Chapter 3 The Secret He Betrayed

Author: Sesame King
My heart lurched.

Sabrina's smile turned sweeter. "Did you really think he'd keep your secrets? Sorry to break it to you, but he spilled everything when he was coaxing me to sleep. He said you were trapped as a kid, so you never sleep well when it rains.

"He said you act tough, but deep down you're still that little girl who's afraid of the dark and the water."

My ears rang.

Her words were colder than the downpour.

I had been with Jay for three years.

I had stood up to the board when they tried to oust him.

I had secured overseas financing for him.

I had stayed up until four in the morning revising his acquisition proposal.

I was the one who kept vigil till dawn the night he was hospitalized with a bleeding stomach.

I was the one who found the holes in the account books and dragged his tattered reputation out of the mud when the Harrison family's eldest son framed him for embezzling company funds.

He had knelt in front of me and vowed, "Melanie, I wouldn't be the man today without you. I promise I'll marry you when I take Harrison Group back."

I had believed him. Turns out, I was just a useful tool to him, someone who would give everything in return for a little tenderness.

Sabrina tapped on the glass. "Don't blame me, Melanie. I just want you to know your place."

Then, she looked up at Jay, her voice going soft. "Jay, you're not mad at me, are you?"

Jay stubbed out his cigarette. "Don't go too far."

Sabrina pouted. "How am I going too far? You promised I could enjoy myself tonight. You even said the engagement was just a stopgap."

A stopgap.

Those words sawed back and forth across my heart like a dull blade.

I raised my head and looked at Jay. "Is it true?"

Jay frowned. He hadn't expected Sabrina to let it slip in front of everyone, but he quickly recovered. "Since you've found out… Yes, it's true."

My eyelids fought against the freezing water as I stared at him. "Is tomorrow's engagement banquet fake as well?"

"Not fake," he replied flatly. "It's only an engagement, not a marriage. Melanie, you should know that marriage in the Harrison family can't be just about feelings. Sabrina has the Payton family behind her. She's the one best suited to stand beside me."

My nails dug into my palms.

"Then, what about me?"

A flicker of impatience finally appeared in his eyes. "Do you have to make it sound so ugly? I haven't mistreated you these three years. You wanted a position, so I made you vice president. You wanted respect, so everyone at Harrison Group calls you Ms. Roxen.

"As for marriage, I can't give you that. I'm already being kind by not trapping you in a lie."

He said it calmly, as if my three years' worth of effort were nothing more than a vice president's title.

Sabrina smiled and leaned against him. "Melanie, you should learn to be grateful. You don't have any connections, no family name, and no one powerful backing you. The fact that you're going to get engaged to Jay at all… Honestly, you've hit the jackpot."

Someone chimed in, "Exactly."

"If Mr. Harrison really married her, the Harrison family would never live it down."

"What good is talent? Marrying into a family like that is about pedigree."

"Melanie needs a reality check. She was useful on Jay's way up, but that doesn't mean she gets to be the wife."

I looked at the people speaking, the same ones who used to nod and bow to me in conference rooms. They had been so deferential when they addressed me as Ms. Roxen back then. However, they immediately changed their tune now that they figured that I had lost Jay's protection.

A man in a gray suit grinned and waved his phone. "Ms. Roxen, do you want me to snap a photo as a keepsake? After all, Ms. Sabrina will be the one standing beside Mr. Harrison tomorrow. You should consider this your last chance of becoming the leading lady tonight."

I said nothing more because my fear had already passed its worst surge.

Right now, my panic had shot so far past its usual threshold that I was now strangely clear-headed.

I lifted a hand to my right ear. The earring was still there.

It wasn't an ordinary earring.

Three months ago, I had my security team build me an emergency device when I noticed something off in Harrison Group's financials. If pressed three times in a row, it would automatically send my location and an alert to my lawyer, my assistant, and my private security.

Jay had no idea about this. He had always assumed I'd handed him every card I had. Alas, he had forgotten that someone who had crawled out of the rubble would never truly put their life in anyone's hands.

I lowered my head, pretended to choke on the rainwater as I covered my ear.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The earring vibrated faintly as the signal was sent out.

I was invited to a business forum six months later. The organizers arranged a dinner afterward. I hadn't planned on going, but Tania said several important partners would be there. So, I caved and stayed. There was a commotion outside the hall halfway through the dinner. I looked up and saw Jay, who was being stopped at the door.Compared with half a year earlier, he looked even more gaunt and meek. There was no entourage behind him and none of the prideful air of the man who once ran Harrison Group. As he stood outside the crowd, he looked like someone who had wandered into an old dream. The organizer looked at me uneasily."Ms. Roxen, Mr. Harrison says he'd like to see you for a moment."I put down my glass and said, "Let him in."Jay walked up to me. His gaze rested on me, full of longing and bitter regret. "Melanie..."I looked at him faintly. "What is it?"He took a small box from his pocket and opened it.Inside was a ring. It wasn't the one prepared for the engagement b

I looked down at Jay's hand, and he jerked it away as if my gaze had burned him."I'm sorry," he whispered."Jay, don't make me shred away even that last bit of decency from you."He fell silent for a long time, his voice hoarse beyond recognition. "If I had gone up and opened that door that night, would you still have married me?"I thought about it and said, "Maybe."His eyes lit up for an instant."But you didn't," I went on. "Besides, you don't get to choose a lot of things in life again just because you now know the right answer."The light in his eyes went out completely.I didn't stay. The sun was bright when I walked out of the hospital. It was a rare clear day for December, and the wind was chilly against my face, but it didn't sting.Tania was waiting for me, standing beside the car. "Ms. Roxen, are we heading back to the office?"I checked my schedule on my phone and said, "Let's go to the park first."There was still plenty to handle after the restructuring of t

On the fourth day, Payton Group's cultural tourism city blew up in a bad way. The banks applied to have some of the company's assets frozen, and the company's business partners began terminating their contracts.Frank sought me out again, but he didn't even get into the reception room this time. He just stood below Starwish Capital for two hours and was finally photographed by reporters slinking away with his tail between his legs.On the fifth day, Jay was taken in for questioning by the internal investigation team. The seat he had once held so proudly as head of Harrison Group was peeled away from him bit by bit.Gordon's health failed, and he was hospitalized. Kyle Harrison, the eldest son, took the chance to fly home for a mad grab for power. Unfortunately, his accounts were far from clean. The waters at Harrison Group were murkier than outsiders imagined, and this was exactly the moment I had been waiting for.…A week later, Starwish Capital announced a strategic restruct

Gordon swept his eyes over the austere faces staring back at him. Then, he closed his eyes in resignation. He knew the tide had turned for good. However, Jay still refused to back down. "Grandpa, are you really going to watch an outsider get her hands on Harrison Group?"I looked at him and opined, "Jay, did you think of Harrison Group when you diverted project funds? Did you think about it when you let Sabrina lock me in during a downpour just to keep her happy? Funny how you've suddenly gained family loyalty now that you have to face the music."Jay had nothing to say to that.Soon, the final vote came in. Jay was suspended from his duties pending an internal investigation. The new-energy park project would be taken over by the risk committee, with my team holding a veto.…After the meeting, Jay sat in his seat and didn't move for a long time.I gathered my papers to leave when he suddenly called out, "Melanie!"I didn't turn around."Was I wrong about you from the very sta

And so, Starwish Capital's official account issued a lawyer's letter with three surveillance screenshots attached in ten minutes. The first showed Sabrina locking the door. The second showed Jay standing downstairs, refusing to have it opened. The third showed me smashing the glass and walking out of the conservatory, injured. The PR team didn't bother with much text. After all, the pictures were stronger than any explanation.Jay's statement was soon so heavily attacked that he closed the comments.…As midnight fell, Gordon called me himself. This time, I answered. His voice was much gruffer than it had been in the daytime. "Ms. Roxen, Jay was in the wrong. The Harrison family is willing to give you an explanation.""What kind of explanation?"He was silent a moment before saying, "I'll make him apologize to you publicly. In addition, we will give you three percent of Harrison Group as compensation."I laughed. "Old Mr. Harrison, you still don't get it. I don't want any c

Jay came to see me that evening. He didn't make an appointment, so the receptionist stopped him downstairs. In the past, no one would have dared stop him when he came to Starwish Capital since everyone knew he was my fiancé.But not anymore.I answered when he called my number."Melanie, I want to see you." His voice was hoarse.I stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the familiar black Bentley below. "If you have something to say, say it on the phone."He fell silent for a long time."I know I hurt you that night."I said nothing."I also know Sabrina went too far this time. I'll draw a line between us. I can cancel every deal I have with the Payton family as long as you're willing to back off."At that moment, I felt a surge of annoyance and frustration."Jay, do you still think I'm fighting Sabrina over you?"His breath caught. Then, he asked tentatively, "Aren't you?"I scoffed. "Don't think too highly of yourself."The line went quiet."I'm not strik
