“Good evening,”

The words left my lips, and silence shattered the hall. I watched as a woman lost her grip on her glass of champagne, the crystal tumbling from her hand to the floor. The sharp crack of breaking glass echoed like a warning bell, the only sound that dared exist in the room.

My eyes roamed the sea of faces, each one twisted with disbelief. The mother of the Pierny family nearly collapsed, her body buckling until her husband caught her trembling shoulders. His hand shook violently, as though he were trying to steady not only her but his own terror. Even from where I stood, I could hear the pounding of their hearts, loud and frantic, as if each beat begged me for mercy.
