Chapter 4: Estate

Sera picked up the folded document but did not open it right away.

Lucian watched her hands without speaking. The vehicle rolled forward along the private road, black stone walls rising on both sides, the estate growing larger ahead.

“What happens if I don’t sign,” she said. It was not quite a question.

“Then you are a girl with an awakening bloodline and no pack, in a car outside my gates. Blackthorn already knows you are gone. Isolde saw your face change. She will have told Kael that much even if she does not understand what she saw. Others will hear of it by morning. I cannot protect what is not mine to protect. That is not sentiment. It is how the law works.”

“And if I sign, I belong to you instead.”

“You would have my name. My walls. My guard between you and anyone who comes for you.” A pause. “It is not nothing.”

Sera looked down at the document again. Her hands, she noticed distantly, had stopped shaking somewhere in the last hour, not because the fear was gone, but because there was no more room for it beside everything else pressing in.

She opened the contract. The language was dense and precise: marriage under dual law, immediate, binding, her name already printed beside his. Spaces waited for signatures and seals.

“You already had this drawn up,” she said. “Before you knew whether I would survive the night.”

“I had it drawn up the moment I learned what you were.”

That answer raised more questions than it settled, but the estate was close now, and the howls behind them had not stopped, and she was so tired of being the thing other people decided the fate of without asking. She thought of Kael’s voice carrying over the clearing, of Isolde’s satisfied smile, of the blade that had nearly opened her throat in the dirt. Nobody had asked her anything tonight. If she was going to belong to someone by morning, she wanted it to at least be her own hand on the pen.

Lucian held out a black pen.

Sera took it, hesitated with the tip hovering over the line, and then signed her full name. The ink settled dark against the paper.

Lucian took the document, signed beneath her name in a sharp script, then pressed a heavy silver ring into the wax seal at the bottom. The crest of a crowned wolf sank deep into the red wax.

“It is done,” he said.

The vehicle stopped at the base of wide stone steps. Two men in dark suits opened the rear doors. Lucian stepped out first, and Sera followed, the night air carrying the scent of wet stone and distant pine.

A third man waited at the top of the steps, older than Enzo, dressed the same in dark clothing, his eyes steady. He inclined his head to Lucian.

“Matteo. Secure the outer perimeter. Blackthorn will test the borders before dawn.”

Matteo’s gaze moved to Sera for a brief second, then back to Lucian. “Already in motion. Enzo is on the eastern ridge with a full team.”

Lucian placed a hand at the center of Sera’s back and guided her up the steps. The doors of the estate opened inward, warm light spilling out across black marble floors, high ceilings, long corridors, the quiet absolute.

They walked without speaking. Servants stepped aside and lowered their eyes. Lucian led her up a wide staircase and down a long hallway lined with closed doors, and at the end he opened one and stepped aside.

The room was large, furnished in dark wood, a wide bed dressed in black linen, tall windows covered by heavy curtains, a single lamp burning on a side table.

Lucian closed the door behind them.

“This is your room for tonight. Tomorrow the household will be informed of the marriage. You will wear my mark and my name in public.”

He removed his coat and laid it over a chair. The scar along his jaw stood out clearer under the lamp light.

Sera stood near the foot of the bed, her hands still marked by rope, exhaustion and grief and something like defiance all sitting uneasily together beneath her ribs. She was aware, in a distant way, that she should be more afraid than she was. Perhaps she had simply run out of room for it.

Lucian stepped closer. He took one of her wrists, turned it, and examined the raw skin, his thumb brushing once across the burn.

“Isolde will pay for this. Kael will pay for ordering it.”

He released her wrist and moved to a cabinet against the wall, opening it to take out a small glass vial filled with dark liquid, which he set on the table beside the lamp.

“Drink this. It will clean the wounds and dull the scent of Blackthorn still clinging to you.”

Sera picked up the vial, uncorked it, and drank. The liquid was bitter and cold. Heat spread through her chest a moment later.

Lucian watched her throat move as she swallowed.

A sharp knock struck the door.

Matteo’s voice came through the wood. “Lucian. You need to see this.”

Lucian opened the door. Matteo stood in the hallway holding a black phone, a live video feed playing on the screen. The image showed the outer gates of the estate, a large group of wolves in shifted form pacing beyond the iron. At the front stood Kael Draven in human form, Isolde at his side, both staring at the camera.

Kael’s voice came through the speaker, cold and clear.

“Lucian Voss. You took something that still carries my pack’s blood. Return the girl before sunrise or we cross your borders and take her back in pieces.”

For a moment something flickered across Kael’s face on the screen, there and gone too fast for Sera to name it from across the room. It didn’t look like territorial anger. It looked closer to a man watching something slip through his hands that he hadn’t realized he still wanted.

Lucian’s expression did not change.

“She signed the contract,” he said into the phone. “She carries my name now. Cross my borders and I will return your pack to you in pieces instead.”

He ended the feed and handed the phone back to Matteo.

“Double the guard on every entrance. No one enters. No one leaves until I say.”

Matteo nodded and left.

Lucian closed the door again and turned fully to Sera.

“They will not wait until sunrise.”

As if to prove his words, a distant explosion rolled through the night. The windows rattled once. Somewhere on the grounds an alarm began to sound in short, hard bursts.

Lucian’s eyes locked on hers.

“Stay in this room. Lock the door behind me.”

He stepped into the hallway. Before the door fully closed, the sound of automatic gunfire erupted from the front of the estate.

The last thing Sera saw was Lucian’s back as he moved toward the stairs at a run.

Lucian returned with a folder under one arm and two cups of something hot that smelled of bitter herbs.Sera had not slept, though she had lain still with her eyes closed long enough to lose track of the hours. She sat up as he entered, accepting the cup without asking what was in it. The liquid was strong and earthy. Heat spread through her chest after the first swallow.“Blackthorn pulled back to their border at dawn,” Lucian said, taking the chair across from the cot. “They will regroup. It buys us a day, maybe two.”“And then?”“And then we are not here when they come back.”He set the folder on the table between them but did not open it yet. Sera watched his hands. They were steady, the same hands that had cut the rope from her wrists and later examined the burns Isolde’s men had left.“Your bloodline is called the silver line,” he said. “It has not surfaced in a confirmed carrier in six generations. Most packs believe it died out entirely. I did not believe that.”“How did you k

Kael’s voice hung in the dark, calm in a way that made it worse.Sera stood frozen at Lucian’s side, her eyes straining against the blackness for the shape of him. She could hear breathing, more than one set, close to the broken doorway. Somewhere behind them Matteo’s rifle shifted, a small mechanical click that meant a safety coming off. The air in the room still carried the sharp cold left by her power, mixed with the iron scent of blood from the two bodies on the floor.“You are not welcome in this house,” Lucian said. His voice carried none of the urgency from a moment before. If anything it had gone flatter, colder.“I am not asking for welcome,” Kael said. “I am asking for what is mine.”“She signed a contract. She is Voss.”“She is Blackthorn blood before she is anything with your name stamped on it.” A pause, and when Kael spoke again his voice had moved, closer to the doorway now. “Seraphina. Come here.”Sera did not move. Her hands were still slick with blood that was not he

The heavy bolt slid into place with a solid click. She stepped back as the sounds of the attack rolled through the estate in waves outside the room. Automatic gunfire cracked in short bursts. Wolves snarled. Men shouted orders. Another explosion shook the floor hard enough to rattle the lamp on the side table. She moved to the tall windows and pulled one curtain aside a fraction. From the upper floor she could see part of the front grounds: floodlights had snapped on across the lawn, black-clad figures moving in tight formations behind low stone walls, and beyond the iron gates a larger mass of wolves pressing forward. Muzzle flashes lit the dark in bright white streaks.A body in Blackthorn leather fell near the gate and did not rise.Sera let the curtain fall back into place. The gunfire grew louder, closer. Footsteps pounded down the hallway outside her door. Someone shouted Lucian’s name. Another voice answered with a string of sharp commands. The fight had moved inside the main b

He turned into the darker trees at a steady pace, drawing her with him while alarm howls rose higher and closer behind them.Branches snapped under heavy paws. Voices shouted orders through the forest. He did not run, choosing instead paths that stayed in the deepest shadow. Sera kept pace beside him, her bare feet silent on the pine needles. The red moon broke through the canopy in thin shards of light. The scent of blood from the hollow still clung to the air.A large gray wolf burst from the undergrowth to their left, teeth bared. The man released Sera’s hand for half a second. His arm moved once, a black blade appearing in his grip and leaving it just as fast. The wolf dropped mid-leap and did not rise. The door opened without a knock.Three figures stepped into the cabin. The first carried a lit torch. Isolde Kane stood in front. Two large males from the pack flanked her, both wearing the dark leather of Kael’s personal guard.Isolde looked around the cabin once, narrow bed, uneven chair, cold hearth, before settling on Sera.“You should have left already,” Isolde said.Sera stayed seated on the edge of the bed, hands flat on her knees, though her heart had begun to slam against her ribs. One of the guards closed the door behind them. The latch clicked into place.Isolde took a single step closer. “Kael gave you a chance to walk away. You sat here instead. That makes this simpler.”The second guard moved to the small table and set a length of rope on it. Torchlight gleamed on the fibers.Sera’s gaze tracked the rope, then returned to Isolde. Cold dread pooled low in her stomach, but she kept her face still. She would not give Isolde that too, not after everything else the night had
