Bam!

The iron door of the cellar was forcefully pried open by the special police force.

A terrible stench hit everyone.

A curled up shadow was trembling in a corner.

It was a girl.

Her hair was all tangled up, and her clothes were torn to shreds. There were even rusted chains meant for dogs hanging on her neck.

When the harsh light from outside shone in through the open door, she growled like a beast.

The captain leading the police squad inhaled sharply.

“Goodness! Lawson, I’m afraid this child has lost all her awareness as a human being.”

In my last lifetime, my heart broke at the scene before me. I jumped into the cellar without any hesitation, took off my jacket, and wrapped it around her.

She bit my forearm so hard, she took a piece of flesh with her.

I bore with the pain and refused to let go. I comforted her with gentle words and, step by careful step, carried her out of that hellhole.

I slowly became the only person she trusted.

She always wanted me standing at the door while she bathed, and always gripped a corner of my shirt while she slept.

I thought she had developed post-traumatic dependence on me.

Five years later, she became the heiress of the Callisto family and slandered me in the media. I had no way of clearing my name.

The memory made my stomach churn.

The girl slowly got used to the light filtering into the cellar. She looked up at me standing at the entrance.

A strange glint broke through the dazed look in her eyes. In the blink of an eye, she was on all fours, scrambling up the stairs wildly.

“Watch out!” the captain yelled.

She climbed out of the cellar and pounced straight at me.

Just like in my past lifetime, she wanted to wrap her arms around my leg and rub her cheek against my trousers.

I looked coldly at her as I took three huge steps back.

“Stay away from me.”

She stood stunned, and so did the other policemen around us.

The old bachelor David Lynch, who bought the girl and was handcuffed to the side, immediately cried, “How could you so-called experts from the city be so heartless? Refusing to rescue a pitiful girl like her!”

The girl sprawled on the muddy water and stared hard at me. Suddenly, she opened her mouth and let out a piercing wail.

She tugged at her already torn and tattered clothes, exposing her shoulder.

The captain looked at me with a frown.

“Professor Lawson, what are you doing? She’s clearly traumatized and distressed. As a professional psychologist, you should be comforting her.”

I looked expressionlessly at the girl.

Others might not be able to tell, but I was a top profiler in my field.

I could see it as clear as day. There was no fear whatsoever in her eyes, only tentative probing.

What startled me even more was the targeted aggressiveness hidden in her eyes as she looked at me, which made the hair on my arms stand on end.

I switched on the body cam hanging at my chest and said in a cold, piercing voice, “Firstly, I'm a psychologist and profiler, not a nanny.

“Secondly, the victim is female and isn't properly dressed. According to procedures for handling cases, men should stay away.”

I turned to look at the captain.

“Captain Jones, I would like to call for two female colleagues to help control this situation. They should also come prepared with restraint straps.”

The captain was taken aback by my businesslike approach and asked hesitatingly, “Restraint straps? That wouldn’t be necessary, would it? She’s just a girl.”

I pointed at David.

“Just ask him. Did she bite off the finger of the woman from the west end of the village, who tried to draw near to her just last month?”

The look on David’s face changed. Meanwhile, the girl kept mum.

The captain immediately said with a wave of his hand, “Ladies! Prepare restraint straps!”

Two female cops armed to the teeth stepped forward and bound the girl up using restraint straps.

The girl struggled with all her might. Her gaze pierced through the crowd and landed straight on me. She stretched her hands out to me, a ragged, raspy voice coming from her throat.

“Hug… Hug…”

Some of the younger policemen standing by the side, who were more tender-hearted, started having tears in their eyes.

“Captain, this girl usually doesn’t care about anyone. She likes this expert and thinks he's friendly!” David yelled excitedly.

I sneered.

Likes me?

Why would a feral wolf child isolated from this world and an old bachelor have their eyes on me right away?

Why did she betray me in my past lifetime?

“Send her to the county hospital. Call for a tripartite joint consultation between the Women’s Federation, the Center for Protection of Minors, and the psychiatric hospital.”

The captain stood stunned. “The psychiatric hospital?”

I stared at the bitter, resentful look in the girl’s eyes.

“Yes. She exhibits a high level of antisocial personality traits and aggressive nature. Before we have a thorough psychiatric evaluation report on her, no one is to come into contact with her in private.”

At the mention of the psychiatric hospital, the girl stopped struggling at once.

“You said you left no evidence behind?”I tapped on the official red seal on the report.“Ten years ago, you lured your younger brother to the back of the mountain and strangled him to death with a nylon rope.“You stuffed his body in a tin box and buried it. You then took some money and paid an old bachelor in the village, David Lynch, to act as a human trafficker and abduct you.“To make it look real, you let him chain you up in the cellar with metal chains.“You thought that as long as you stayed in the cellar for ten years, when the prosecution period came to an end and when everyone had given up on searching for the truth, you’d be able to return home to the Callistos in all glory and honor as the victim of an abduction case. You would then be the sole heir of the family assets.”I looked at Rosalind’s face, which was getting paler by the minute.“Your plan was perfect. You even considered the fact that after ten years of oxidation, the body in the tin box would decompose s

At five o’clock in the morning, the door to the isolated ward in the county hospital was kicked open. A few policemen from the special forces and I strode into the ward.Rosalind was seated on the bed, holding a phone from somewhere. When she saw me, her hand shook, and the phone dropped on the blanket.Outside the door, Timothy and his wife tried to rush in, but they were held back by the police.“Chester Lawson! What do you want? What right do you have to barge into my daughter’s ward?” Timothy yelled furiously in the corridor.I ignored him and headed straight to the bed.Rosalind looked right at me, her disguise slowly melting away. She was no longer pretending to stutter or tremble. She leaned against the headboard of the bed, glaring at me with a look of vicious resentment.“Chester Lawson, why must you be so relentless?”Her voice was crisp and clear, betraying a viciousness that didn’t seem appropriate for her age.I switched on the recording device and looked down at

Ten minutes later, the official Green County account posted a two-minute-long unedited HD video. The video was footage I captured with the police body cam last night at the entrance of the reception area.A single line of text accompanied the video.[Under Investigation.]The moment this video was posted, there was a complete change in public opinion online. The netizens who were insulting me at the start didn't see it coming.“What? The girl tore her own clothes? What kind of nasty trap was that?”“Where are all those people whose hearts broke for her? Why not come out for a spin now?”“I knew it! That young man looked so upright, so how could he be capable of something like that? Well done! This recording is a real lifesaver.”The tide changed faster than I had expected. The marketing accounts that had accepted the money immediately began taking down their posts. Stock prices of companies under the Callistos’ name crashed overnight in overseas markets.I sat in my office,

“Behind the mountain? A tree?”The look on Captain Jones’ face changed. He grabbed the microphone immediately.“Teams one and two, gather our K-9s and exploration equipment and lockdown the back of the mountain!”I stared at David through the mirror. He looked like a deflated balloon after saying all that, slumping in his chair and not moving a muscle. In fact, his eyes were gradually shutting. This was extremely abnormal behavior. He wasn’t seeking leniency by confessing. He was completing a mission someone had assigned him.“David Lynch,” I said coldly into the microphone. “Rosalind is making you lead us to the back of the mountain, right?”David’s body trembled, but he didn’t open his eyes or refute my claim. The clues I had gathered started coming together in my mind.Rosalind was enjoying premium wagyu while pretending to be a beast all chained up.David Lynch, despite being an illiterate old bachelor, could somehow accurately and precisely execute such a complex and in

Pin-drop silence enveloped the corridor.Timothy grabbed the lab test report, his fingers trembling.“What…what does this mean?”I looked at Rosalind shrinking silently into her blanket.“It means, the great Ms. Callisto has been enjoying meals much better than ours over the past few months.”I turned to look at Captain Jones.“Captain Jones, I suspect this isn’t just a simple case of abduction and trafficking. Perpetrator David Lynch is suspected of giving false testimony, while victim Rosalind Callisto is suspected of withholding major case details. I appeal to impose exit restrictions and mandatory detention measures on Rosalind Callisto. No one is allowed to bring her out of Green County.”Rosalind snapped her head up, the piteous look in her eyes all but gone. She bit her lip hard, a look of wild hatred flashing past her eyes. The look on Timothy’s face changed. Finally, he took a deep breath and regained his composure as a business magnate.“Mr. Lawson, a lab test report

Along the corridor, tension was thick in the air.Timothy Callisto, the richest man in the city, strode over with an entourage of bodyguards behind him. He immediately spotted Rosalind seated on the floor, her clothes in tatters.“Darling!” Mrs. Callisto shrieked. She leaped over and hugged her daughter tight, sobbing her heart out.Timothy’s eyes reddened with emotion. He turned to glare at me.“Are you the psychology expert from the county department? My daughter was taken away from me for ten years and suffered immense torture, but you forced her to remain in this corridor in the middle of the night. You caused her to end up this way!”He pointed at my nose.“Seize him! I’m going to make him wish he were dead!” he bellowed. His bodyguards pounced toward me.Captain Jones and a few other policemen pulled out their batons and stood before me.“Mr. Callisto! We’re at a police station right now!”Timothy sneered. “What? Is the police intending to condone the actions of a rapi
