"Why do you keep hiding in the shadows?" Luna leaped and whirled around, her pulse pounding. In the dim hallway light, Roman's shadow emerged, appearing large and strong. Even in the low light, she could make out the strong angles of his face, the black sweep of his cloak, and the piercing amber of his eyes. His citadel's corridors appeared suddenly more claustrophobic and smaller, as though the stone itself were yielding to his power. Trying to sound composed, Luna answered, "I... I wasn't hiding." Her heart pounded as she searched for a plausible lie. Roman's lips formed a wry and humorous smile as he said, "I was... just... listening." His voice encircled her and entered her mind, asking, "Are you listening again, little thief?"

Not just for ears and sight, the word "thief" has many meanings. She began to say, "I," but he interrupted her with a raised palm and squinted his eyes like a predator assessing its victim. What creatures reside within these stones? "Do you ev

  • The Rejected Luna    The Alpha's Hold

"Are you listening once more, little thief?" His voice was low enough to touch her ear and send a thrill down her spine that she hated, like silk steeped in steel. Luna's breath caught in her throat as she turned abruptly, and there he was, Roman, so near that his shadow appeared to engulf hers, his eyes shining in the dim hallway light. "I wasn't," Thin and fragile, her denial perished. With the cool menace of a predator who had already cornered its victim, Roman cocked his head to study her. Slowly and deliberately, his hand raised, stroking a stray hair from her cheek. "Don't tell lies," he replied quietly. "I could hear the rhythmic changes in your heart." Luna's palms were damp as she placed her back against the chilly stone wall. "Perhaps I was simply walking past." "Walking past Rafael and Cassian talking about loyalty oaths?" A tiny curvature of his lips, not quite a smile. "You wander in an interesting way." She felt a knot in her stomach. The tension betwee

“Do you enjoy spying, Luna?”The words slithered against her ear before her breath even steadied. She froze, caught like prey, every muscle stiffening. Roman’s voice, low, velvet-wrapped steel, was not raised, not loud, but carried the weight of command that filled every corner of the corridor. She hadn’t heard him approach. He was simply there, behind her, as if he had stepped out of the very shadows she thought had hidden her.Her lips parted, but no sound came.A faint chuckle followed, close enough that the warmth of his breath stirred the loose strands at her temple. “Silence? That’s unlike you. You usually have something clever ready. What happened, little thief? Did the dark finally steal your tongue?”Her pulse hammered. Her hands balled into fists at her sides, not in defiance but to stop them from shaking. She couldn’t let him see the fear. Not him. Not when his very presence pulled the air tight around her lungs.“I wasn’t, ” Her voice cracked, and she cursed it. She swallo

  • The Rejected Luna    The Enforcer of the Alpha

"Have you heard it?" Luna pressed her back against the wet wall and said. She tried to sound calm, but her voice trembled. The huge, immobile shadow of Cassian swept over her like a storm. He spoke in a low, playful, almost predatory tone. "Listen, young one?" Luna felt her heart thump. In the hallways of Roman's fortress, she had anticipated a lot, but she had not anticipated a guard who could chill her with a single inquiry. She tried to maintain her composure as she said, "I thought I heard... someone." He cocked his head, his piercing grey eyes and sharp cheekbones gleaming in the torchlight. Eyes that appeared to remove all pretence, eyes like frozen steel. He whispered, "Here, curiosity is a hazardous companion." Like the actual stone walls, his presence crushed down on her. "And you? you are just too inquisitive." Instinctively, she stepped back, her bare feet slapping the stone as she swallowed. "I was simply strolling. I didn't mean to say, The slightest s

“Do you trust him?”The voice came low, guttural, heavy with suspicion.Luna froze where she crouched, her body pressed against the cold stone, breath held inside her chest until her lungs burned. The corridor had been dark, but the chamber she stumbled near pulsed with firelight, spilling shadows that swayed and bent across the walls. She hadn’t meant to find it. She had only followed the echo of boots, the faint sound of voices, Roman’s voice among them, and now she stood at the edge of revelation. Her bare toes clung to the uneven rock floor. Her thin shift clung damp against her skin. The air itself carried smoke and iron, thick with the scent of men who ruled through fear.Inside the chamber, she could see them.Roman sat at the head of a long table carved of black oak, massive, scarred, as though clawed by wolves long ago. He leaned back in the tall chair, one arm draped lazily over its side, his presence filling the space more than the fire ever could. His dark hair fell untame

  • The Rejected Luna    The Unlocked Door

"Have you heard it?" Selene's voice shook like a thread on the verge of breaking as she said. Luna's throat tightened each breath. Even though the corridor was now empty and only audible to the shuffling of bare feet and the grinding of guards' boots ahead, Roman's laughter could still be heard in her chest. Her eyes darted aside, searching, but she pushed herself forward. The air seemed heavy and the walls seemed to lean closer, forcing her down with unseen hands. Then she noticed it. A door. Not just any door. A slab of black oak, half-hidden in shade, ajar, and studded with iron. An error. The slight creak of the hinge indicated that it had been left unlatched during the guards' passage. She believed the entire queue could hear her pulse slamming so forcefully across her ribcage. The other girls continued to move, their bodies bowed like livestock being dragged to slaughter, their heads bent. Luna, however, slowed. She waited, her bare heel brushing across stone.
