Chapter 3: Wrong Face, Wrong Kind, Wrong Life

Danielle POV

The light hit me before anything else did — white, clinical, blinding. I blinked hard against it, my vision swimming as shapes resolved into a ceiling I didn't recognize. Fine plaster molding traced the edges of the room, too expensive to be anything but custom. My body felt heavy and hollow at once, like I'd been poured back into it after being emptied out somewhere else.

"Miss Carmen, you're finally awake."

A woman's voice cut through. I sat up too fast, my head spinning as I took in the room. Everything about it whispered wealth — silk drapes pooling against the floor, sheets softer than anything I'd ever owned. It felt less like waking up and more like stumbling into someone else's dream, one I hadn't been invited into.

The door opened. A man walked in, and every thought in my head simply stopped.

He was striking — tall, composed, dangerously handsome in a way that made the room feel smaller just by him standing in it. There was a stillness to him, the kind that came from never once having to wonder whether a room would arrange itself around him. He crossed to the bed and sat at its edge like he belonged there.

"Welcome back, Danielle."

A dull, throbbing pain bloomed behind my eyes. I touched gauze wrapped tight around my skull, my fingers trembling — and I couldn't tell if it was from the pain or something colder settling into my chest.

The man glanced at the woman in the white coat, his voice edged with something between concern and impatience. "Is that normal?"

"Perfectly normal for wolves waking from a coma," she said, offering a practiced smile. "Especially after two years."

Two years.

The words landed like a stone dropped into still water. My mind scrambled backward for the last thing I remembered, but there was only fog where solid ground should have been. I touched my head again — it felt wrong. Light. Narrower than I remembered, foreign under my own fingertips.

The woman had called me Miss Carmen. The man had called me Danielle.

Neither name belonged to me.

I forced my breathing to slow and asked to be excused to the bathroom. It was the longest walk of my life, some primal part of me already screaming that something was catastrophically wrong before my mind had caught up. I shut the door and turned to the mirror.

I stopped breathing.

A stranger stared back. My hand rose, slowly, disbelieving, and she raised hers in the same motion, a fraction of a second behind. My hair, once brown and heavy, now fell in soft black waves around a face I had never studied in my life. My body — the one I'd carried for thirty-one years, softened by every stress and heartbreak, every insult Jacob had ever thrown at me — was gone. In its place stood someone slender, curved in ways that felt foreign, wrapped in skin that had never once been mine.

This isn't me.

I wanted to scream, to put my fist through the glass. But they were just beyond that door, and some old, sharp instinct told me panic here would cost me more than I could afford. I gripped the sink until my knuckles went white, studying her face feature by feature — sharp cheekbones, dark unfamiliar eyes, a mouth that curved in a way mine never had — until the truth arrived with sickening certainty.

I was Danielle Carmen. The most celebrated musician in the Annular Moon Pack. A woman I had never been, wearing a face that had never once belonged to me — and somehow, it was the only face I had left. Rachel Black was gone, buried somewhere beneath two lost years.

Get answers first. Fall apart later.

I walked back out with my expression carefully blank.

"Doctor Liv, is she fully recovered?" the man — Jackson Carmen, apparently — asked. His voice hadn't warmed since he'd walked in.

"She's stable. But she'll need time."

"Good." He turned to me, his tone sharpening into something gentler, rehearsed. "Danielle, darling. I was thinking of hosting a ball. Give you the chance to reconnect with everyone."

I had no idea what to say to a man I didn't know, about people I couldn't remember. So I nodded, silent, and let him believe that was agreement.

He left. I lay back against the pillows, pinching the skin of my forearm hard enough to bruise, praying I'd wake up somewhere familiar. Anything but this.

I didn't.

The door opened again. A young woman stepped through — strikingly beautiful, poised in a way that seemed rehearsed rather than natural. She moved to the bed without hesitation and took my hand in both of hers, her grip a fraction too tight to be affectionate.

She pressed a kiss to my knuckles. Warm. Deliberate. Lingering half a second too long — long enough to stop feeling like a greeting and start feeling like a claim.

"Welcome back, Danielle."

Her smile was soft, practiced, sweet enough to be believable — until it wasn't. It shifted, slow and deliberate, curling at the edges into something closer to a grin. Something that didn't reach her eyes at all.

"We've been waiting," she said, and the words landed heavier than they should have — quiet, almost gleeful, like she was welcoming me not to recovery, but to something far worse.

A funeral I hadn't been told was mine.

I didn't know this woman. I didn't know what she meant to Danielle, or what history lived between them. But every instinct beneath my skin — some deep, wordless part of me that had survived betrayal once already — told me the same thing.

Whoever this is, she is not safe.

I smiled back anyway, and said nothing at all.

Danielle's POV "So you're telling me that you're nothing but a stupid spy working for your own mother." Anger sliced through my voice, each word deliberate, clipped, barely restrained. Vivienne bowed her head, shame radiating off her in waves I didn't have the patience to care about anymore. My hands were still trembling from everything that had happened tonight — the receipt, the diary, the assassin, and now this. "I'm so sorry, Danielle." Her voice cracked, and I hated that some part of me almost believed it was remorse. "She's threatening me now. I need your help." I wanted to lunge at her in that moment, wanted to rip out her throat with my bare hands and worry about the consequences later. My fingers curled into fists at my sides, nails biting into my palms hard enough to leave crescent marks. Every ounce of trust I'd built with her over the last several months curdled into something ugly and hot in my chest. "You traitor." Before I could finish tearing into her, Mary bur

Elias's POV "Danielle, where are you?" I kept yelling into the chaos, my voice swallowed whole by the noise of the crowd. She'd been standing right there moments ago, right in the middle of the stage, microphone still smoking in everyone's memory. Now there was nothing but bodies and flashing light where she should have been. This couldn't be happening. Not tonight. Not after everything I'd rigged, everything I'd promised her would go exactly to plan. I keyed my earpiece, static crackling in my ear before Bruce's voice cut through, breathless and panicked. "She's not backstage. I checked every exit. Elias, if she's out there alone with Jacob still—" "She's not with Jacob." I cut him off, my voice harder than I meant it to sound. "Keep the exits sealed. No one leaves until I find her." I didn't wait for a response. I couldn't afford to. Anger surged through me, hot and immediate, as I shoved past cameramen and journalists who clogged every inch of the aisle, their lenses swi

Danielle's POV "Are you sure you want to do this, Danielle?" Elias asked, after I let out a heavy sigh I hadn't meant to give away. "It's okay, Elias." My voice came out steadier than I felt as I reached up and touched his face, my fingers lingering a moment too long against his jaw. "It's all going to be fine." A tear slipped free before I could stop it, and I wiped it away quickly, though it wasn't the kind that came from fear or performance. It wasn't forced. It was something quieter than that — nostalgia, maybe, or the strange ache of being cared for by someone who wanted nothing from me in return. Someone had finally cared about me. About Rachel. Not the way a father once had, forcing me into his seat as mayor because it suited his legacy more than it ever suited me. Not the way a man once had, taking everything I sacrificed; my health, my body, the child I bore him and repaying it with his bare hands wrapped around my throat until there was nothing left of me to give. No

  • The Rejected Obese Luna Returns For War   Chapter 34: Conscious Coincidence

Lucy's POV I paced across the room, my mind replaying it over and over, Jacob's hand around my throat, the way he'd looked at me as though I were nothing more than a nuisance to be silenced. He held me. Me. Lucy Lisva. By the neck. The audacity of it made my claws itch beneath my skin, threatening to split through before I could stop them. Fury climbed up my spine in waves, hot and disorienting, until I had to press my palm flat against the wall just to steady myself. "What is going on," I whispered, my voice barely above breath, my mind already scrambling for a way out of the mess he'd shoved me into. There had to be a way to turn this. There was always a way. My phone rang, cutting through the spiral before it could pull me under completely. Leslie. "Hello. Not now, Leslie." My voice cracked with more panic than I meant to show. "Wait." Worry sharpened every syllable on his end of the line. "He's found out." I wasn't ready for more bad news. I didn't think I could t
