A Pack on Edge

POV: The Pack

Something had happened to the Alpha of Bloodmoon pack. Everyone felt it, the way one feels a storm coming before the sky even changes color, a pressure in the air that settled over the pack house and refused to lift.

He moped around like a kicked dog. He sighed like the world had personally handed him its problems to carry, shoulders bowed under some invisible weight he refused to name. He skipped training more than he showed up, choosing instead to brood alone somewhere nobody dared follow, disappearing for hours at a stretch and returning with the same hollow look in his eyes. Even his closest warriors kept their distance, trading uneasy looks whenever his name came up, like saying it too loud might call down whatever darkness had wrapped itself around him. A few of the younger wolves whispered that he'd been cursed. The older ones just shook their heads and said nothing, which somehow felt worse. Nobody knew exactly what had shifted in the last few days. Just that it had, and most of them prayed it would pass fast, because a rattled Alpha meant a rattled pack, and a rattled pack meant danger nobody wanted to name aloud. Whispers trailed him through the halls of the pack house, low and nervous, the kind that died the second he turned a corner, replaced by too-bright smiles and forced nods of respect.

POV: James

James didn't know what the hell was wrong with him. He just knew he couldn't scrub her out of his head no matter how hard he tried, no matter how many hours he buried himself in paperwork or drills or anything that might have offered an escape.

Trishelle's scent clung to him morning and night, until every other smell in the house started registering as wrong. Worse than wrong, actually. Rancid. The she-wolves who used to smell fine, normal, forgettable, now hit his nose like spoiled meat, enough to turn his stomach if he stood near them too long. He'd caught himself flinching away from women he'd known half his life, muttering some half-assed excuse before bolting to his office like a damn coward, hating himself a little more each time he did it.

The only thing that took the edge off was a hit of her scent. Which was exactly why he'd swiped one of her shirts off the laundry line days ago and locked it in his desk drawer like it was evidence in a crime, something he'd deny to his grave if anyone asked.

It's strategic, he told himself. Understanding the pull, that's useful information.

Bullshit. It was an addiction wearing a lab coat.

Days later and it hadn't faded one bit. If anything, it had gotten worse. What the hell is happening to me?

It felt like being tied to her with some invisible rope, one that cinched tighter every hour, no matter how hard he yanked against it. He'd tried reasoning with himself, tried reminding himself of every reason he had to stay away from her, and none of it made a difference. The rope only pulled tighter.

He leaned back in his chair and shut his eyes, rubbing his temple, which only made it worse. The second his eyes closed, she was there. Water sliding down her back. Dark curls plastered to wet skin, black instead of brown, like she'd been built specifically to catch moonlight. He remembered the curve of her shoulders, the shiver that rolled through her when the breeze hit bare skin, details his brain had apparently filed away without asking permission first. In the memory she turned, slow, and his breath snagged somewhere behind his ribs. He could almost feel the warmth radiating off her skin, could almost hear the soft catch of her breath, and it terrified him how real it all felt.

Was my eyesight always this good, or is this just what obsession does to a man?

A low groan crawled up his throat, caught somewhere between memory and something worse, something dangerously close to want. He pressed the heel of his hand against his eyes, as if he could physically push the image out, but it only sharpened, refusing to let go.

A pointed cough hauled him back into his body so fast it nearly gave him whiplash.

He opened his eyes to find Jack staring at him, arms crossed, one eyebrow cocked in a look somewhere between annoyed and pitying. Relief and irritation hit James at the same time, relief that someone had yanked him out of it, irritation that he'd needed yanking at all. His face heated, and he prayed to every god he knew that Jack hadn't noticed just how far gone he'd looked.

Get it together, man.

They were supposed to be talking pack business. His mind had wandered off again without asking, and it took him a second to notice he hadn't even thought of her as Trash this time. Somewhere in the last few days, without meaning to, he'd started calling her Trishelle in his head and never looked back. The realization sat wrong in his chest, foreign, unwelcome, like a truth he wasn't ready to swallow, one that unsettled him more than he cared to admit.

Real smooth. Acting like a lovesick pup instead of an Alpha.

He shook his head hard, like he could physically knock her loose, and forced his attention back to the meeting. Still, he felt Jack's eyes linger a beat too long, like his friend already knew exactly who had put that haunted look on his face. James cleared his throat, straightened in his chair, and prayed Jack would let it go, even as some traitorous part of him wondered if talking about it might actually help.

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Serving the Line

POV: Trishelle"Let me drop my stuff off first, then I'll give you a hand." Sammy grabbed the bag he'd tossed aside the second he'd spotted me, slinging it over his shoulder like it weighed nothing. We walked toward the house together, falling into step easy, the kind of easy that only came from years of knowing someone inside and out.True to his word, he threw himself into the last of the party prep, ending up behind the bar for most of it, mixing drinks with way more enthusiasm than skill. I knew this kitchen like the back of my hand, so I found myself helping serve food even though the whole thing was buffet style. Old habits died hard. I couldn't sit still while there was work to be done, and some small, restless part of me still felt like a guest in my own life whenever my hands weren't busy. The party was pushing two hours in when Sammy caught my hand and pulled me toward the food table, his grip warm and a little too insistent. He grabbed himself a plate and shoved one into my

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Growl

POV: JamesI let myself watch her for half a second, just her hair whipping behind her like she owned the damn wind. Then it hit me, that gut-punch feeling, when she blew right past me without even a glance. Not one. I'd been so sure she saw me. So sure tonight was going to be different. She saw me. She had to have seen me.I spun around and there she was, wrapped up tight in some guy's arms. Some guy I didn't know, didn't recognize, didn't like the smell of. Her face was tucked into the stranger's shoulder like she'd done it a hundred times before, like she belonged there.A growl ripped out of me before I could catch it. My claws pricked under my skin, sharp and hungry, and heat rolled through me, ugly and possessive and completely wrong for a crowd this size. Mine. The thought slammed through me hard and fast, animal and unreasonable. If a pack of kids hadn't picked that second to crash into my legs, screaming and laughing, high on cake and chaos, I might have done something stupid

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   The Ladder

POV: JamesI wanted to know exactly what the buzz about Trishelle was all about. Curiosity alone would've justified stepping outside. But that wasn't what had me on edge. It was my wolf, pacing restless circles in the back of my skull, growing louder and more insistent by the minute. The animal clawed at my composure in a way I hadn't felt in years, some primal thread pulled tight, refusing to slacken no matter how hard I tried to ignore it.I tried to push through the last of my paperwork, pen hovering over the same line for the tenth time, but the pacing wouldn't quit. Eventually I gave up pretending I could focus through it.Just going to check what the noise is about. Settle the wolf down. That's all this is.I repeated it like a promise I didn't quite believe.I headed for the backyard and found it transformed. Balloons bobbed in the breeze, lights strung through every tree in sight, the whole yard humming with energy my pack hadn't felt in longer than I cared to admit. Laughter

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Party Central

POV: The PackSaturday morning hit, and by the time the sun burned all the way into the sky, Richard's birthday prep was already a circus. Party started at dusk, which meant there was a shitload to do, and Richard had zero trouble rounding up a pack of single she-wolves eager to help. They showed up one after another, tossing out suggestions nobody asked for, dragging their feet on tasks that should've taken ten minutes tops. Every single one of them wanted him to look up and notice her.Normally he'd be tearing up some club or dive bar for his birthday, chasing loud music and strange bodies and a night that dissolved into blur by sunrise. Throwing the party at home instead had tongues wagging all over the pack. People whispered he was finally sick of the chase, maybe even ready to settle. Whether that was true or complete bullshit, it bought him serious goodwill with the females, who eyed him now like he was some kind of riddle worth cracking open.Let them wonder, he thought. Keeps

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Two Months of Restraint

POV: JamesTwo months since that conversation with Richard, and my brother had thrown himself into planning his own birthday party like it was some kind of holy war. Set for this weekend, and he'd gone at it with an intensity I didn't see coming, treating the whole thing less like a celebration and more like a mission with body counts. First request: everyone off duty for the night. Everyone except the wolves stuck on border patrol, because even Richard wasn't stupid enough to leave us exposed. Then he'd sorted the food out himself, quietly, specifically so Trishelle would be free to actually attend instead of working the damn thing like she always did. That detail didn't slip past me. It only made the itch under my skin worse, that gut feeling that something bigger was coiled up underneath all his scheming. What exactly are you planning, Rowdy Ricky?I'd asked more than once how any of this was supposed to fix things with Trishelle. Richard's answer never changed, delivered with that

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Under the Crescent Moon Again

POV: JamesI stormed off the training field, furious. Furious at Richard, furious at Henry for that look he'd given me, but underneath all of it, furious mostly at myself.I shouldn't have followed her last night. I knew it walking down there.Another crescent moon had come and gone, and despite every rational argument I'd made to myself, I'd trailed after Trishelle to the lake again anyway. I'd told myself I wouldn't. I'd told myself the same damn thing the night before that, and the night before that, and every time my feet carried me down the same worn path regardless.Real strong willpower you've got there, man.Even having already seen her like that once, the sight still hit me like the first time, like something had reached into my chest and wrung it out slow.Something about her had changed, though. I wasn't sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but she didn't look nearly as thin as before. Her hips had filled out, softer now, her stomach no longer hollow. Even her cheeks
