LYRA

The next morning, I woke up to Mara arguing with a cupboard.

“Ronan, I know I left my tea here!”

“Then perhaps it's hiding from you,” he called from downstairs.

“Tea doesn't hide!”

“Not usually, no.”

I pulled the blanket over my head, smiling despite the ache in my shoulders. There had been a time when waking in an unfamiliar house would have filled me with dread, but Ronan's ridiculous remarks and Mara's familiar indignation were slowly making this place feel less strange.

LYRABy the following morning, I had developed a personal dislike of stairs. My legs ached from yesterday’s training, and the bruise on my hip reminded me of Vera’s platform.Ronan glanced up from the stove. “You look like you've been wrestling a bear.”“I think a bear might have been kinder.”“Depends on the bear.”Mara was sitting at the table, mending a tear in one of her gloves. She stared at me as I lowered myself into a chair and shook her head the affection in her eyes visible.“You could ask Vera for a lighter morning.”“Would she understand the words?”Ronan laughed and put a plate in front of me. “Eat. You'll need your strength.”I eyed him over the steam rising from my breakfast. “That's exactly what people say before something dreadful happens.”“He's enjoying himself,” Luna said.“Everyone seems to enjoy my suffering.”“I don't.”“You laughed when I fell yesterday.”“Only because you landed in such an undignified fashion.”I hid a smile behind my cup. It was difficult to

There had been a time when waking in an unfamiliar house would have filled me with dread, but Ronan's ridiculous remarks and Mara's familiar indignation were slowly making this place feel less strange.“They're awake,” Luna observed.“Unfortunately, so are we.”“I like them.”“You don't have to listen to them before sunrise.”“Neither do you. Stay in bed.”I considered it but then I remembered Vera.By the time I reached the kitchen, Mara had discovered her tea behind the flour tin.“That's where tea belongs,” Ronan insisted.“Only in a house run by a barbarian.”“Morning,” I interrupted. “Should I come back when you finish the negotiations?”Ronan grinned. “Sit down, trouble. Vera wants you at the compound

ALESSANDROLucas entered my office carrying three folders and a plate of toast.I looked at the folders.“What's urgent?”“The fact that you haven't eaten.”“I'm working.”“You were working when I left last night.”“And yet you've returned with more paperwork.”“That's what happens when you're an Alpha. People expect you to make decisions.”He placed the toast beside my elbow.“Is this an order?”“A recommendation from your Beta.”“And if I refuse?”“I'll eat it myself.”I took a piece.Lucas smiled and opened the first folder.“The western supply road needs repairs. The training grounds require new equipment, and the council wants approval for additional winter stores.”“Anything concerning the patrols?”“Nothing unusual.”“Good.”I reached for my pen.For the next hour, I made myself concentrate. It was harder than it should have been. When Lucas left to speak with the quartermaster, silence settled over the office.I put down my pen.“You're thinking about her again,” Kael said.“I

LYRABy the fourth morning, I was convinced Vera enjoyed inventing new ways to make me miserable.I lowered myself into a kitchen chair, wincing as my aching muscles protested.Ronan looked up from his breakfast.“Something wrong, trouble?”“Only every part of my body.”“Excellent. Means yesterday's training worked.”“I preferred my muscles when they didn't have opinions.”Mara placed a cup of tea beside me.“You did well yesterday, sweetheart.”I smiled.Reaching that woodland marker before being caught had felt wonderful. For once, I'd succeeded because I'd stopped panicking and started thinking.“And today we'll do even better,” Luna said.“You're suspiciously cheerful.”“Someone has to be.”I nearly laughed into my tea.Ronan studied me.“Your wolf talking?”“Yes. Unfortunately, she's developing your sense of humour.”“Intelligence runs in good company.”“Then she must have learned it from Mara.”Mara burst out laughing.Ronan pressed a hand against his chest.“Cruel girl. After e

  • The Rise of the Rejected Luna    CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR – THE WILL TO KEEP GOING

LYRABy the third morning, I had discovered two things about training at Ronan's compound. My muscles could ache in places I hadn't known existed and Vera apparently considered suffering an excellent way to begin the day.I stood outside the kitchen, one hand pressed against my aching thigh, wondering whether I could convince everyone I'd developed a mysterious illness overnight.Unfortunately, Mara opened the door before I could escape."You're walking strangely.""I'm walking perfectly well.""You look like an old woman trying to climb a mountain.""Then perhaps you should let this old woman go back to bed."Mara laughed and handed me a cup of tea."Drink that. Ronan's waiting."I glanced towards the kitchen, where Ronan happily spread jam across a piece of toast."Does he ever suffer?""Constantly," Mara replied. "Mostly when someone refuses to admire him."Ronan looked up."I can hear you both.""Good," I called. "Then you can hear me asking for a day off.""Request denied."I si

LYRAI woke to someone knocking on my bedroom door. For a moment I lay there staring at the unfamiliar ceiling, wondering why the morning light looked different. Then I remembered where I was, and the faint smell of pine drifting through the open window reminded me of the mountains surrounding Ronan's house. The knocking came again."Lyra, are you awake?"I recognised Mara's voice."I am now.""Good. Ronan wants you downstairs in twenty minutes."I rolled onto my back and groaned."Does that man ever sleep?""Unfortunately. I was hoping he'd forgotten how."Despite myself, I laughed."Tell him I'll be down.""Don't make me come back up here."I heard her footsteps retreating, followed by Ronan's voice somewhere downstairs."I heard that, Mara!""Then perhaps you should stop listening outside people's doors!"I smiled and buried my face in the pillow. Living with those two was going to be an experience.Twenty minutes later, I entered the kitchen to find Ronan standing by the table ho
