RAVEN'S POV

Luna Vera cornered me at breakfast on Monday morning with news I didn't want to hear.

"You need to attend the Alpha Heir classes starting today," she said while pouring herself coffee.

I almost choked on my toast. "What? Why?"

"Because you're still part of this family,” she said.

“It would look strange if you didn't attend."

"But I'm not an heir,” I said. “I'm adopted."

"That doesn't matter,” she said. “Everyone from high-ranking families attends these classes. It's tradition."

The look on her face told me arguing wouldn't matter. When Luna Vera made up her mind about something, there was no changing it.

"Fine,” I said. “When do they start?"

"Today after school in the main hall,” she said. “Don't be late."

I spent the rest of breakfast dreading it. Alpha Heir classes were for people like Dante and Luella. People who actually mattered in the pack. I didn't belong there and everyone knew it.

School dragged on forever. I couldn't focus because I kept thinking abo

Raven's POV Monday morning started with Alaric waiting at my locker before school even officially started. He had that determined look on his face that usually meant he was about to do something I wouldn't like. "What are you planning?" I asked. "Nothing you need to worry about," he said. "Just trust me." "That's not an answer," I said. "I know," he said. "But it's all I'm giving you right now." During lunch, I heard raised voices outside the library. I got up to look and saw Alaric in the hallway with Laura, Lana, and three other girls who were always with Luella. "I'm only going to say this once," Alaric said loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. "Stop spreading lies about Raven. Stop making up complaints, stop harassing her." "We're not doing anything," Laura said, but she looked nervous. "Yes, you are," Alaric said. "And it stops now. Because if I find out any of you are still messing with her, there will be consequences." "What kind of consequences?" Lana asked,

Raven's POV Friday morning, I was called to the principal's office during the second period. My stomach dropped because I knew this couldn't be good. I hadn't done anything wrong, but that didn't seem to matter lately. Principal Hayes was sitting at his desk with a serious expression. Luella was there too, sitting in one of the chairs with her perfect posture and fake concerned face. "Miss Valkhor, please sit down," he said. I sat in the chair farthest from Luella. "What's this about?" "Miss Ebonis has brought some concerns to my attention," he said. "Regarding your behavior at school." "What behavior?" I asked. "According to multiple students, you've been disruptive in class," he said. "Sleeping at your desk, missing assignments, causing distractions." "I fell asleep once in history because I was sick," I said. "And I haven't missed any assignments." "That's not what your teachers are reporting," he said pulling out a folder. "Mrs. Davies says you've been consistently late

Raven's POV After training one morning, I couldn't go back to the castle right away because my chest felt tight, I couldn't breathe right, and everything was just too much. I sat down under a tree and put my head in my hands. “Raven?” Alaric came over and crouched down next to me. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing, I’m fine.” “You’re not fine. Talk to me.” I shook my head because if I started talking, I would start crying. I didn’t want to cry in front of him again, but the words came out anyway. “I’m scared.” “Scared of what?” “Everything.” I looked up at him and felt tears running down my face. “I’m scared someone is going to kill me before this baby is born. I’m scared that even if I survive, the baby won’t. I’m scared that I’m all alone and nobody really cares what happens to me.” Alaric sat down next to me and didn’t say anything for a minute. I thought maybe I had said too much and made things weird, but then he put his arm around my shoulders. “You’re not alone,” he said qu

Raven's POV I woke up early before the sun came up because I couldn't sleep anymore and I was tired of feeling weak and helpless and waiting for someone to try to kill me again. Breeze was already awake and sitting by the window, and when she saw me get up, she made a small sound and tilted her head. "I need to learn how to fight," I told her. She jumped down from the window, came over to me, and nodded like she understood exactly what I meant, and that's when I realized she had been waiting for me to figure this out. "Can you help me?" Breeze made a sound that seemed like yes and led me out of my room, through the castle, and outside to a clearing in the woods where nobody would see us, and the sun was just starting to come up. "Okay, so what do I do?" I asked. Breeze started moving around me in circles. She would dart forward and back, and I realized she was showing me how to move, watch for attacks, and react fast. I tried to copy what she was doing, but I felt slow, and m

Raven's POV I was walking down the corridor toward the main staircase when Breeze suddenly appeared next to me and started pulling on my sleeve and making worried sounds. "What's wrong?" I asked her. She kept tugging harder and pointing back the way we came, but I didn't understand what she was trying to tell me, and I had to get downstairs for the council meeting or I would be late. "Breeze, I have to go." She made a sharp noise and grabbed my arm with both hands, and her eyes looked scared. That's when I realized something was wrong. Two men came around the corner ahead of me, and I recognized them from Dante's group of friends. They smiled at me, but it wasn't a nice smile, and my stomach dropped. "Hello Raven," the tall one said. "I need to get past you." "Do you?" The shorter one moved to block more of the hallway. Breeze pulled harder on my sleeve, and I started backing up slowly because something felt wrong about this whole thing, and every part of me was screaming t

I couldn't sleep again, so I went to the library because nobody ever went there at night, and I needed to be alone with my thoughts. I was tired of pretending everything was normal when it wasn't. I sat down in one of the chairs by the window, put my head in my hands, and tried not to cry because crying wouldn't fix anything, but the tears came anyway. "Raven?" I looked up and wiped my face. Alaric stood in the doorway with a confused look on his face, and I wanted to disappear. "What are you doing here?" I asked. "I couldn't sleep either." He walked over and sat in the chair across from me. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine." "You're crying." "I said I'm fine." He leaned forward and looked at me, and I could tell he didn't believe me at all. "Talk to me." "Why would I talk to you?" "Because you look like you need someone to talk to, and I'm here." He crossed his arms, but his voice stayed soft. "What's going on?" I stared at him for a long time and tried to figure out if I could
