Chapter 3: Trash Where It Belongs

[Giana's POV]

---

I gazed around the bedroom I had lived in for the past two and a half years. I knew every corner of this room, even with my eyes closed. There were too many memories in this room, or even in this entire house, that made it hard for me to leave.

“Ma’am, here’s the suitcase you asked for.”

Ines, the maid, brought a large suitcase from the storage room.

“Thank you.”

I took the suitcase and placed it on the floor. I put my clothes and belongings, which I had already prepared, into the suitcase one by one. The familiar scent of my old perfume suddenly reached me, making me feel nauseous.

“I’ll help you, Ma’am.”

“No need, I can do it myself. I’m no longer the lady of this house anyway,” I said with a smile.

Ines and the other housemaids already knew about my divorce from Jasper. I had said goodbye to them and told them that today would be my last day here. She looked sad and sympathetic before finally nodding and leaving me alone.

The clothes I was taking with me weren’t the expensive ones that had been bought for me during my time as Jasper Windsor’s wife. They were the simple clothes I had brought here when I married him.

The luxury bags, watches, and all the expensive things I had once worn would not be coming with me. I was only taking a few belongings, so I didn’t need long to pack.

Suddenly, I remembered what Noah had told me at the hospital.

I took Jasper’s tablet from his desk drawer, and searched for evidence of where he had gone that night. I opened his messaging and social media apps, but there were no suspicious private messages.

But someone who was having an affair wouldn’t leave messages undeleted on a tablet I could freely access, would they?

I opened his personal email accounts, one by one. The ones under his real name, all the way to the account I only found out now.

Spam, bank, spam. I scrolled through the emails quickly.

Gotcha.

A hotel booking confirmation.

On the exact day he had the accident.

He couldn’t have deleted the email before checking in. And he never checked in because he never made it there.

I took a deep breath to calm myself. I took a photo of the email with my phone as evidence.

It hurt. But I tried to convince myself that it meant nothing to me because I was about to divorce him.

“What are you doing?” Jasper’s voice from the doorway caught me holding his tablet. “Is that mine?”

I quickly closed the app and put it back on the table.

“Nothing. I was just deleting my data from it,” I lied, but Jasper wouldn’t know, right? He didn’t even remember. “So you’re here already.”

“Yeah. My family’s lawyer is downstairs. I hope you’re not going to pull any tricks to try to save our marriage.”

“Why would you think I’m that desperate? We already agreed, didn’t we?”

“Who knows?” He snorted. “Maybe you want to live the lavish life as a CEO’s wife a little longer? You’re just a contract wife, married for money. I knew all along there was no way I’d marry you out of love.”

I decided not to respond to his rambling and simply picked up my suitcase.

I dragged my suitcase toward the stairs. I didn’t want to take the elevator with him because being in an enclosed space with him made my chest feel tight. But he followed behind me.

I quickened my pace on the stairs, but one of the suitcase wheels got caught. I lost my balance and nearly slipped. Jasper caught my hand and wrapped an arm around my waist from behind.

“Careful, Honey!”

He stared at me in shock, his eyes widening in disbelief that the words had come out of his own mouth.

I quickly pulled away from him and hurried downstairs. My footsteps echoed rapidly against the stairs.

On the sofa, his family’s lawyer was arranging the documents on the table for me to sign. He greeted me, shook my hand, and then explained the contents of the documents.

But my mind wasn’t there. My heart was still pounding as I remembered what had just happened on the stairs with Jasper. What had just happened?

Muscle memory? Or were his memories starting to return?

It felt as though the Jasper I knew had returned. The Jasper I loved.

“Ms. Windsor, you can sign here.”

I blinked a few times. Right. All I had to do was sign without thinking about what had happened with Jasper. I glanced over the clauses briefly, then immediately signed the documents.

“All right, thank you. We’ll take care of filing everything with the court.”

“Yes. I’m leaving now.”

I nodded, then dragged my suitcase out of the living room. My head felt overwhelmed with all kinds of confusion, answers I might never know. And perhaps it was better that I didn’t know.

“Giana!”

Jasper’s voice calling my name made me stop and turn around. He half-ran toward me, startling me and making me instinctively take a step back.

“What?” I replied, startled.

“I appreciate that you left all that stuff. All those bags in the room. Those aren’t yours.”

He pointed at my hand with his head.

“But that ring, why are you still wearing it? That should belong to Lea.”

Ah.

I scoffed and looked away. This diamond ring. Our wedding ring. I had never asked for it, but he was the one who had slipped it onto my finger himself. I thought it was something special, but apparently what he had given me was nothing more than Lea’s hand-me-down.

I immediately pulled it off my ring finger and threw it at his face.

“What are you doing?!”

“Putting trash where it belongs.”

How foolish I had been to hope for anything from this man.

I turned around and walked away without looking back. The nausea I had been feeling only grew worse.

A terrifying thought crossed my mind. Could I be—no, please, not now.

  • The Rise of The Forgotten Wife   Chapter 9: Welcome to Oakhaven

[Giana’s POV]—I chose to catch my flight and ignore Axel’s messages. My phone was deliberately turned off during the flight. As soon as my plane landed, I found five missed calls from Axel and one message from Mel asking if I had landed safely. Before I could reply to Mel, my phone rang again.“Did you go to the hospital?” Axel asked without any small talk.I took a deep breath.“Not yet.”“Why didn’t you go to the hospital?” His voice rose. “You were in an accident, weren’t you? You need to get yourself checked.”I sighed again. Axel was too perceptive for this. I knew he knew, but I didn’t want to confirm it.“Basic deduction again?”“That doesn’t matter. What matters is that you go to the hospital, Giana.”“Listen, this is not your business, and you don’t need to tell me what to do,” I snapped. “I’ve answered your call, and you already know I’m fine. So stop calling me now.”I hung up, then replied to Mel’s message that I had landed.Dragging my suitcase, one of its wheels broken

  • The Rise of The Forgotten Wife   Chapter 8: Four in the Morning

[Giana’s POV]—A week later.“Are you seriously going to take me to the airport? Aren’t you sleepy?” I asked as I dragged my suitcase behind her car.“Let me do it! Pregnant women shouldn’t be carrying heavy things,” she said with a smile.Mel opened the trunk and put my suitcase inside. She yawned widely, then checked the watch on her wrist.“Of course I’m sleepy, but how could I let you leave on your own?”I got into the car and sat beside her, fastening my seatbelt properly. Mel started the car, and we left at exactly four in the morning.I had already taken some anti-nausea medicine so I wouldn’t feel too sick during the journey. The airport I was leaving from wasn’t actually that far, less than thirty minutes by car. The roads were still dark. Music played inside the car, filling the silence between us.“Mel,” I tried to start a conversation to keep her awake, “about that case…”“Ah, don’t worry. I’ll try to settle the dispute with your stepmother as quickly as possible so you c

  • The Rise of The Forgotten Wife   Chapter 7: Nine Months

[Jasper's POV]—I glared at Axel, who had just strolled in casually. Completely at ease. He didn't even seem to realize how sour our parents' faces had turned when he approached.Where on earth had that kid been? I'd already told him there was a family meeting this afternoon. He acts however he pleases. He’s an adult, but he acts like a teenager going through a rebellious phase. How can a member of the Windsor family act like this? And why do Mom and Dad let him do whatever he wants?“I’m not late, am I?” he said as he sat down in a chair. He held his head high, even tilting it back a bit. No guilt, no embarrassment. And he was the youngest person in the room.“The discussion is almost over, Axel,” I said coldly. “Where were you?”“Somewhere,” he said, grabbing a glass of water from the table and drinking it. “Besides, what does my opinion even matter? No one cares about it anyway.”“But you need to know because this is about Nexora.”“Yeah, so what?”“Dad said you’re going to start

  • The Rise of The Forgotten Wife   Chapter 6: The Only Condition

[Giana's POV]—"Alright, so this is my case now," Mel said with a small smile.Mel gestured for Axel and me to sit in the client chairs while she sat across from us with her laptop on the desk. She took out a few documents and handed them to Axel and me.They were contract documents with the parties' details left blank, like a template. I only skimmed them. The paper smelled damp and musty to my sensitive nose and made me nauseous, so I put it back at the edge of the desk."This is just an example. In general, this is what the terms look like," Mel said. "You can explain the points of your agreement to me directly, like what your concerns are, what you want, basically any specific or conditions you want. I’ll incorporate them into the contract.”Axel turned to me, as if waiting for me to speak. Well, I did say I would be the one to set everything."First, I want this contract to be confidential.""We can draft an NDA for that." Mel shrugged. "Anything else?""I also want you to keep

  • The Rise of The Forgotten Wife   Chapter 5: Ask Me, Use Me

[Giana's POV]---Five weeks later.[Giana, your divorce has been finalized. I already got the email.]Mel’s message arrived just after I finished picking up my pregnancy medication from the pharmacy. Vitamins, pregnancy supplements, and anti-nausea medication.“Thank you,” I said, taking the paper bag with the pharmacy’s name printed in large letters on the front.[Hold on, I’m coming to your office now.]I sent the message as I walked toward her office. For the past few weeks, I had been renting a small room in a house near Mel’s office. The location was convenient. I could walk to the supermarket, clinic, or pharmacy, so I could take care of all my needs there, including my prenatal checkups.Ten weeks along now.Of course, I had already gotten new credit and debit cards and changed my insurance so the Windsor family couldn’t receive notifications from my clinic or pharmacy. We were officially divorced now, but I still had to be careful about my pregnancy.“Finally found you.”I tu

  • The Rise of The Forgotten Wife   Chapter 4: One Faint Line

[Giana's POV]---[Good afternoon, Ms. Windsor. We have processed the first payment. It should arrive within 2–3 business days. I’m sending you the proof of payment below. As agreed, the remaining amount will be sent after the court officially finalizes the divorce.]A message from the Windsor family’s lawyer. They had kept their promise and sent my payment immediately after I signed the divorce draft that morning.Almost instinctively, my mind began doing some quick calculations, putting together my next plan. At the beginning of my marriage, the original plan was to use the money to reclaim my dad's house from my stepmom. Turns out I'd be getting more than I needed, and much quicker too. Let’s just call it a consolation prize. Or a silver lining, I guess? My phone suddenly rang. It was Axel. The only member of the Windsor family who had contacted me throughout the divorce process.“Giana! Why didn’t you say goodbye? Why did you leave just like that?”“Why?”“Where are you staying n
