you admit you were wrong!"

Soon only Melody and I were left in the memorial hall.

The pain in my back kept me from straightening up. Blood glued my shirt to my skin, and all I could do was hold on and keep breathing.

Melody crouched in front of me. "Jason, is it really so hard to give in? Why do you keep comparing yourself to Greg? After my sister died, at least he had a son to raise.

"You've put up with it all these years. Why can't you put up with it a little longer?"

I had heard those words countless times. But I didn't want to put up with it anymore.

When I said nothing, Melody ran out of patience. "Let's see just how stubborn you really are!"

The door slammed shut.

I was locked in the memorial hall for a full day and night. With no food, no water, and all the blood I had lost, everything went black, and I passed out.

When I opened my eyes again, another night had passed. I staggered to my feet. As soon as I reached the door, I heard my mother pleading.

"Anne, Jason's father was in a car accident on the way here. We left in such a hurry. Could you lend us some money for his surgery?"

Jason's POVMelody's eyes lit up instantly. In the two weeks since I had last seen her, she had become a complete mess. "Jason, I knew you'd come back."Looking at her like this, I didn't feel the slightest bit sorry for her.She noticed the man behind me and pointed at him. "Who's he?""Hello, Ms. Miller," the man said. "I called you before. I'm Mr. Moore's divorce lawyer."Melody stared at me in disbelief. Then she started crying and begging me."Jason, I was wrong. I wanted to turn myself in, but you saw it yourself. I'm being locked in the house."I didn't know it would end like this. Please don't divorce me..."From now on, you can spend as much as you want. I won't control it anymore."Seeing how endlessly remorseful she looked, I only found it laughable. My parents were dead. How could I ever forgive her?She seemed to notice the distance in my eyes and began to panic. My divorce lawyer spoke up. "Ms. Miller, when you do wrong, you should be punished."Mr. Moore has

"I'm sorry. I didn't know it would turn out like this."The people around her thought she had lost her mind. But only she understood what had happened. She didn't care what anyone thought. Instead, she went home to find her mother. "Mom, Jason's mother killed herself. I'm going to turn myself in."At the news, Anne froze for a moment, then rushed to distance herself from it. "She killed herself. What does that have to do with you? You're not going."Nearby, Greg panicked the instant he heard Melody wanted to turn herself in, since he had been part of it too. "His mother killed herself. Why would you turn yourself in?"All the strength drained out of Melody. She slid to her knees on the floor and covered her eyes with her hands, sobbing so hard her whole body shook."But we're all responsible for his mother's death. If we hadn't stripped her, she never would have jumped."Mom, didn't you say Jason would come back? But his divorce lawyer called me. He's going to sue."Her sobs we

Anne didn't seem to care in the least. "That's right, Mel. If you ask me, what's on the ground is just paint."If you cave today, he'll only push you around more later. Besides, his parents need us to help sell their produce. I promise you, in a few days he'll come back and apologize."Melody gradually came back to herself and slowly nodded. If Jason's mother had really died, he wouldn't be this quiet. He would lose his mind and come looking for her. He would have it out with her in a huge fight. But all this time had passed, and there had been no word at all."Right. Mom, you're right. If his mom had really died, he'd definitely come to fight with me."There hadn't been a peep out of him, so he must be throwing a tantrum, trying to make her give in first. She quickly texted Jason.Melody: [I'll give you one week. As long as you admit you were wrong, I'll forgive you.]Melody: [Jason, don't play these games with me.]Only after sending the messages did she finally let out a br

Third-person POVMelody was restless the whole way to the hospital. Jason Moore's face kept flashing through her mind, along with the sight of his mother falling apart. All the way there, she kept asking herself whether she had gone too far.But before she married Jason, they had agreed on three ground rules. Every man who married into the Miller family since her grandmother's generation had been a live-in son-in-law. Every one of them had followed the same rules. Why should Jason be the exception?Melody closed her eyes and took a deep breath.Half of Greg's face was red and swollen, yet he was the one comforting her. "Mel, Jason's young and hot-headed. It's only natural that he feels things are unfair."But I never thought you two would go as far as a divorce. Or that he'd actually hit me..."Melody's lips twitched into an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry, Greg. I didn't keep him in line. It won't happen again. And he's been punished for it this time."They soon reached the hospi

The blood drained from my face. I never imagined my mother-in-law could say something like that. "What did you say?"Melody frowned, hesitant. "Mom, isn't this going a little too far..."Anne waved her hand impatiently. "What do you know? Let him off today, and tomorrow he'll be walking all over you."Will you still have any say then? You're my daughter. If anyone's going to suffer, it'll be him."Melody opened her mouth, then fell silent. My mother stood frozen, unsure what to do, but she understood exactly what Anne meant. She took off her bracelet and held it out to Anne. "Can we go now... Here's your bracelet back. I'll return the clothes once I get home."Anne eyed it with disgust and let go. The bracelet shattered on the floor.Seeing it in pieces, my mother's eyes reddened too.Melody had bought it for her before the wedding. It wasn't expensive, only a few hundred dollars. But my mother had never worn anything that nice before. She treasured it every single day and wou

The tight string inside me snapped. I stumbled toward her. After kneeling all night, I nearly fell as I hurried over, and my mother caught me at once. When she saw the welts on my back and my swollen knees, her face filled with heartache. She whirled around to confront Anne. "This is too much! How could you treat my son like this?"As far back as I could remember, my mother had always been timid and meek, never daring to raise her voice. Now she shielded me behind her and faced the Millers in a fury.Greg spoke up. "Please don't be upset, Mrs. Moore."Jason chose to marry into the Millers, so he has to follow the rules. You agreed to that when he married Mel, didn't you?"My mother's face went pale.Anne looked at her with contempt. "Is that any way to ask someone to lend you money?"My mother's indignation crumbled. Eyes red, she clung to my hand, at a loss for what to do. "We came straight over the moment Anne called."Your father had a heart attack, and before anyone could s
