Chapter 1

Jason's POV

Melody Miller's fingers froze over her phone mid-reply. She looked up at me as if she hadn't heard me right. "What did you say?"

My gaze swept over her chat with Greg Brillhart. It was nothing but transfer after transfer.

We had both married into the family, yet my monthly spending limit was only 800 dollars. Greg's was a full hundred times that.

Whenever he ran short, he went to Melody to borrow more. The Miller family rules meant nothing when it came to him.

Every time I brought it up, Melody shot me down. "My sister died young, and Greg raised their son all on his own. How can you compare yourself to him?"

When I said nothing, Melody rubbed her temples, looking weary. "All this over one little thing? Because I didn't give you money?"

I nodded. "Yes."

Melody switched off her phone and explained with forced patience, "A stomach ulcer isn't that serious. Take some anti-inflammatories and you'll be fine.

"Every cent you spend now is Miller money. It has to go where it really counts..."

I cut her off before she could finish. "Greg gets 80,000 a month for living expenses, and that's not counting anything else. We both married into this family, so why am I treated differently?"

I scoffed. "Because his wife died? Or because you're in love with him?"

Melody slammed her hand on the table and shot to her feet. "What kind of nonsense is that? Greg married into this family years ago. He's been one of us for a long time, so of course his limit is different."

The color drained from my face. It felt as if the blood in my veins had frozen solid.

People always blurt out the truth when they're upset. Three years of marriage, and she had never once seen me as one of her own.

Melody seemed to realize she had said the wrong thing. A flicker of discomfort crossed her eyes, and she reached out to take my hand.

Then there was a knock at the door. Greg had arrived.

Melody's expression softened instantly. She peeled him an apple and poured him a glass of water. To the outside world, she was a formidable businesswoman, yet she always lowered herself in front of Greg.

"Sorry to bother you two again," Greg said apologetically. "Mel, my business has run into some trouble. I might need to borrow five hundred thousand dollars from you."

The hand at my side clenched into a fist. I stared hard at Melody.

Hesitation flickered across her face as she weighed how to answer.

Greg glanced at me and sighed. "I know this puts you in a tough spot, but I wouldn't have come to you if I had any other choice."

Sure enough, that was all it took. Melody went into the bedroom and took a bank card out of the safe. "There's exactly five hundred thousand on this. Take it."

I went pale and grabbed her wrist. "You're giving him this money?"

That was the fund she and I had set aside for having a baby. Five hundred thousand dollars to cover her pregnancy, her recovery after the birth, and the nursery, among other things. I had already reached out to a designer a week ago.

And now she was handing all of it to Greg.

"If you want to lend him money, I won't say a word. But why does it have to be this..."

Melody shook off my hand and pressed the card into Greg's palm. "The PIN is my birthday."

She turned back to me. "Greg has big things ahead of him. Besides, it's not like we're short on money."

Not short on money. Yet when I asked her for two hundred dollars to have surgery, she said no.

"You two are getting divorced?" Greg's surprised voice rang out as he pointed at Melody's laptop screen. "Jason, as your brother-in-law, I have to give you some advice. You've already married into the Millers, so stop getting these ridiculous ideas..."

His phony act left the anger stuck in my chest. I pointed at the door and shouted, "Get out."

Melody's face darkened, and she looked at me coldly. "Greg, let me take you home first.

"If he wants a divorce, let him have one. Let's see how far he gets on his own."

She slammed the door behind her.

I sank onto the sofa just as my divorce lawyer called. "Mr. Moore, have you made a final decision about the divorce from Ms. Miller?"

I took a breath to steady myself. "I have."

Jason's POVMelody's eyes lit up instantly. In the two weeks since I had last seen her, she had become a complete mess. "Jason, I knew you'd come back."Looking at her like this, I didn't feel the slightest bit sorry for her.She noticed the man behind me and pointed at him. "Who's he?""Hello, Ms. Miller," the man said. "I called you before. I'm Mr. Moore's divorce lawyer."Melody stared at me in disbelief. Then she started crying and begging me."Jason, I was wrong. I wanted to turn myself in, but you saw it yourself. I'm being locked in the house."I didn't know it would end like this. Please don't divorce me..."From now on, you can spend as much as you want. I won't control it anymore."Seeing how endlessly remorseful she looked, I only found it laughable. My parents were dead. How could I ever forgive her?She seemed to notice the distance in my eyes and began to panic. My divorce lawyer spoke up. "Ms. Miller, when you do wrong, you should be punished."Mr. Moore has

"I'm sorry. I didn't know it would turn out like this."The people around her thought she had lost her mind. But only she understood what had happened. She didn't care what anyone thought. Instead, she went home to find her mother. "Mom, Jason's mother killed herself. I'm going to turn myself in."At the news, Anne froze for a moment, then rushed to distance herself from it. "She killed herself. What does that have to do with you? You're not going."Nearby, Greg panicked the instant he heard Melody wanted to turn herself in, since he had been part of it too. "His mother killed herself. Why would you turn yourself in?"All the strength drained out of Melody. She slid to her knees on the floor and covered her eyes with her hands, sobbing so hard her whole body shook."But we're all responsible for his mother's death. If we hadn't stripped her, she never would have jumped."Mom, didn't you say Jason would come back? But his divorce lawyer called me. He's going to sue."Her sobs we

Anne didn't seem to care in the least. "That's right, Mel. If you ask me, what's on the ground is just paint."If you cave today, he'll only push you around more later. Besides, his parents need us to help sell their produce. I promise you, in a few days he'll come back and apologize."Melody gradually came back to herself and slowly nodded. If Jason's mother had really died, he wouldn't be this quiet. He would lose his mind and come looking for her. He would have it out with her in a huge fight. But all this time had passed, and there had been no word at all."Right. Mom, you're right. If his mom had really died, he'd definitely come to fight with me."There hadn't been a peep out of him, so he must be throwing a tantrum, trying to make her give in first. She quickly texted Jason.Melody: [I'll give you one week. As long as you admit you were wrong, I'll forgive you.]Melody: [Jason, don't play these games with me.]Only after sending the messages did she finally let out a br

Third-person POVMelody was restless the whole way to the hospital. Jason Moore's face kept flashing through her mind, along with the sight of his mother falling apart. All the way there, she kept asking herself whether she had gone too far.But before she married Jason, they had agreed on three ground rules. Every man who married into the Miller family since her grandmother's generation had been a live-in son-in-law. Every one of them had followed the same rules. Why should Jason be the exception?Melody closed her eyes and took a deep breath.Half of Greg's face was red and swollen, yet he was the one comforting her. "Mel, Jason's young and hot-headed. It's only natural that he feels things are unfair."But I never thought you two would go as far as a divorce. Or that he'd actually hit me..."Melody's lips twitched into an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry, Greg. I didn't keep him in line. It won't happen again. And he's been punished for it this time."They soon reached the hospi

The blood drained from my face. I never imagined my mother-in-law could say something like that. "What did you say?"Melody frowned, hesitant. "Mom, isn't this going a little too far..."Anne waved her hand impatiently. "What do you know? Let him off today, and tomorrow he'll be walking all over you."Will you still have any say then? You're my daughter. If anyone's going to suffer, it'll be him."Melody opened her mouth, then fell silent. My mother stood frozen, unsure what to do, but she understood exactly what Anne meant. She took off her bracelet and held it out to Anne. "Can we go now... Here's your bracelet back. I'll return the clothes once I get home."Anne eyed it with disgust and let go. The bracelet shattered on the floor.Seeing it in pieces, my mother's eyes reddened too.Melody had bought it for her before the wedding. It wasn't expensive, only a few hundred dollars. But my mother had never worn anything that nice before. She treasured it every single day and wou

The tight string inside me snapped. I stumbled toward her. After kneeling all night, I nearly fell as I hurried over, and my mother caught me at once. When she saw the welts on my back and my swollen knees, her face filled with heartache. She whirled around to confront Anne. "This is too much! How could you treat my son like this?"As far back as I could remember, my mother had always been timid and meek, never daring to raise her voice. Now she shielded me behind her and faced the Millers in a fury.Greg spoke up. "Please don't be upset, Mrs. Moore."Jason chose to marry into the Millers, so he has to follow the rules. You agreed to that when he married Mel, didn't you?"My mother's face went pale.Anne looked at her with contempt. "Is that any way to ask someone to lend you money?"My mother's indignation crumbled. Eyes red, she clung to my hand, at a loss for what to do. "We came straight over the moment Anne called."Your father had a heart attack, and before anyone could s
