The Price of Refusal

Rowan’s POV

“They want my son.”

The words sounded different after saying them aloud. Not prophecy. Not bloodline. Not the gifted child. My son. Kael remained beside my bed. “No one is taking him.” Garrick waited near the doorway.

“Your Majesty, the seven packs have formed a complete circle around the northern territory.”

“How many?”

“Too many to count accurately.”

“Who commands them?”

“They haven't named a single leader.”

Kael's voice hardened. “Then find out.”

“Yes.”

“And

The Price of RegretRowan’s POVThe first thing Kael did that morning was steal my blanket. I pulled it back. “Give it to me.”“You're cold.”“I was sleeping.”“That doesn't answer my question.”“You weren't asking one.”Kael smiled and pulled the blanket over both of us. Our son slept peacefully in the crib beside the bed. I turned back to Kael.“You're getting comfortable.”“I live here.”“You're the Alpha King.”“And?”“You have a kingdom.”“I have a kingdom outside this room.”He moved closer. “Inside this room, I'm just Kael.”I smiled. “That sounds suspicious.”“Why?”“Because Kael is becoming very confident.”“Only because you keep kissing me.”“I kissed you once.”“Yesterday?”“And this morning.”“That makes two.”“You're counting?”“Of course I am.”He leaned closer. “Should I stop counting?”“No.”His smile widened. “Good.” He kissed my forehead. Then my cheek. Then the corner of my mouth. I caught his face before he could move away.“You're enjoying yourself.”“Very much.”

The Kiss He Couldn't IgnoreRowan’s POVKael was asleep. Our son was asleep too.For the first time in days, the castle was quiet. I sat beside the window with a blanket around my shoulders. Kael had insisted.“You're cold.”“I wasn't.”“You were.”“I wasn't.”“You're arguing with the person holding the blanket.”“You're holding it because you put it around me.”“And I'm not taking it back.”That had been an hour ago. Now he slept on the couch beside the baby's crib. I smiled. The Alpha King who could command thousands of wolves had lost a battle against a newborn.A small sound came from the crib. Kael woke up immediately. “What's wrong?”“He's fine.”The baby moved his tiny hands. Kael stood. “I'll take him.”“You just woke up.”“So did he.”I lifted the baby first. Kael watched me. “What?”“Nothing.”“You're doing it again.”“Doing what?”“Watching me.”He smiled. “I like watching you.”I shook my head. “You've become shameless.”“Only around you.”He came closer. The baby yawned.

You Are Not His To TakeRowan’s POVThe horn sounded again. Kael didn't move away from me. Garrick stood in the corridor, waiting for his orders. “How many packs?” Kael asked. “Three confirmed. Two more may be approaching.”“Why haven't they attacked?”“They're waiting.”“For what?”Garrick glanced at my son. “For the child.”Kael shook his head. “They can wait forever.” Garrick nodded. “There's something else.”“What?”“Damon hasn't left.”Kael turned. “Where is he?”“At the eastern gate.”Kael's voice became cold. “Alone?”“No. Nightfang warriors are with him.”I moved closer to him. “Kael.” He looked at me. “Stay here.”“You're going to him.”“Yes.”“Then I'm coming.”“No.”“I don't want Damon anywhere near my son.”“I agree.”“Then let me come.”Kael hesitated. “You're still recovering.”“I can stand.”“That isn't the point.”I held his eyes. “Then tell me the point.”Kael came closer. “The point is that every time you walk into danger, I want to put you behind ten walls.”“That s

The Man Beside MeRowan’s POVThe first thing I heard when I woke up was my son crying. The second was Kael. “I'm here.” His voice was close. I opened my eyes. Kael sat beside the bed with our son in his arms.He had changed his clothes, but he still looked exhausted. “You didn't sleep,” I said. “I slept.”“For how long?”He adjusted the baby against his chest. “Long enough.”“That means no.”His mouth curved. “You're recovering, and you're already arguing with me.”“Someone has to.”The baby made a small sound. Kael immediately looked down. “Is that hunger?”“He probably wants me.”Kael stood and brought him over. I took my son into my arms. Kael stayed beside me.For some seconds, neither of us spoke. Then he said, “How are you feeling?”“Tired.”“Pain?”“A little.”“Do you need Helena?”“No.”“Water?”“I have water.”“Food?”“I ate.”He frowned. “Half a bowl of soup isn't food.”I smiled. “You've become annoying.”“I've been annoying for months.”“No. You have become worse recently

The LockRowan’s POVThe castle shook under my feet. I held my son tighter. “What does that mean?” No one answered. Not Kael. Not Damon. Not even my father. The Chancellor smiled. “You finally understand.”“I don't.”“You are the lock.”I stepped back.“And my son?”“The one who can open what you keep closed.”Kael moved in front of me. “You've said enough.” The Chancellor laughed. “You still think this is about the child.”Kael raised his sword. “Then explain it.” The Chancellor looked at him. “The first covenant was never created to protect Aurelis.”Orion spoke. “Don't listen to him.” The Chancellor turned. “You know I'm telling the truth.” Orion's voice hardened. “I know what you did.”“You know what I had to do.”“You started a war.”“I started a war to stop something worse.”Kael lowered his sword. “What?” The Chancellor didn't answer. Instead, he looked at the first wolves behind him. “They remember.”The creatures raised their heads. One stepped forward. Its silver eyes fixed

They Came for MeRowan’s POVThe castle gates exploded. The sound shook the entire building. Guards rushed to the eastern corridor. Garrick shouted orders. “Seal the inner doors!”Kael didn't move. He remained between me and the staircase. The Chancellor's voice still echoed from below. “Not the child.” A pause. “You.” I held my son closer.“Why me?”The darkness answered. “Because the child cannot be controlled while you live.”Kael raised his sword. “Come out.” A low laugh followed. “You still believe steel can solve this.”Kael stepped into the staircase. “Come and find out.” I caught his arm. “No.” He looked back. “Rowan.”“That's what he wants.”Kael stopped. The Chancellor laughed again. “Smart child.” Kael's face hardened.“Don't call him that.” The Chancellor ignored him. “The heir finally understands.”Damon moved beside Kael. “What do you want from Rowan?”“The same thing I've wanted for centuries.”Damon's voice was cold. “What?”“His blood.”The creature on the stairs grow
