Chapter 2

I got home from the festival still shaking, the rejection burning in my chest like it was fresh. Mom and Dad were in the living room, already talking about it like it was some pack gossip they heard on the street. I walked in and dropped onto the couch, words spilling out before I could even sit properly. They must’ve heard the news already.

“I want to move away,” I said. “Tonight if I can. I can’t stay here after what Zayne did to me in front of everyone. I just can’t.”

Mom looked up from her phone, eyebrows raised high. “Maeve, honey, don’t be dramatic about it. Your sister is going to be Luna now. At least one of our kids made it big in the pack.”

Dad nodded along, sipping his coffee slow. “Yeah, Mia’s always been the strong one. This could be good for the family. You starting somewhere else might not be the worst idea though. New town, new chances for you.”

I stared at them, my mouth open like an idiot. My own parents acting like this was normal. “Mia? She’s my twin sister and she’s hated me forever. You both know that. Everyone knows it. She bullied me growing up, made fun of my body in front of the whole class every single day. It was fun for her and all her classmates watching me cry in the corner. Now she does it online as a pro, disguises it like sister jokes and gains all those views and likes. I didn’t think she’d actually take my mate away. My mate. The one the Goddess picked.”

Mom sighed long and shrugged like it was nothing important. “Sisters fight, Maeve. She’s ambitious. You have your nursing job. Maybe this is the push you need to get out there and do something.”

Dad cut in right after her, talking fast. “At least Mia will be Luna. The pack will respect that connection to the Alpha family. You going off somewhere new sounds smart. Fresh start and all that. Why stick around for more drama?”

My heart broke right there in the middle of their living room. They weren’t even bothered. Not really. Not for me. It felt like a slap on top of the one Zayne already gave.

“You two are unbelievable,” I said, voice cracking as I stood up. “She destroyed me out there, called me out on my curves, my body, said I was too heavy to even lift, and you’re sitting here happy one of us got picked. Like it doesn’t matter that my own twin took the guy the Goddess chose for me. How can you say that?”

They started talking at the same time, voices overlapping. Mom said, “We’re not happy exactly,” while Dad jumped in louder, “Life isn’t fair, kid. What do you want us to do about it? Pack your bag if you want to leave.”

Mom added quickly , “Mia’s always been better at these things. You knew that growing up. She gets the spotlight.”

I threw my hands up, annoyed and hurt all mixed together in a messy ball inside me. “Fine. I’ll pack a small bag right now. I’m taking the car and my cat. I’m accepting that sports medicine position in the other city. Tonight. I can’t do this anymore with any of you.”

I went to my room and threw clothes into a bag, hands moving quick and angry, shoving shirts and pants without folding. My cat, Whiskers, watched from the bed like he knew something was up and the world was ending. I scooped him up and held him close for a second, burying my face in his fur. “At least you don’t judge my curves, buddy. You don’t think I’m too much to lift or too heavy for a real man.”

The drive started okay but my mind wouldn’t shut up the whole way. Why did I even let myself think about driving off some cliff for a second? No way.

Screw that idea completely. My curves were worth more than Zayne’s stupid opinion. Someday someone would see them and actually like them. Appreciate the whole me, thick thighs, heavy breasts and all the parts he mocked. I gripped the wheel tighter, whispering to myself between turns on the dark road. “You’re not worthless. Not to everyone. Just to them and their perfect little pack standards.”

The mountain highway got bad fast. Snow came down heavy and thick, sticking to the windshield. A blizzard hit out of nowhere, wind howling against the car. Cars slowed way down, then stopped completely ahead of me in a long line. Red lights flashed everywhere through the whiteout. Police officers were waving people off the road with flashlights.

“Road’s closed up ahead,” one officer yelled when I rolled down my window, snow blowing right in my face. “Blizzard’s too strong to keep going. Head to the old ski lodge up the pass. It’s the only shelter tonight. Keep moving slow and stay safe.”

I followed the line of cars, Whiskers meowing loudly in his carrier beside me like he was complaining about the whole mess and the cold. By the time I pulled up to the lodge, I was soaked from running through the wind and snow to get inside from the parking area.

My emerald dress from the festival was still underneath my coat, wet and clinging uncomfortable to my skin in all the wrong places. I pushed the heavy door open, bag slung over my shoulder, cat carrier in my other hand, dripping everywhere.

The place was crowded. People everywhere, shaking off snow, talking loud over each other about the storm and the festival drama from earlier. The big fireplace had bodies packed tight around it, warming up and sharing stories about the night.

Only one empty chair remained near the fire, tucked in the corner. I headed straight for it, dripping water on the wooden floor with every step, not caring who saw.

I sat down fast, trying to catch my breath and stop my teeth from chattering. Across from me sat Rowan Ashcroft. Captain of the Ice Wolves. The kingdom’s favorite hockey superstar.

The Alpha family’s black sheep who never followed the rules and stayed away from pack politics. He looked up from his spot and recognized me right away. Not because I was famous or anything special. Because he had watched his cousin destroy me at the festival earlier that night.

He didn’t say anything at first. Just reached for a mug of hot chocolate from the tray beside him and slid it quietly across the small table toward me, his eyes steady on mine the whole time.

“I figured tonight has been awful enough,” he said, voice low and steady like he meant it.

I took the mug, fingers wrapping around the warm ceramic. The simple kindness after everything hit me hard. My eyes stung bad and I almost cried right there in front of him, but I bit my lip and held it back for now.

I need you to shut up and not be gentle about the wrong things.”She listened to that, at least. The pace changed. Not frantic. Just honest. I moved with her because my body had stopped asking my pride for permission. The jeans cut into the back of my knees. The faucet dug into my palm. Her taped arm hovered in the air like a warning she refused to put down. I came like that, ugly and quiet, face in her neck, eyes still open, staring at the chipped paint on the wall behind her head so I would not give the feeling a name.I shook through it and hated how long it lasted. She eased her hand out and I grabbed her wrist without thinking and then let go because that was her cut side and I had almost wrecked the tape I had just put on.“Sorry.”“Stop

Chapter 85 Mia Sloane’s eyes did not soften. “We are not sleeping together.”“Okay.”“You keep saying okay like it is a door you can shut.”“It is a door I can shut.”“Then shut it and go sit on the couch.”I should have. I know that. I can see the second I should have turned around and left the light and the tank top and the ugly cut and the woman who had no right to be this close to a night that already had Zayne in it. I did not turn around.I kissed her.It was short. It was angry. It was my mouth on her mouth because I needed the night to belong to me for one stupid second and I did not have another way to take it back. Her lips were dry. She tasted like tap water and smoke she had not lit in front of me. I pulled off almost as fast as I landed.Sloane’s good hand came up and stopped in the air near my shoulder, not quite on me.“You asked me to say it,” she said.“I know.”“Then what was that.”“I don’t know.”“That is a bad answer.”“It is the only one I have.”She looked at

Chapter 84 Mia She stood in the doorway with the key still in her hand and looked at me like I had asked her to recite a prayer she did not believe in.“We are not sleeping together,” she said. Flat. Tired. No pause to make it soft. “You can have the couch. I am going to wash this cut and pass out. That is the entire itinerary.”I waited for the rest. There was no rest.“Say it again.”“I just did.”“Say the first part again.”Sloane’s mouth tightened. “We are not sleeping together. Couch. Cut. Sleep. I am out of ways to say the same three things.”My hands were still in my jacket pockets. I could feel my phone in there, dead and useless, and I could feel the heat in my cheek where Zayne’s hand had been, and I could feel how stupid I sounded asking a stranger to repeat herself on a landing that smelled like old brick and somebody else’s dinner.“Okay,” I said.“Okay.”She pushed the door wider with her good shoulder and went in first. I followed because standing outside felt worse.

Chapter 83 Mia She took a turn without using the signal until the last second. “Because you said you wanted to go home and then you sat there like home was not a place you could walk into. Because your phone is dying. Because it is late. That is the whole list.”“That is a long list for someone who said she was not giving a speech.”“That was not a speech. That was an answer. You asked.”I shut my mouth. Then I opened it again because sitting quiet made the slap louder.“I have a boyfriend,” I said.“You mentioned.”“I am not staying with you.”“You are getting a couch until the sun is up or until you decide the street looks better. After that you can go back to the boyfriend. I do not care.”The way she said boyfriend made my teeth hurt. Like it was a word she did not respect and did not need to.“His name is Zayne.”“I did not ask for his name.”“I know you didn’t. I said it anyway.”“Okay.”“He is probably looking for me.”Sloane glanced at the rearview once. “Then we should not

Chapter 82 Mia The smile did not last. It sat there for a second and then the bartender knocked on the doorframe like he was done being nice about it.“I need you two out,” he said. He had a trash bag in one hand and that same tired look from earlier. “Cops might swing back. I don’t want this turning into a second show. Take the kit if you want. Just go.”I did not know her name yet. She closed the first aid kit with one hand and stood up like her arm was not wrapped in gauze that was already spotting red.“We’re going,” she said.My phone lit up in my pocket and I pulled it out. Eight percent. Then seven. Zayne’s name sat at the top of the missed list like it belonged there. I locked the screen so I would not have to look at it.“Your phone is dying,” she said.“I know.”“You have somewhere to go?”I almost laughed. The sound came out wrong. “Do I look like I have somewhere to go?”She did not answer that. She looked at my face instead, at the mark Zayne left, and then she looked a

Chapter 81 Mia The creep's hand was still on me. His fingers dug into my jeans like he owned the right to touch whatever he wanted. I should have moved. I should have slapped his hand away or screamed or done something. But my body would not listen to my brain. I just sat there on that stool with my drink in front of me and my cheek throbbing and my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat."I asked you a question, sweetheart," he said. His breath was hot and wet against my ear. "You want some company or not?"I opened my mouth to tell him no. To tell him to get lost. But nothing came out. Just air. Just silence. Just me being pathetic and frozen while some drunk old man touched me like I was a piece of meat he found at the grocery store. He squeezed harder. I flinched."Come on now," he said. "Don't be shy. I saw you sitting here all alone. A pretty thing like you shouldn't be by herself at this hour. Let me take care of you.""I said get your hand off me." My voice came
