The Goldmoon Letter

last update 게시일: 2026-08-07 17:37:00

POV: James

The last piece of shit on my desk was an official letter. I picked it up, scanned the words while Jack stood there with his arms crossed, already knowing what was coming like he'd fucking written it himself.

Some pack was moving onto the land bordering ours. Usually not a problem. The forest out here was big enough to swallow a dozen packs without anyone getting territorial. But any relocation outside wartime needed the Werewolf Council's blessing first.

The Council was eight retired Alphas, one for each continent, each with enough reputation to make their word damn near law. Once they approved, the moving pack got a deadline to meet every requirement for staking their new territory, then two Council members had to sign off on it. Neighboring packs got notice, and tradition demanded the new Alpha visit every bordering pack within three months to introduce themselves.

Sometimes you made an ally that way. Sometimes an enemy. And every so often, somebody found their mate.

"Goldmoon," I said, tasting the name. "That's a lot of territory for a pack nobody's ever heard of."

"No history I could find," Jack said. "Doesn't mean shit though. Plenty of packs stay quiet until they need to make some noise."

I rubbed my chin, already texting my Gamma and Delta to dig up everything they could on this Goldmoon pack. Friend or foe, I wanted answers before their Alpha set foot on my land. Not paranoia. Just the kind of caution a man picked up after years of watching unfamiliar names on official letters turn into problems.

I looked at the letter again, and my eyes caught on the Alpha's name printed at the bottom. Something about it scratched at my memory, familiar in a way I couldn't place, like a word stuck on the tip of my tongue.

If Trishelle would stop showing up in my head completely naked, maybe I could actually think straight long enough to figure out where I know that name from.

I sighed and pressed my fingers against my temple, the start of a headache already crawling in.

There I go again. Why can't I get that Omega out of my skull?

Deciding my brain had officially checked out for the day, I waved a hand at Jack to signal the meeting was over. Jack gathered his papers and stood, but he lingered a beat too long, like he was chewing on whether to say something else.

POV: Jack

I stopped at the door, hand on the frame, and looked back at my friend and Alpha. I didn't like what I saw.

Red-rimmed eyes. Dark circles that hadn't been there a week ago. A grayish paleness under James's skin that talked about missed sleep stacking up night after night. He'd lost weight too, which tracked, since lately James picked at every plate set in front of him like it had personally offended him. I'd noticed it days ago and hadn't found the right moment to bring it up. Now the worry sat heavier in my chest, the kind that didn't shake loose with a joke or a shrug.

He even stopped letting Trishelle serve him. Has somebody else do it instead now.

I turned that thought over, slow. Coincidence, or was she tangled up in whatever had James looking one bad night away from falling apart? I thought of the girl, quiet, easy to overlook, always working twice as hard as anybody asked her to, and couldn't picture her hurting the Alpha on purpose. Still, the timing needled at me.

Is she slipping something into his food? Should I look into that?

I held in the doorway a beat too long, and James caught it.

"Jack. Something else?"

"No, Alpha." I hesitated anyway, weighing the words before I let them go. "But if something's eating at you, I'm here. We've been best friends since before we could crawl. You can talk to me. Whatever it is."

James's face did something complicated, gratitude and exhaustion knotted together, and for a second I thought he might actually spill it. Then the moment passed, and James only managed a tired smile.

"Okay, my friend. Thanks."

I nodded and let myself out, shutting the door quiet behind me. I stood in the hallway a second, chewing on my own helplessness, before heading off to find something useful to do with it.

Great. Now even my best friend knows something's wrong with me.

POV: James

Alone again, I pressed my fingers to my temple, trying to work loose the pounding that had taken up permanent residence behind my eyes, a pounding that matched the ache lower down that never seemed to fully let up these days. Just the thought of her had me hard as a rock, and since she seemed to camp out in every waking thought lately, that left me in a pretty constant state of misery.

Why not just take what I want? What's actually stopping me?

If it had been any other she-wolf who'd hooked me this hard, I'd have scratched the itch days ago and moved on without a second thought. The fact that the question kept circling back with no answer was exactly why it hurt so much. I hated how little sense any of it made. Hated more that my body had opinions my mind flat out refused to agree with.

Rubbing my head isn't doing a damn thing. Might as well try somewhere else.

I checked that my door was locked, let the memory that had been circling all day take over, and gave my imagination room to run.

What came next wasn't something I'd ever admit to, least of all to Jack. It ended, eventually, the way these things did, leaving me wrung out and no closer to understanding why my own body had decided one specific Omega was the only cure for whatever had taken root in me.

My heart slowed. I blew out a long breath and stared at the ceiling, disgusted with myself in a distant, worn-down sort of way. The silence of the office pressed in around me, making the whole thing feel even more pathetic than it already had.

Maybe I need to broaden my horizons.

A distraction. That was the call here. I showered, got dressed, grabbed my keys, and decided I was done sitting in this office chasing my own tail over an Omega who wasn't even supposed to be on my radar. The drive alone might clear my head, I told myself, even as some quieter part of me doubted it.

If the she-wolves in this pack aren't doing it for me anymore, maybe a pretty human girl will.

Deciding to go solo, I pointed my car toward one of the hottest clubs two towns over, telling myself the whole drive that once I finally got some action, things would settle back to normal.

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Serving the Line

POV: Trishelle"Let me drop my stuff off first, then I'll give you a hand." Sammy grabbed the bag he'd tossed aside the second he'd spotted me, slinging it over his shoulder like it weighed nothing. We walked toward the house together, falling into step easy, the kind of easy that only came from years of knowing someone inside and out.True to his word, he threw himself into the last of the party prep, ending up behind the bar for most of it, mixing drinks with way more enthusiasm than skill. I knew this kitchen like the back of my hand, so I found myself helping serve food even though the whole thing was buffet style. Old habits died hard. I couldn't sit still while there was work to be done, and some small, restless part of me still felt like a guest in my own life whenever my hands weren't busy. The party was pushing two hours in when Sammy caught my hand and pulled me toward the food table, his grip warm and a little too insistent. He grabbed himself a plate and shoved one into my

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Growl

POV: JamesI let myself watch her for half a second, just her hair whipping behind her like she owned the damn wind. Then it hit me, that gut-punch feeling, when she blew right past me without even a glance. Not one. I'd been so sure she saw me. So sure tonight was going to be different. She saw me. She had to have seen me.I spun around and there she was, wrapped up tight in some guy's arms. Some guy I didn't know, didn't recognize, didn't like the smell of. Her face was tucked into the stranger's shoulder like she'd done it a hundred times before, like she belonged there.A growl ripped out of me before I could catch it. My claws pricked under my skin, sharp and hungry, and heat rolled through me, ugly and possessive and completely wrong for a crowd this size. Mine. The thought slammed through me hard and fast, animal and unreasonable. If a pack of kids hadn't picked that second to crash into my legs, screaming and laughing, high on cake and chaos, I might have done something stupid

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   The Ladder

POV: JamesI wanted to know exactly what the buzz about Trishelle was all about. Curiosity alone would've justified stepping outside. But that wasn't what had me on edge. It was my wolf, pacing restless circles in the back of my skull, growing louder and more insistent by the minute. The animal clawed at my composure in a way I hadn't felt in years, some primal thread pulled tight, refusing to slacken no matter how hard I tried to ignore it.I tried to push through the last of my paperwork, pen hovering over the same line for the tenth time, but the pacing wouldn't quit. Eventually I gave up pretending I could focus through it.Just going to check what the noise is about. Settle the wolf down. That's all this is.I repeated it like a promise I didn't quite believe.I headed for the backyard and found it transformed. Balloons bobbed in the breeze, lights strung through every tree in sight, the whole yard humming with energy my pack hadn't felt in longer than I cared to admit. Laughter

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Party Central

POV: The PackSaturday morning hit, and by the time the sun burned all the way into the sky, Richard's birthday prep was already a circus. Party started at dusk, which meant there was a shitload to do, and Richard had zero trouble rounding up a pack of single she-wolves eager to help. They showed up one after another, tossing out suggestions nobody asked for, dragging their feet on tasks that should've taken ten minutes tops. Every single one of them wanted him to look up and notice her.Normally he'd be tearing up some club or dive bar for his birthday, chasing loud music and strange bodies and a night that dissolved into blur by sunrise. Throwing the party at home instead had tongues wagging all over the pack. People whispered he was finally sick of the chase, maybe even ready to settle. Whether that was true or complete bullshit, it bought him serious goodwill with the females, who eyed him now like he was some kind of riddle worth cracking open.Let them wonder, he thought. Keeps

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Two Months of Restraint

POV: JamesTwo months since that conversation with Richard, and my brother had thrown himself into planning his own birthday party like it was some kind of holy war. Set for this weekend, and he'd gone at it with an intensity I didn't see coming, treating the whole thing less like a celebration and more like a mission with body counts. First request: everyone off duty for the night. Everyone except the wolves stuck on border patrol, because even Richard wasn't stupid enough to leave us exposed. Then he'd sorted the food out himself, quietly, specifically so Trishelle would be free to actually attend instead of working the damn thing like she always did. That detail didn't slip past me. It only made the itch under my skin worse, that gut feeling that something bigger was coiled up underneath all his scheming. What exactly are you planning, Rowdy Ricky?I'd asked more than once how any of this was supposed to fix things with Trishelle. Richard's answer never changed, delivered with that

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Under the Crescent Moon Again

POV: JamesI stormed off the training field, furious. Furious at Richard, furious at Henry for that look he'd given me, but underneath all of it, furious mostly at myself.I shouldn't have followed her last night. I knew it walking down there.Another crescent moon had come and gone, and despite every rational argument I'd made to myself, I'd trailed after Trishelle to the lake again anyway. I'd told myself I wouldn't. I'd told myself the same damn thing the night before that, and the night before that, and every time my feet carried me down the same worn path regardless.Real strong willpower you've got there, man.Even having already seen her like that once, the sight still hit me like the first time, like something had reached into my chest and wrung it out slow.Something about her had changed, though. I wasn't sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but she didn't look nearly as thin as before. Her hips had filled out, softer now, her stomach no longer hollow. Even her cheeks
