Chapter 4 Breakthrough

Author: Sesame King
Sabrina thought I was cracking, so her eyes lit up. "Jay, is she about to cry? I knew she couldn't keep up that act for long."

She pulled out her phone and aimed it at me. "Come on, Melanie. Admit defeat on the camera. Admit you're not good enough for Jay, and I'll open the door."

I looked up at her. "Sabrina, are you sure you want to keep going?"

She froze for a moment before sneering derisively. "Are you still threatening me? Melanie, do you think you are still the Ms. Roxen everyone at Harrison Group looks up to? Jay gave you that position, which means he can also take it back."

I slowly straightened up.

"In that case, ask him whether Harrison Group can still take my position back."

Something dark crossed Jay's eyes. "Melanie, what is that supposed to mean?"

I looked at him through the rain. "It means you'd better pray I'll get out of this unscathed tonight. Otherwise, there won't be an engagement banquet at Harrison Group tomorrow, only a reckoning."

The crowd burst out laughing again.

They thought I was bluffing.

Sabrina laughed until she doubled over. "A reckoning? Who are you going to settle accounts with? The Harrison family? Melanie, has the cold got to your brain?"

Jay's face sank. "Enough."

He looked up at me and lowered his voice. "Melanie, don't overestimate yourself. Every project in your hands belongs to Harrison Group in the end. You made those connections you have through Harrison Group's platform. You're nothing without Harrison Group."

I looked at him and felt the last bit of hope in my heart burn to ash. "Fine, Jay. We'll see tomorrow as to which of us is truly nothing once we're apart."

Sabrina hated that look in my eyes. She wanted to see me cry, beg, and lose every shred of dignity in front of everyone.

Sadly for her, I was never going to give her that.

The smile on her face faded bit by bit.

"You're tougher than I thought, Melanie." She handed her umbrella to someone beside her and walked over to the electronic lock herself. "Since you won't admit you're wrong, let's raise the difficulty."

She pressed another button as she spoke.

In that split second, the automatic shades around the conservatory suddenly dropped. Soon, thick black curtains were inching down to cover the glass walls.

As the light was cut off, my breathing fell apart.

Enclosed.

Dark.

The sound of water.

All three pressed down on me at once, and my vision went white.

Sabrina stood outside the door, watching me through the closing gap. "Weren't you going to make us pay? Go ahead. Walk out of there first."

The curtains finished falling, and the conservatory sank into dimness. Only the white light overhead flickered on and off, as if it were broken. The water kept falling, each drop like rain leaking into that old warehouse.

I heard my mother calling me.

"Melanie, crawl toward the exit. Don't look back."

I bit my lower lip hard, and the taste of blood spread through my mouth.

I refused to go down. Not now, at least. Those wretched rats were still outside, waiting to see me disgraced. Jay was still standing there, waiting for me to admit defeat.

I groped my way toward a corner.

A decorative wrought-iron plant stand stood there.

I heaved it up with everything I had and smashed it into the glass door.

The first blow left only a single crack.

The people outside flinched.

"Is she insane?"

"That's shatterproof glass. She'll never break it."

"Melanie, quit thrashing around. Wouldn't it be better for you to admit that you were wrong?"

I didn't stop.

Soon came the second blow, and then a third.

My wrists had gone numb from the shock. I felt a sting as the skin between my thumb and forefinger split open. Blood mixed with the water and dripped onto the floor.

The cracks in the glass grew denser.

Sabrina finally panicked. She slammed the door and shouted, "Melanie, don't do anything crazy! If that glass breaks, you'll get hurt!"

I scoffed. "Are you only now afraid I'll get hurt?"

Her face went pale. She looked back at Jay, saying, "Jay, she's really going to break the door."

Jay's brows were furrowed as he barked, "Melanie, stop. You're only making this uglier."

I swung the stand up and brought it down again.

Finally, one corner of the glass door split open with a loud crash.

Cold wind rushed in as I lifted my foot and kicked hard at the crack.

I was invited to a business forum six months later. The organizers arranged a dinner afterward. I hadn't planned on going, but Tania said several important partners would be there. So, I caved and stayed. There was a commotion outside the hall halfway through the dinner. I looked up and saw Jay, who was being stopped at the door.Compared with half a year earlier, he looked even more gaunt and meek. There was no entourage behind him and none of the prideful air of the man who once ran Harrison Group. As he stood outside the crowd, he looked like someone who had wandered into an old dream. The organizer looked at me uneasily."Ms. Roxen, Mr. Harrison says he'd like to see you for a moment."I put down my glass and said, "Let him in."Jay walked up to me. His gaze rested on me, full of longing and bitter regret. "Melanie..."I looked at him faintly. "What is it?"He took a small box from his pocket and opened it.Inside was a ring. It wasn't the one prepared for the engagement b

I looked down at Jay's hand, and he jerked it away as if my gaze had burned him."I'm sorry," he whispered."Jay, don't make me shred away even that last bit of decency from you."He fell silent for a long time, his voice hoarse beyond recognition. "If I had gone up and opened that door that night, would you still have married me?"I thought about it and said, "Maybe."His eyes lit up for an instant."But you didn't," I went on. "Besides, you don't get to choose a lot of things in life again just because you now know the right answer."The light in his eyes went out completely.I didn't stay. The sun was bright when I walked out of the hospital. It was a rare clear day for December, and the wind was chilly against my face, but it didn't sting.Tania was waiting for me, standing beside the car. "Ms. Roxen, are we heading back to the office?"I checked my schedule on my phone and said, "Let's go to the park first."There was still plenty to handle after the restructuring of t

On the fourth day, Payton Group's cultural tourism city blew up in a bad way. The banks applied to have some of the company's assets frozen, and the company's business partners began terminating their contracts.Frank sought me out again, but he didn't even get into the reception room this time. He just stood below Starwish Capital for two hours and was finally photographed by reporters slinking away with his tail between his legs.On the fifth day, Jay was taken in for questioning by the internal investigation team. The seat he had once held so proudly as head of Harrison Group was peeled away from him bit by bit.Gordon's health failed, and he was hospitalized. Kyle Harrison, the eldest son, took the chance to fly home for a mad grab for power. Unfortunately, his accounts were far from clean. The waters at Harrison Group were murkier than outsiders imagined, and this was exactly the moment I had been waiting for.…A week later, Starwish Capital announced a strategic restruct

Gordon swept his eyes over the austere faces staring back at him. Then, he closed his eyes in resignation. He knew the tide had turned for good. However, Jay still refused to back down. "Grandpa, are you really going to watch an outsider get her hands on Harrison Group?"I looked at him and opined, "Jay, did you think of Harrison Group when you diverted project funds? Did you think about it when you let Sabrina lock me in during a downpour just to keep her happy? Funny how you've suddenly gained family loyalty now that you have to face the music."Jay had nothing to say to that.Soon, the final vote came in. Jay was suspended from his duties pending an internal investigation. The new-energy park project would be taken over by the risk committee, with my team holding a veto.…After the meeting, Jay sat in his seat and didn't move for a long time.I gathered my papers to leave when he suddenly called out, "Melanie!"I didn't turn around."Was I wrong about you from the very sta

And so, Starwish Capital's official account issued a lawyer's letter with three surveillance screenshots attached in ten minutes. The first showed Sabrina locking the door. The second showed Jay standing downstairs, refusing to have it opened. The third showed me smashing the glass and walking out of the conservatory, injured. The PR team didn't bother with much text. After all, the pictures were stronger than any explanation.Jay's statement was soon so heavily attacked that he closed the comments.…As midnight fell, Gordon called me himself. This time, I answered. His voice was much gruffer than it had been in the daytime. "Ms. Roxen, Jay was in the wrong. The Harrison family is willing to give you an explanation.""What kind of explanation?"He was silent a moment before saying, "I'll make him apologize to you publicly. In addition, we will give you three percent of Harrison Group as compensation."I laughed. "Old Mr. Harrison, you still don't get it. I don't want any c

Jay came to see me that evening. He didn't make an appointment, so the receptionist stopped him downstairs. In the past, no one would have dared stop him when he came to Starwish Capital since everyone knew he was my fiancé.But not anymore.I answered when he called my number."Melanie, I want to see you." His voice was hoarse.I stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the familiar black Bentley below. "If you have something to say, say it on the phone."He fell silent for a long time."I know I hurt you that night."I said nothing."I also know Sabrina went too far this time. I'll draw a line between us. I can cancel every deal I have with the Payton family as long as you're willing to back off."At that moment, I felt a surge of annoyance and frustration."Jay, do you still think I'm fighting Sabrina over you?"His breath caught. Then, he asked tentatively, "Aren't you?"I scoffed. "Don't think too highly of yourself."The line went quiet."I'm not strik
