Clara's POV

I read those sentences twice.

Then I put the draft down on the table and looked at the garden through the window.

Arrived.

I sat with the word for a while.

Not finished. Arrived. There was a difference that mattered enormously. Finished suggested you had reached the end of something. Arrived suggested you had reached a place you could stand in and build from.

I thought about what had been built from this place.

Rosa ran the foundation into its next decade. Seven hundred women a mont

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   The Constant Hills

Clara's POVEdmund was eleven when he stood at the hills for the first time with intention. Not for the first time physically. He had been coming here since he was born. But there was a morning when I watched him walk to the wall alone, without anyone telling him to, without any particular occasion, and put both hands on the stone and look at the hills with the specific quality of someone doing something they understand.Eleanor was behind me in the library. I was in the doorway between the library and the garden and I watched Edmund at the wall.He stayed there for five minutes. Then he came back.He saw me watching.“The hills are the same," he said.“Yes," I said.“Every time we come," he said. "The hills are the same. I have been documenting them for three years now. Geologically they are changing but too slowly to observe in three years. To observation they are the same."“Yes," I said."That is useful," he said. "When a lot of other things are changing."He had been at a new sch

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   Letters and Promises

Clara's POVI wrote a second letter to my mother. Not because the first one was insufficient. Because more had happened since I wrote it and I had more to say.I sat at the desk in the study at the family home on a winter morning and wrote.I told her about Eleanor naming her work. About Edmund and his papers. About Ellie, who had her great-grandmother's quality of attention. About Cassie's strength. About Luke's bridges. About Adrian's bridges. About the two people building bridges independently and beginning to consult each other, the first conversations between a qualified structural engineer and an advisory council member that would eventually become something formal.I told her about Silas reading in the library. About the specific quality of a man who had learned to be still after a life of motion, not because the motion was finished but because the stillness was now something he chose rather than something that eluded him.I told her that the foundation was in Rosa's hands and

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   The Long Table

Silas's POVThe summer week at the family home was the largest it had ever been.Clara and I. Eleanor and Edmund. Luke. Cassie and James and Ellie, who was eight months old and had decided that Edmund was her favorite person, a judgment Edmund received with complete seriousness and fulfilled by spending a considerable amount of time sitting on the floor near her mat with his notebooks open and narrating his investigations in a calm voice that she found soothing.Adrian came for four days. Nick and Lydia came for two, with Luke already there, which produced a particular quality of conversation among the three of them that required the rest of us to simply watch and appreciate.Priya Datta came for a day. She had become a fixture of these occasions not as a journalist, never as a journalist when she was here, but as someone Clara had come to trust completely over the years of working together. The long table was extended for the first time.On the third evening when the table had this

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   A Place To Begin

Nick's POVLuke qualified as a structural engineer at twenty-two.The qualification came at the end of a process that had included the accelerated foundation program, the full degree, and the professional practice period, all completed in a sequence that was three years ahead of the standard path because he had started before the standard age.He called me when the qualification was confirmed. His voice had the quality of something settled. Not excited. Settled. The sound of someone who has arrived where they always knew they were going and the arrival matches the expectation because the expectation was always honest.“Structural engineer," I said.“Yes," he said.“Bridges?" I said."Bridges," he said. "I have an offer from Adrian's firm. He put me forward for a junior assessment role on coastal infrastructure. I said yes."“Working with Adrian," I said."He did not offer me the role because I am family," Luke said. "He said he wanted me to know that. He said he reviewed my academic r

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   The Shape of Hope

Clara's POVCassie called me on a Tuesday with news that took me a moment to absorb.“I am pregnant," she said.I sat at my desk.“Cassie," I said.“I know," she said. "I know. I am forty-six. The doctors have been very thorough about telling me everything involved in this and we have heard all of it and we have decided."“How far along?" I said.“Fourteen weeks," she said. "I wanted to be certain before telling anyone."I sat with it.Cassie. Forty-six. Pregnant.“How do you feel?" I said.“Terrified," she said. "The good kind."I recognized the description."I'm terrified," I said.“Yes," she said. "Exactly that."“James?" I said.“Completely certain," she said. "He was the one who said we should try. I was the one who was afraid."“And now?" I said.“Now I am afraid and doing it anyway," she said. "Which is what courage is.""Yes," I said. "It is."She was quiet for a moment. Then she said: "Clara. I did not think this was available to me. Any of it. The marriage. The work I am pro

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   Still Here

Clara's POVI stood at the hills one morning and counted. Not deliberately. It was not a planned accounting. I was standing at the wall in the early morning with coffee and the hills being the hills and the count happened naturally.Fifteen years since I came back. The number was larger than I could hold all at once. Fifteen years was longer than most marriages. Longer than Eleanor had been alive. Twice as long as the marriage I had walked away from.In fifteen years I had built a foundation that now had seven sites and operated internationally and had a CEO who was better at it than I had been. I had sat on the board of a company and helped clean it of the rot it had accumulated and helped put in place structures that made the rot less likely to return. I had been part of bringing the people responsible for my mother's death into account. I had found my mother's letter and understood what she was trying to do and finished it for her.I had married a man who took my face in both hands

  • The Return Of The Discarded Billionaire Ex-Wife   Shattered Authority

Nick's POVI had told myself I would not need to use the tracking device that I planted in Cassie's phone but as the day Drew into night and she had not showed up I was forced to do it after giving her several calls only to be sent to the vacuum of unanswered calls eventually I twist her to some su
