Keegan shook her lightly. Rae heard his voice from a distance. He was far away, so far that his voice echoed. He was telling her to wake up, pleading almost. Her sleep was too peaceful. She didn’t want to wake up. She didn’t know where she was but it was a comfortable place. She was totally relaxed and she couldn’t remember feeling this way in a long time. If it weren’t for Keegan’s voice in her ear, she would go on sleeping forever. She opened her mouth to tell him to go away. She didn’t want to be disturbed. She had forgotten about what had happened earlier with Fred and how she almost died. A week had passed and Rae made a full recovery. Her feet still tingled whenever she stood for too long but she was better than before. She didn't feel pain on her neck and whenever she felt the area, she felt the scars. She didn't have a mirror so she couldn't see them but Keegan guaranteed her that he couldn't tell where the scars were. She sensed that he was lying to her but she appreciated the effort. He didn't want her to feel bad about what had happened but as much as his efforts were helpful, they were also in vain. She wouldn't be able to get the incident with Fred from her mind that easily. As the days passed and she interrogated Keegan, she got a clearer understanding of what went down that terrible night. Keegan was reluctant to share the truth with her but when she threatened to leave he told her everything she wanted to know. The truth was simpler yet more haunting than she assumed. Things between them had changed.The change happened practically overnight. They woke up and turned to look at each other simultaneously and it was something that had never happened before. The intensity of his gaze stunned her. It made her shiver involuntarily and she was forced to hide in the bathroom while he prepared breakfast for the two of them. She wished she had a mirror so she could see the look on her face. She didn't doubt that she was blushing heavily. Her cheeks were warm to the touch. What was happening? Keegan sighed and drank a whole bottle of water in one go. Rae watched him anxiously. She knew it had something to do with her pack. Her old pack, she meant. It was the reason why he didn't want to tell her the truth. Why he was hesitating. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and said, "It's about BloodMoon. Things aren't well."She was surprised by her need to know the truth. It was almost overpowering. "Why? What did you hear?"Keegan searched her face with his eyes and she resisted the urge to shout at him. "I have the right to know, alright? Tell me what the problem is." She couldn't begin to imagine what he had to say to her. What could be so bad that he did he want to talk about it?"It's your father," he said finally. "What about him?" she asked with a frown. Her heart began racing and her palms sweated. She wiped them on her shorts. She wasn't prepared for what he had to say. Not in the slightest. "I'm sorry, Rae," he said. The kiss was still on Rae’s mind. As much as she tried, she couldn’t forget it. She couldn’t push the thought of him out of her mind. She could say that he was a distraction from the pain she felt upon hearing the news of her father’s demise and the thought that she might be (was) responsible. She was by no means alright, though. As much as she was thrilled by how she felt when he kissed her, she couldn’t ignore that her family had been turned upside down because of her. Yes, she had the right to leave and for that she would never be sorry, but although she was tremendously upset with her parents for concealing the truth, she didn’t want them to get hurt. She tried not to think too much about them when she left and she could say that she succeeded. She thought mostly about the past and not necessarily the future, like how they were doing without her. Time seemed to be going by a lot slower than usual. It had been several days since Keegan told Rae that her father had died. The feelings of guilt and devastation left her. She was back to being her usual self. The thought still saddened her but it was in no way like the first days after she heard the news. That was the funny thing about grief and loss. It passed. Everything in life eventually came to an end, even pain, no matter how unbearable it was. Her relationship with Keegan was what changed tremendously. It was the little things that she noticed first. He would tell her where he was going and return when he said he would. He was more open about the happenings around the camp and told her which wolves were not to be trusted under any circumstance. It was a relief to know that he finally trusted her enough to tell her what he knew. They felt closer than ever before. She would give him her advice and he’d take it if he felt it could be used. Rae dreamt of Kara again. She hated that, because then she’d think about her sister for the whole day. She avoided thinking about any of her relatives for her own well-being. She didn’t want another depressive episode. She was acclimatizing to her new reality and didn’t need any unnecessary hindrance. Thinking of home was never good for her. She tore the piece of meat she was eating in two easily with her fingers. Juice dripped down the side of her hand. She placed it in her mouth and chewed. Although there was nothing particularly wrong with the meat, she was tired of eating it day after day. She knew how ungrateful she sounded but she wished there was more variety. “Rae,” someone was whispering her name. “Rae.”She cracked an eye open. It was dark and the door to the caravan was open. Panic kicked in but she calmed down instantly when she saw Keegan standing beside her. Her heart was racing. She sat up slowly. She felt immensely tired. “What’s the matter? Where were you?”“Gone,” he answered. “I’m back now. Were you worried?”Rae nodded. Her head hurt from doing so and she didn’t know why. He kept looking at her face and refused to look away. She was glad that he was back. She asked him, “Why did you wake me?”“I wanted to have a good look at your face,” he answered. “Is that too much to ask?”“Keegan, you know we can’t,” was her answer.
