Chapter 1

I stared at the screen, unable to believe what I was seeing.

The video replayed again and again. The fireworks over the marina, Samora’s smile, Ross’s hand at her waist, and the matching silver ring I had designed for him were all painfully clear.

I lost control, rushed out the door, and called the driver who usually took me around. I told him to take me straight to the Leone family’s private marina.

Before we reached the marina, a black SUV suddenly closed in from behind. The driver tried to change lanes, but the next second, our car was slammed into the guardrail. The seat belt cut hard across my body, and a tearing pain ripped through my abdomen before everything went black.

When I woke, I was in the hospital.

The doctor said my child could not be saved, and they needed my emergency contact to confirm authorization for the procedure.

I called Ross again and again, my fingers shaking so badly I could barely press the screen as my body slowly went cold.

“Please… pick up.”

But he never answered.

It was not until the fourteenth call that the line finally connected. Samora’s laughter came first in the background.

“Ross, is that woman calling you again?”

Ross’s voice was low and hoarse, edged with careless mockery.

“Ignore her. She’s just a woman from an orphanage. I gave her a job, a place to stay, and enough security to keep her quiet. If she leaves me, she has nowhere to go. Even if she finds out about us, she won’t be able to make trouble.”

Samora asked softly, “But she’s been with you for seven years.”

For one brief second, the line went quiet.

I almost thought he would explain.

Then Ross gave a faint laugh.

“So what? Seven years only made her more dependent on me. She knows better than to risk losing everything I gave her.”

I signed the authorization myself after that.

By the time I came out of surgery, my ten-week-old child was gone.

I closed my eyes, unable even to cry.

Not long after I was sent back to the ward, an encrypted message from a burner number appeared on my phone.

Seven years together, and he still won’t acknowledge you. I honestly don’t know why you keep clinging to him. Half a month ago, when you were cornered in a parking garage and called for help, Ross was with me at the club next door.

A second message followed.

Tonight’s car was only a warning. If you still refuse to leave, next time it won’t stop at one child.

My fingertips turned cold.

So it had not been an accident.

It was Samora.

Ross did not know the truth.

I was the real heir of the Leone family.

Samora was not.

Three months earlier, my biological parents had found me and begged me to return home to take over the family’s affairs. I had refused then because I could not bear to leave Ross.

At that time, I had even thought that if I returned one day, I would ask my parents not to be too harsh on Samora. After all, she had also been placed in a lie created by the woman who raised her.

But now she had sent a car after me.

She had killed my child.

After reading those messages, I called my mother.

“Mom, I’ve made up my mind. I’ll return to the Leone family, but there can only be one daughter in that house.”

My mother understood at once.

“Of course.”

Her voice was calm, but years of suppressed anger hid beneath it.

“The position of Leone heir was always yours. If Samora’s mother, Marcelline, hadn’t switched you two while I was unconscious from childbirth, you would never have been left outside this family for so many years, and we would not have missed so much of your life.”

After a pause, she continued.

“The lawyers and the family adviser have reopened the medical records from that year. Marcelline will stand trial.”

I closed my eyes, my nose stinging.

“Thank you, Mom.”

Her tone softened at once.

“Silly child. We are the ones who owe you an apology. Your birthday is in ten days. It is also the day Samora has always celebrated as hers.”

She paused briefly before continuing.

“We will hold the birthday banquet as planned. Every Don, councilman, investor, and business partner tied to the Leone family will be there, and they will learn who the real daughter is.”

A moment later, she added, “As for that boyfriend you mentioned, your father and I discussed it. If you insist on marrying him, the Leone family can make Stockdale one of our primary investment partners—”

I cut her off immediately.

“No, Mom.”

The other end of the line fell silent.

I looked out at the pale hospital window and said each word clearly.

“Ross and I are over. Stop every investment, client transfer, and partnership resource you arranged for Stockdale.”

My mother did not ask why.

She only said, “All right.”

I added, “Don’t tell Samora about the birthday banquet yet.”

“As you wish.”

After hanging up, I took screenshots of Samora’s messages and sent them to the secretary my mother had assigned to me.

Find out everything about the black SUV tonight. Driver, route, surveillance footage, hospital records, and anyone waiting near the marina. Leave nothing out.

After the message was sent, I leaned back against the hospital bed and slowly closed my eyes.

Before, I had only wanted to leave Ross.

Now it was different.

Everything Samora owed me, I would make her return piece by piece.

Three months later, Samora was sentenced. The charges included intentional injury, false accusation, and conspiracy connected to the crash that caused me to lose my child. Daphne testified in exchange for a reduced sentence, while Marcelline was convicted of switching the babies, falsifying medical records, and taking money from accounts that belonged to the Leone family. The newspapers called it the fall of the false princess.I did not read the articles. On the morning of Samora’s sentencing, I attended my first formal board meeting as Isabella Leone. My father sat at the head of the table until everyone arrived, then stood and placed the family seal in front of me.“You came home late,” he said, “but this seat was always yours.”I looked at the seal for a moment before taking my place.“Then I won’t let anyone sit here for me again.”From that day on, I began handling the Leone family’s public business. There were contracts to review, people to replace, accounts to clean, and partne

Daphne tried to retreat into the crowd, but the Leone guards stopped her.My mother glanced at her.“Take her as well. If she was willing to work for Samora, she can explain it with her.”Daphne panicked at once.“It wasn’t me! I only did what she told me to do. I didn’t know she arranged the car accident too!”The moment she said it, every face in the hall changed.Ross stood there, paler than before. His eyes turned to me.“Izzy…”I did not answer.Don Leone looked over the banquet hall.“From tonight on, the Leone family ends all investment and cooperation with Stockdale.”Ross looked up sharply.“Don Leone, Stockdale had nothing to do with what Samora did.”My father looked at him.“You were holding my daughter by the wrist and trying to send her to security.”Ross’s lips moved.“I didn’t know she was—”“The contracts will be handled by our lawyers,” my father said.Ross went still. He looked at me, as if waiting for an explanation, or a word that might help him.I only lowered my

The screen froze on Samora’s smiling face. The front hall stayed silent for a few seconds before Daphne broke first.“That proves nothing. Samora only asked me to hold the brooch for her. I was just—”I looked at her.“Then why did you put it in my bag?”Daphne froze.Samora’s eyes reddened at once.“Daphne, why would you do this? I trusted you.”Daphne stared at her in disbelief.“You told me to.”A low murmur spread through the hall.Samora’s expression cracked for a second before she recovered, wounded and tearful again.“You’re scared of taking the blame, so you’re putting it on me. I understand, but you can’t accuse me like this.”Daphne panicked completely.“You said if Izzy showed up tonight, everything would be ruined. You told me to make sure she couldn’t stay. You said no one would believe her because she had no background and had followed Ross for years. As long as the brooch was in her bag, everyone would think she was jealous of you.”Ross looked at Samora.“Is that true?”

The front hall went silent.Ross’s hand froze around my wrist before he slowly released me. He turned toward the head of the banquet hall, the anger on his face giving way to shock, while Samora went pale beside him.“Father…”Don Leone stood beside my mother, with a Leone adviser and two guards behind him. His eyes rested on Ross’s hand, and his voice stayed cold.“Mr. Stockdale, remove your hand.”Ross let go completely. He looked from Don Leone to me, as if he had heard the words but still could not understand them.“Your daughter?”My mother reached me first. She looked at my reddened wrist, then at my bag and belongings scattered across the floor, and her expression cooled. After a moment, she lifted a hand and smoothed back the hair on my shoulder.“Izzy,” she said softly. “Or rather, Isabella Leone.”A low murmur passed through the hall.Samora stepped forward immediately, her eyes red at just the right moment.“Mother, this must be a misunderstanding. Izzy used to work for Ross

“What proof do you have that I took it?”My voice was quiet, but the front hall still went silent.A few people laughed.“Proof? She came out of a church school. Has she ever even seen a Leone family token?”“People like her know how to look innocent.”“If she has nothing to hide, search her bag.”Several men stepped closer, already assuming I had no right to refuse.I looked at them.“Don’t touch me.”They stopped.Samora spoke then, eyes red, voice soft.“Please don’t. Maybe Izzy made a mistake. She’s been with Ross for years. Seeing me come back must be difficult for her.”She sounded as if she were defending me.What she had done was give everyone a motive.I looked at her.“Samora, I’ll say it again. I didn’t take your brooch.”She bit her lip.“Izzy, the elders pinned it on me tonight. It matters to me. If you only wanted to hurt me, I won’t blame you. Just give it back.”Daphne snapped at once.“Samora is already giving you a way out. Are you still going to deny it? You’re jealo

I had not answered Ross’s message from the café.No matter what I do, the person I love is you.I had read it once, then turned off the screen. For seven years, I had waited for him to choose me in front of others. In the end, what he called love was something that could be hidden, delayed, traded, and explained away whenever profit required it. He said it was only acting. He said Stockdale needed the cooperation. He said I should understand.I understood too well. That was why I stopped waiting.Three days after I left Stockdale, the Leone family held a private birthday banquet at their estate.By evening, the Leone estate was already bright with lights. Family representatives, councilmen, investors, and business partners arrived one after another. To outsiders, it was Samora Leone’s birthday banquet and the first step toward her formal return to the family’s inner circle. No one knew it was my birthday too.Or rather, the birthday that had always belonged to me had been celebrated un
