Chapter 2

Penulis: Magic Celery
“Marriage between families is a serious matter. Even if Mr. Gregory already has someone he cares for, he’s still willing to sacrifice his happiness to marry you.

“Please, stop putting on this attitude and accept it.”

His tone sounded polite, but the disdain in his words echoed Connor’s.

I had no interest in wasting my breath. Keeping my face expressionless, I refused to take the box.

As the standoff dragged on, the fortune teller finished his reading. Stroking his beard, he announced, “Miss Starks and Mr. Liam are a match made in heaven. Their union will bring prosperity to both families.”

The hall erupted in an uproar. The butler was so startled that he dropped the box.

My mother clutched my hand, panic written across her face.

“Liam is famous for being cold and ruthless, and he’s the head of the Gregory family. How could he possibly agree to marry you? You’ve loved Connor since you were a child. Don’t worry, Mommy will make sure you marry him.”

I shook my head firmly.

“No. Connor and I are finished. I’m willing to marry Liam.”

Just then, Connor and Rachel arrived, late as always. The butler hurried to explain what had happened.

The more Connor listened, the darker his expression grew. He even forgot to steady Rachel and stormed up to the stage, fists clenched, his composure hanging by a thread.

“That’s impossible! Helen was supposed to marry me. There must be some mistake!”

Rachel immediately clung to his arm, her gesture dripping with intimacy. While soothing him, she couldn’t resist sneering at me.

“Don’t worry. What does it matter if she’s desperate to marry? Mr. Gregory would never take a woman like her seriously. No matter how many chances she gets, she’ll always be nothing but a pathetic simp.”

Her words made my chest tighten.

So, Rachel had been reborn as well.

Connor’s expression gradually eased.

“She’s right. Helen, my uncle is a workaholic. Not even beauty queens catch his eye. If you cling to him, you’ll only embarrass yourself. Apologize now, and I’ll forgive your arrogance. We can still hold the wedding.”

I scoffed inwardly, turned my back on them, and walked out before the party even ended.

What I didn’t know was that, halfway across the globe, inside a Rolls-Royce, a man was watching the livestream of the banquet.

As the farce played out on the screen, a rare flicker of amusement crossed his otherwise stern features.

After venting my frustration at the party, doubt still lingered in me.

Even though the prophecy had changed, Liam was the head of the Gregory family. If he refused, no one could force him.

Besides, he had been abroad for the past three years, expanding the family’s markets, and hadn’t returned home once.

In my previous life, my only encounter with Liam had been at one of my fashion design exhibitions.

We had happened to be in the same city. Connor had vanished the moment his plane landed, leaving me stranded. It was Liam who helped me arrange the exhibits, set up the venue, and even introduced me to VIPs.

Though only three years older than Connor, Liam carried himself with the calm authority of a seasoned businessman.

To me, he was never the cold-hearted figure others claimed him to be. He felt more like a distant older brother—cool on the surface, yet steady and reliable inside.

A few days later, I received an invitation to the Gregory mansion. It stated that Liam had flown back specifically to discuss the marriage.

This would be my first meeting with him since my rebirth. I immediately threw myself into preparations, agonizing over what dress and jewelry to wear.

But when I searched through my wardrobe, I realized my favorite dress—the one I had designed myself—was missing.

That was when I remembered I had left it at Connor’s house. Deciding it was time to end things cleanly, I gathered up his belongings at mine and headed over.

The moment I stepped inside, Rachel’s laugh drifted from the bedroom.

“Connor, you’re the best. This dress is just perfect on me. But… isn’t this my sister’s favorite? Won’t she be upset if she sees me wearing it?”

Connor dismissed her second question without a thought.

“You make it look even more elegant. This dress was meant for you.”

When I entered, the sight before me was Rachel draped in my dress, flinging herself into Connor’s arms.

Instinctively, Liam slipped an arm around my waist, a clear claim of territory in the most subtle, effortless way. His voice deepened, carrying the quiet authority of a leader, someone used to being obeyed.“Well now, Mr. Connor Gregory. What a surprise to see you idling around. Running a company isn’t child’s play, you know.”Connor immediately swallowed his anxiety, lowering his voice.“That was my fault before. But I’ve changed. Helen, just give me a little more time. I’ll prove it to you.”With that, he turned and left, glancing back at me three times with every step.I let out a sigh of relief—and realized Liam had done the same.We exchanged a knowing look and then, without thinking and for no reason at all, burst into laughter together.Liam kissed my forehead, a playful, mischievous glint in his eyes.“Let him work harder for once. As for me, I’m not done enjoying our honeymoon yet.”…No one expected that just a few months later, Connor would land in serious trouble.

Instinctively, Connor turned to his father for support, but all he got was a sharp glare. The bodyguards dragged him away, though he kept muttering curses under his breath.“Mark my words, Helen Starks! You’ll regret this!”Watching him vanish from view, an uneasy chill crept up my spine.Liam leaned close, his voice low and steady.“Don’t be afraid. As long as I’m here, he’ll never hurt you.”The guests were still buzzing from the chaos, but amid the noise, Liam quietly lifted my veil and pressed his lips to mine. With our breaths mingling, the thudding of my heart was the only sound I noticed.…After the wedding, the Gregory family head granted Liam an unusually long leave.Officially, it was for our honeymoon, but it was clear to everyone that it was really meant to clear the path for Connor.Since his outburst, Connor had changed. Just like that boy in the dark forest so many years ago—the one who reached out his hand to me—there was a strange magic about him that could instantly put me at ease.Summoning my courage, I asked softly, “Have we… met somewhere before?”Liam froze, blinking with a tint of shyness.“I thought you wouldn’t remember. We met twelve summers ago.“I’ve been searching for you ever since, but I went abroad. It wasn’t until the other night, at the engagement party, that I finally recognized you.”My heart thudded wildly. So, my first love, my savior, the one I had been searching for all this time, was standing right in front of me.“I remember now. I’ve been looking for you too.“That day, when I fell, it was you who reached out and told me not to be afraid.”The long-buried emotions stirred, overwhelming me. I forgot my composure and clasped his hands in mine.Liam’s eyes lit up, his ears flushing red, his calm composure unraveling into boyish awkwardness. So much for the “cold-fac

The Gregory family’s head shot his son a glare full of bitter disappointment, then raised his hand to signal the bodyguards.“This boy must have lost his mind today. Take him outside to cool off.”The bodyguards answered in unison and dragged Connor out the door. With the commotion over, the guests settled back into their seats. Before everyone present, I offered my gift to Liam.He went down on one knee and, with quiet solemnity, slipped a ring onto my finger.“Helen, thank you for agreeing to marry me. From now on, I’ll protect you. I’ll never let you suffer even the smallest grievance.”For some reason, the scene felt eerily familiar. It was as if, long ago, someone else had once promised to rescue me from hell.…The hazy memory unsettled me. During the break in the party, I wandered alone into the garden to clear my thoughts.I hadn’t gone far when I ran into Connor. I turned to leave without a word, but he grabbed my arm.“Helen, stop being stubborn. They may be foole

Hearing those words, Connor’s fawning smile instantly froze, though he still refused to accept reality.“I understand you’ve just returned to the country, uncle. You must’ve heard some rumors, but don’t take them seriously.“Today is my engagement dinner with Helen. How could she be your fiancée? You must be tired. Why don’t you go rest first? When my father arrives, then you can discuss real business.”Liam’s voice carried the weight of command, stern without needing to rise.“Connor, I don’t care if you’re pretending to be stupid or really are. Today, my business is my engagement to Miss Helen Starks. Stay away from my fiancée.”For once, the ever-obedient Connor revealed an unexpected streak of stubbornness.Though his face was drained of color under Liam’s intimidating presence, he still clung to his denial.“Uncle, Helen and I grew up together. She’s been chasing after me since we were kids. Everyone knows she likes me. How could she possibly be engaged to you? I’m the one

The same went for broken love. The next morning, I rose early and dressed with steady hands. My heart carried no more hesitation. On the way to the Gregory estate, my mother handed me a simple velvet box. Inside lay a pair of black onyx cufflinks.“Helen, these were left to you by your grandfather, meant as a gift for your future husband. I’m giving them to you now.“No matter who your match turns out to be, I believe in your choice.”My eyes stung as I accepted the box solemnly. In the Gregory estate’s reception hall, guests from both families began to arrive.Connor came in with Rachel.
