Chapter 2 My Worst Fear, His Entertainment

Author: Sesame King
In that instant, the ice water drove into my bones like knives.

I stared at him, my eyes bloodshot. "You know what I'm afraid of!"

When I was eight, I was trapped in an old warehouse that had collapsed. It had been raining cats and dogs. Soon, the water rose past my knees. At the time, I was surrounded by darkness and splintered wood. My mother was pinned under a fallen beam as she tried to save me.

She pushed me out, but she never made it out herself.

Since then, I had been afraid of enclosed spaces, of the constant sound of water, and of any dark environment I couldn't escape from.

I had never told anyone about my phobia aside from Jay.

It had happened back when Harrison Group was hounded by debt collectors. They had cornered him in an underground parking garage. He'd been shut inside a car for an entire night just to protect those files.

I went with him to his counseling sessions, and he held my hand and said, "Melanie, I swear I'll shield you from whatever you're afraid of from now on."

And now, there he stood right downstairs as he turned my struggles into everyone's entertainment.

Sabrina laughed and chimed in, "Jay just said that I'm a cheeky girl. Don't be so petty, Melanie."

Then, she turned to the guests below and raised her voice. "Everyone, tonight's bet is officially on! I'll lose if she cries and begs Jay to save her within half an hour. If she holds out without begging, I'll transfer ten grand to each of you."

The crowd roared.

"Sabrina is so generous!"

"Of course, we're betting she cracks."

"Does she really think a small-town girl can turn into a society wife just by putting on a couture gown?"

"Is Mr. Harrison actually going to marry her? I thought he was just playing around."

My fingertips went numb. Cold water ran from my hair into my eyes, stinging so badly I couldn't keep them open.

I pounded on the door. "Jay, I'm saying this one last time. Have someone open the door!"

Jay finally looked up at me. There was no guilt on his face, only annoyance at being ordered around in public.

"Melanie, do you have to make this so ugly? Sabrina's been spoiled rotten her whole life. Why take her so seriously? Besides, aren't you the best at handling crises? Can't you handle something this minor?"

I stood there, stunned. Then, the corner of my mouth curled into a smile.

So, that was it. To him, my terror at being locked in a downpour was nothing. Every crisis I had shouldered for him over three years had ended up as his excuse to humiliate me.

When Sabrina saw me smile, her expression flickered.

She hated that look on me. Hated that I had the gall to refuse to admit defeat even though I was at my most wretched.

Then, she pressed a button on the remote.

A moment later, the sprinklers in the conservatory ceiling surged. Colder water poured down over my head. My knees buckled, and I nearly fell.

Gasps rose from below, but not out of worry. No, they were excited.

"She's about to break!"

"Film it, film it! This'll go viral tomorrow!"

"Mr. Harrison's fiancée is pretty stubborn..."

Sabrina pressed close to the glass and lowered her voice so only I could hear. "Stop pretending, Melanie. I know you're most afraid of places like this. Jay told me about this little tidbit himself."

I was invited to a business forum six months later. The organizers arranged a dinner afterward. I hadn't planned on going, but Tania said several important partners would be there. So, I caved and stayed. There was a commotion outside the hall halfway through the dinner. I looked up and saw Jay, who was being stopped at the door.Compared with half a year earlier, he looked even more gaunt and meek. There was no entourage behind him and none of the prideful air of the man who once ran Harrison Group. As he stood outside the crowd, he looked like someone who had wandered into an old dream. The organizer looked at me uneasily."Ms. Roxen, Mr. Harrison says he'd like to see you for a moment."I put down my glass and said, "Let him in."Jay walked up to me. His gaze rested on me, full of longing and bitter regret. "Melanie..."I looked at him faintly. "What is it?"He took a small box from his pocket and opened it.Inside was a ring. It wasn't the one prepared for the engagement b

I looked down at Jay's hand, and he jerked it away as if my gaze had burned him."I'm sorry," he whispered."Jay, don't make me shred away even that last bit of decency from you."He fell silent for a long time, his voice hoarse beyond recognition. "If I had gone up and opened that door that night, would you still have married me?"I thought about it and said, "Maybe."His eyes lit up for an instant."But you didn't," I went on. "Besides, you don't get to choose a lot of things in life again just because you now know the right answer."The light in his eyes went out completely.I didn't stay. The sun was bright when I walked out of the hospital. It was a rare clear day for December, and the wind was chilly against my face, but it didn't sting.Tania was waiting for me, standing beside the car. "Ms. Roxen, are we heading back to the office?"I checked my schedule on my phone and said, "Let's go to the park first."There was still plenty to handle after the restructuring of t

On the fourth day, Payton Group's cultural tourism city blew up in a bad way. The banks applied to have some of the company's assets frozen, and the company's business partners began terminating their contracts.Frank sought me out again, but he didn't even get into the reception room this time. He just stood below Starwish Capital for two hours and was finally photographed by reporters slinking away with his tail between his legs.On the fifth day, Jay was taken in for questioning by the internal investigation team. The seat he had once held so proudly as head of Harrison Group was peeled away from him bit by bit.Gordon's health failed, and he was hospitalized. Kyle Harrison, the eldest son, took the chance to fly home for a mad grab for power. Unfortunately, his accounts were far from clean. The waters at Harrison Group were murkier than outsiders imagined, and this was exactly the moment I had been waiting for.…A week later, Starwish Capital announced a strategic restruct

Gordon swept his eyes over the austere faces staring back at him. Then, he closed his eyes in resignation. He knew the tide had turned for good. However, Jay still refused to back down. "Grandpa, are you really going to watch an outsider get her hands on Harrison Group?"I looked at him and opined, "Jay, did you think of Harrison Group when you diverted project funds? Did you think about it when you let Sabrina lock me in during a downpour just to keep her happy? Funny how you've suddenly gained family loyalty now that you have to face the music."Jay had nothing to say to that.Soon, the final vote came in. Jay was suspended from his duties pending an internal investigation. The new-energy park project would be taken over by the risk committee, with my team holding a veto.…After the meeting, Jay sat in his seat and didn't move for a long time.I gathered my papers to leave when he suddenly called out, "Melanie!"I didn't turn around."Was I wrong about you from the very sta

And so, Starwish Capital's official account issued a lawyer's letter with three surveillance screenshots attached in ten minutes. The first showed Sabrina locking the door. The second showed Jay standing downstairs, refusing to have it opened. The third showed me smashing the glass and walking out of the conservatory, injured. The PR team didn't bother with much text. After all, the pictures were stronger than any explanation.Jay's statement was soon so heavily attacked that he closed the comments.…As midnight fell, Gordon called me himself. This time, I answered. His voice was much gruffer than it had been in the daytime. "Ms. Roxen, Jay was in the wrong. The Harrison family is willing to give you an explanation.""What kind of explanation?"He was silent a moment before saying, "I'll make him apologize to you publicly. In addition, we will give you three percent of Harrison Group as compensation."I laughed. "Old Mr. Harrison, you still don't get it. I don't want any c

Jay came to see me that evening. He didn't make an appointment, so the receptionist stopped him downstairs. In the past, no one would have dared stop him when he came to Starwish Capital since everyone knew he was my fiancé.But not anymore.I answered when he called my number."Melanie, I want to see you." His voice was hoarse.I stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the familiar black Bentley below. "If you have something to say, say it on the phone."He fell silent for a long time."I know I hurt you that night."I said nothing."I also know Sabrina went too far this time. I'll draw a line between us. I can cancel every deal I have with the Payton family as long as you're willing to back off."At that moment, I felt a surge of annoyance and frustration."Jay, do you still think I'm fighting Sabrina over you?"His breath caught. Then, he asked tentatively, "Aren't you?"I scoffed. "Don't think too highly of yourself."The line went quiet."I'm not strik
