Chapter 28: The Magistrate's Trap

The heavy oak door of the administrative office swung inward with an ominous, low groan, echoing sharply through the narrow stone hallway. Julian stepped across the threshold, his head lowered just enough to feign the posture of a subdued subordinate. His heavy wool tunic felt coarse against his skin, a deliberate reminder of the humility the crown demanded of him.

Magistrate Vane sat behind his grand mahogany desk, bathed in the pale, unforgiving light of a high grated window. The room smelled faintly of dry parchment, ink, and expensive pipe tobacco. Vane did not look up immediately; instead, he continued scratching a heavy black quill across a ledger sheet, making a slow, rasping sound that set the rhythm of the room.

Julian stood quietly in front of the desk, keeping his hands clasped loosely in front of him. He forced his breathing to remain slow and even, suppressing the natural urge of an Alpha to demand attention and respect.

After a long, agonizing moment of calculated silence, Magistrate Vane finally lifted his head. His thin lips curved into a cold, superior smirk, and he adjusted his silver-rimmed spectacles, his pale gray eyes fixing onto Julian with predatory curiosity.

"You're prompt this morning, former Alpha," Vane remarked, his tone dripping with practiced amusement. "Usually, men of your former station prefer to drag their feet, hoping that time will somehow reverse the decrees of the Citadel. Or perhaps the reality of Quarters East-Twelve is simply too uncomfortable to linger in?"

"The cold makes sleep brief, Magistrate," Julian replied, his voice completely flat, weary, and stripped of all emotional resistance. "And there is little reason to linger when the duties of the day require attention. I came to check if the labor rosters for the southern snow-clearing detail have been finalized."

Vane leaned back in his high-backed leather chair, steepling his manicured fingers together under his chin. He studied Julian’s face with intense scrutiny, searching for the micro-expressions of pride or anger that usually betrayed fallen rulers. But Julian had spent decades commanding packs and reading battlefield tension; hiding his true thoughts behind a mask of dull obedience was second nature.

"The rosters are finished," Vane said smoothly, rising from his desk and walking slowly around to the front of it, leaning back against the polished wood. "In fact, I am glad you brought it up. The royal treasury has sent down a supplementary directive concerning the southern supply lines. It seems there have been... irregularities."

Julian’s heart skipped a single beat, but his face remained a mask of perfect, unblinking indifference. He tilted his head slightly, projecting mild confusion rather than guilt. "Irregularities? The pack has barely received its baseline rations, Magistrate. What irregularities could the treasury find in a valley living on the edge of starvation?"

Vane let out a sharp, cynical laugh. "That is precisely the point of the inquiry. According to the central audit reports dispatched from the capital, the grain yields harvested from the western ridge before winter should have sustained your people through at least the first month of the frost. Yet, my local ledger shows a sudden, unaccounted-for deficit. Almost two full barrels of grain and a surplus crate of salted provisions have vanished from the secondary transit registers."

Julian kept his eyes steady, meeting the magistrate's piercing gaze without flinching. "The winter storms in the high passes have been severe this year, Magistrate. Heavy snow drifts often crush the timber sheds, or wildlife tears into outdoor caches before our patrols can secure them. If supplies are missing, it is more likely due to the elements than pack theft."

Vane narrowed his eyes, stepping closer until he was standing only a few feet away from Julian. He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial whisper.

"The elements do not pick clean locks, Julian," Vane murmured, watching him like a hawk. "And wildlife does not neatly erase transport logs from the tally board. Someone in this valley is moving goods without my authorization. And if I find out that a member of the Vance Pack is hoarding resources or playing games behind my back, the consequences will not fall on a nameless warrior. They will fall directly on you and your inner circle."

The threat hung in the air, heavy and sharp like a drawn blade. Julian allowed a flicker of feigned exhaustion and quiet resignation to cross his features, letting out a heavy sigh as if burdened by the endless suspicion.

"If you suspect my people, Magistrate, you are welcome to search every corner of Quarters East-Twelve," Julian said smoothly, offering total cooperation. "We have nothing to hide because we have nothing left to take. We only wish to serve our time, clear our ledger with the crown, and keep our families alive until spring."

Vane stared at him for a long, tense second, searching for any tremor in Julian’s voice or stance. Finding none, the magistrate’s shoulders relaxed slightly, convinced once again that he was dealing with a broken man.

"See that your people keep their hands clean," Vane dismissed with a wave of his hand, turning back toward his desk. "Report to the western detail by midday. Dismissed."

Julian gave a slight, compliant nod, turned on his heel, and walked out of the office with measured, unhurried steps. Once the heavy door clicked shut behind him, the submissive posture evaporated. His jaw tightened into a lethal line. Vane was closing in, but the letters were already crossing the mountain passes. The real game had only just begun.

The morning sun finally clawed its way over the jagged, snow-draped peaks of the northern ridge, casting a harsh, pale, geometric light across the frozen, cobblestone courtyard of the Vance estate. Inside the main administrative hall, the heavy, iron-studded oak doors stood wide open, admitting a biting rush of freezing mountain wind that matched the ice-cold silence gripping the room. Every breath of the occupants plumed into thick white fog, but no one dared move or break the tense stillness.Magistrate Vane sat rigidly on a low wooden stool near the massive stone hearth, his hands bound tightly behind his back with thick, rough hemp cord. Two towering pack sentries stood guard on either side of him, their expressions carved from unrelenting stone, their golden-flecked eyes never leaving his bruised face. Vane’s once-impeccable uniform was hopelessly rumpled, his powdered hair hopelessly disheveled, and his bloodshot eyes darting frantically around the room, bearing the distinct loo

The sharp, echoing clatter of the dagger hitting the rough wooden floorboards seemed to freeze time inside the cramped, freezing confines of the packhouse quarters. Magistrate Vane gasped sharply for air, his heels kicking uselessly against the timber wall as Julian's iron grip locked securely around his collar. The veneer of absolute imperial authority that Vane had worn like impenetrable armor for months had utterly shattered, replaced instantly by the raw, animalistic terror of a man realizing he had backed the wrong apex predator into a corner."You... you can't touch me," Vane choked out, his fingers clawing weakly at Julian’s wrists in a desperate bid for physical leverage. "I am an officially appointed officer of the crown. Harming me is an act of open, treasonous rebellion—it means immediate execution for every single wolf in this wretched valley.""Rebellion?" Julian’s voice was a low, vibrating rumble that resonated deeply in the small room, charged with the latent, overwhel

The midnight air in the northern valley was biting, carrying an icy gale that rattled the timber framing of Quarters East-Twelve. Inside, the single tallow candle cast long, dancing shadows across the low ceiling. Julian sat at the edge of the narrow cot, his whetstone moving in slow, steady strokes against the edge of a hunting blade, the metallic rasp the only sound breaking the heavy silence.Seraphina paced near the small hearth, wrapping her thick wool cloak tighter around her shoulders. Her dark eyes were fixed on the heavy oak door, listening intently to the distant howling of the wind—and any sound that might indicate approaching footsteps."It has been forty-eight hours since our messengers crossed the western ridge," Seraphina broke the silence, her voice tight with suppressed anxiety. "If the mountain trappers maintained their pace, the documents should already be in the high council’s hands. But if Vane intercepted them...""He hasn't," Julian interrupted, his voice calm,

The heavy oak door of the administrative office clicked shut, cutting off the scratch of Magistrate Vane’s quill and leaving the narrow stone corridor blissfully quiet. Julian stood still for a heartbeat, his shoulders squared as he let out a long, measured breath. He had walked straight into the lion's den, danced along the razor’s edge of exposure, and walked back out without giving Vane a single shred of truth.Yet, as he began walking down the corridor toward the lower living quarters, the chilling reality of the interaction settled deep into his bones. Vane was sharper and more observant than they had anticipated. The missing supplies from the western route had already triggered alarm bells in the magistrate's meticulous mind. It was only a matter of time before Vane stopped issuing verbal threats and started tearing the packhouse apart board by board. When Julian finally slipped through the side entrance of Quarters East-Twelve, Seraphina was already waiting for him. The freezing dawn light barely managed to pierce through the thick, frost-crusted windowpanes of the old packhouse tack room, casting pale, geometric patterns of glittering ice across the uneven, dust-laden wooden floorboards. Inside, the air was heavy and thick with the distinct scent of old leather, harness oil, dry cedar wood, and the lingering, high-stakes tension of a clandestine plan that had now been set into irreversible motion. Every breath exhaled by the occupants came out in a dense, white puff of freezing condensation, but the biting chill of the subterranean room was entirely ignored by the two figures standing close beside the scarred, ink-stained oak workbench.Julian stood over the dead center of the table, his heavily calloused fingers tracing the stiff, weathered edge of the final rolled parchment letter before it was tucked securely away into a hidden, waterproof lining sewn into his thick leather belt. Across from him, Seraphina crossed her arms tightly over her ch
