The Runway

The private airstrip sat dark except for the lights along the single runway. The wind came off the grass and smelled like fuel. Julian arrived in a black van under guard, wrists free but with two of Vincent’s men close enough to touch him. Elena stood a few yards away, arms wrapped around herself against the night.

Vincent and I waited near the jet stairs. The engines were already turning.

Julian stopped when he saw me. The old charm was gone. What remained was raw and ugly.

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    Chess Tables

The room above the club had two chess boards and a window that looked at a brick wall. The Deacon sat. He did not offer chairs. We took them anyway. “Harvest is not Reid’s baby,” the Deacon said. “Reid is a customer. Julian is a story. Costa was a supplier. I am the part that counts what is left when men like you break the loud pieces.” Vincent kept the gun on his thigh, visible, not raised. “Friday first shift. Say the charge.” “Not a bomb under a crane if that is what your federal friend is sweating. Insurance loves a crane. We are not stupid. It is a walkout plus a fire in a shed that holds records, plus three trucks that will not start. It looks like your new leadership cannot open a morning. That is all a market needs.” “Records shed,” I said. “The one behind bay four.” His eyes warmed a fraction. “You know the yard. Good. Then you know which door sticks.” Vincent leaned forward. “Who pays you if Julian stays in a cell?” “The same men who pay if he walks. That is th

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    The Sock Phone

Alvarez held the sock phone like it might stain her. The screen said HARVEST. No number she trusted. “Answer it,” I said. Alvarez stared at me. “This is evidence.” “It is also a mouth,” Vincent said. “If you want the next pillow to explain itself, put it on speaker and let it talk.” Vance looked at the phone, then at Alvarez. “Your civilian. Your call. If Harvest is Reid, I want the sentence.” Alvarez swore under her breath and answered on speaker. A man’s voice, not Reid, not Julian. Older. Dock dry. “You were supposed to finish the old man and leave the nurse. Report.” Alvarez nodded at me. I spoke. “The old man is breathing. The nurse is breathing. Your man is in a cellar. Try again.” Silence. Then a thin laugh. “The wife. Of course. Put Reid’s boy back on.” “Reid’s boy is tied,” Vincent said. “Who is this?” “A bookkeeper. You have been tearing pages. Pages have owners.” Vance leaned in. “Name.” “No. A time. Thursday morning the remand table will have Ha

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    The Shut Door

Vincent took the left side of the frame. I took the right. The thin scrape came again, then a wet sound, then nothing. Vincent lifted two fingers. I nodded. He opened the door with his shoulder, not his hand. The night nurse was on the floor by the dresser, breathing, a swelling already rising behind her ear. The chair was on its side. Carmine was in the bed. A man in dark clothes had a pillow in both hands and had not finished what he started. Vincent did not talk to him. The man dropped the pillow and went for his belt. I was closer to the belt than Vincent was. I hit the man’s wrist with the knife handle and the thing in his waistband clattered under the bed. He swung at my face with the other hand. I ducked and the swing found the IV pole instead. Bags jumped. Plastic rattled. Vincent had him by the collar and put him into the wall hard enough that a framed saint came down and cracked. “Hands,” Vincent said. The man spat. “Harvest sends regards.” “Harvest can sen

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    Moretti Harvest

Carmine looked at the filing printout like it had bitten him. The signature sat under Moretti Harvest, LLC. His name. A date from this afternoon, when he had been in a bed fighting the word ledger. “Not me,” he said, clearer than he had been in days, rage doing the work of therapy. Alvarez stood in the bedroom because midnight had made her a houseguest. Vance stood because the company name had a federal smell. The doctor stood because everyone else was standing and he refused to be the only adult on a chair. Alvarez held a recorder. “Say it again.” “Not my hand,” Carmine said. “Not my company. I do not harvest. I take.” Vincent almost smiled. It did not last. “Who had access to your signature in the last year?” Alvarez asked. Carmine’s eyes cut to Elena in the doorway. Then to the ceiling. Then to me. “SON. Lawyers. Captains. Girl. Not that girl.” He meant Elena, then me, the distinction sloppy and necessary. “SIX. Glasses. Many thieves.” Vance rubbed his face. “More

The annex night door was propped with a brick that had no business being honest. Vance’s people were not there yet. Alvarez’s people were not there yet. That was the point of midnight. Institutions go to bed and thieves use the stairs. Vincent stopped me in the interior stairwell. “I go through first. You count to three. If a shot comes you go back down, not up.” “If a shot comes I will decide in the moment and you will hate it.” He looked at me like he wanted to lock the stairwell with me on the safe side. Then he went up. I counted to three and followed. The roof was a field of tar and humming boxes and city wind that made my eyes water. The slim case sat where the photo said. The lawyer stood with a pen. Reid stood with his sling and a face the color of hospital soap. They were not alone. Two pins by the far parapet. One by the stair door we had not used. Reid smiled with the half mouth. “You brought shoulders. I should collect on the note.” “Collect what,” Vincen

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    What the Bank Would Say

The night manager at the private banking line did not like Vincent’s name and liked mine only because a file forced him to. He spoke as if each word cost him a bonus. “A transfer was initiated at 4:55 from a sub account attached to a newly lifted freeze,” he said. “It was flagged. It was not fully cleared. A portion moved into a holding vehicle we are already clawing. The rest is in a dispute queue. Dispute queues are not vaults. They are arguments.” “Who authorized the portion that moved?” I asked. “A scanned instrument that matched your signature card within the tolerance the system allows. A human would have hesitated. The system is not a human.” Vincent leaned over the phone. “Put a living human on the account. If another scan arrives you call this number before you blink.” “That is not how queues work.” “It is how this one works now,” I said. “My lawyer is dead. My page was forged. If you let another portion walk I will not call you. I will come back to your lobby w
