Estelle’s POV

Zen looked at Byron like he was seeing a stranger, and for a second, I thought he might actually swing at him.

“Get out,” Zen said coldly.

“Zen, listen to me,” Byron said, taking a small step forward while he held his hands out like he was trying to calm down a wild animal.

“I told you to get out, all of you,” Zen said, turning his head slowly to look at the Zeta and the Delta who were standing by the large oak table.

The two men didn't say another word, and they hurried toward the exit with their heads down.

Byron stayed where he was, looking from Zen to me and back again, but then he sighed and followed the others out.

“You can let go of my hand now,” I said, looking down at where his skin met mine. My heart was thumping against my ribs, and I was trying to figure out if I was more angry at the council or at the fact that Zen was treating me like a shield.

“I’m not letting you go anywhere,” Zen said, finally loosening his grip but not moving his ha

  • The Rejected Heiress    Chapter 13. Preparations

The sun came through the window the next morning, hitting my face and waking me up way earlier than I wanted to be awake. I rolled over and tried to pull the blanket over my head, but a loud, rhythmic knocking on the door made that impossible. I groaned and sat up, rubbing my eyes and looking around the guest room that had been given to me. "Come in," I called out, my voice sounding scratchy from sleep. The door opened and Byron stepped inside, closing it behind him with a soft click. Now I wished that I had asked who it was. He didn't look like he had slept much, and he stood by the foot of the bed with his arms crossed over his chest. He looked at me for a long time without saying anything, then he let out a long breath and shook his head."The Alpha is busy with the council this morning, so I thought I should speak to you while he isn't around to stop me," he said, taking a few steps closer until he was standing right over me."Good morning to you too, Byron," I said, pulling th

  • The Rejected Heiress    11. Return

Chapter 11...Estelle’s POVWe returned to the Pack House the next day just as the sun dipped lower in the sky, staining the stone walls in a dull orange glow. Zen had a cave in the woods where he usually spent time alone, so we had passed the night there in awkward silence. The moment we stepped inside, it felt like the air was unusually tense. I turned to say something to break the tension between us but the words stuck in my throat. Besides, I was in no mood to speak to him. A uniformed maid walked up to us as we walked through the large hallway, “Alpha Zen,” she had a polite smile on her face, “the council is gathered in the advisory room. I was told to inform you that they would like to see you.” I saw Zen's hand clamp into a fist. Whatever this was about, Zen obviously did not like it. “I'll go to my room,” I said, not wanting to be any part of what this was. Zen gave me a stern look, “you're following me.” “Why? Are assassins waiting in my room for me?” my response was

Chapter 10...Estelle’s POVI swallowed, licked my lips, and looked away while rolling my eyes. “What now? You’re going to accuse me of being a spy? Anything to feed your narrative, is it not?”Zen’s hands latched onto my face gently and made me face him. “I never said anything like that, Estelle. I’ll repeat your words to you: who hurt you that makes you think the way that you? But I mean, I already know.”“Well, I didn’t stick around to listen much,” I told him, blinking rapidly to fight my tears. To say I felt overwhelmed would have been an understatement.“Like, just let me go wherever I want to go. I can't just stay here.”“And so I let you go wherever you want to go, Estelle? You get killed on the road or something. And if you don't get killed, is there any place who would welcome you as much as I have welcomed you?”“If that is your definition of welcome, then I'm sure that I am not educated properly.”Zen scoffed and let out a huff. “So what happens to your revenge arc? I t

  • The Rejected Heiress    9. Escape

Chapter 9...Estelle’s POVI had spun out of the dining area, bumping right into Byron in the hallway. He gave me a look with slight disgust on his features. I paused, blinking back tears. I wiped them hastily when I heard the word “assassin,” and the Beta did have some conspiracies about me.I didn't stay to listen further because I felt Zen would agree with him. My being here meant that I would never be welcomed. The maids didn't even respect me, and Zen, who was supposed to teach me, who was supposed to help me get my revenge, didn't even trust me enough. All his promises had been false, and now he was listening to people feeding him whatever information they had about me. What was the point of anything? At first, I had gone back to my room, lying down and staring at the ceiling, counting the tiles on it. But even as I lay there, I knew it was only a matter of time before I would be called and probably beheaded, humiliated, and stripped of dignity. I’d rather kill myself than fa

  • The Rejected Heiress    8. Plot

Chapter 8...Zen’s POVThe moon be cursed. How did I not know from the start that Estelle was a fury flame I could not put out?I should have seen past all that wreckage the betrayal had caused.“Don’t,” I whispered again, trying to pry the knife gently away from her hands.“You have no right to tell me what to do,” she spat, looking at me with glossy blue eyes that held so much hatred. I could see the pain in them, and it broke something inside of me. “Estelle. Don’t do what you’ll regret,” I said in a gentle voice. Her hand shook lightly and slowly her resolve weakened. I lowered her hands gently to her side let out a breath I didn’t even know I was holding. Why did I care of she killed her self or not? Was she of any benefit? She scoffed and pushed me away, hurling the knife across the room. I watched as it embedded itself firmly into the wall. She stormed away angrily, and then I sighed. Was there any point in chasing after her?“Well, that was something,” a voice called fr
