The King is Dead

The words echoed through Seraphina's mind long after the messenger had spoken them.

The King is dead.

The capital gates loomed before her, but she barely saw them.

Killian was dead.

The man she had loved.

The man who had broken her heart.

The man she had hated.

The man she had never truly stopped loving.

Gone.

Aiden tugged gently on her sleeve.

"Mama?"

His small voice cut through the storm raging inside her.

She looked down.

The boy's bright eyes were filled with concern.

"Are you okay?"

The question nearly broke her.

How could she explain grief for a man Aiden had never known?

How could she explain mourning someone she had spent five years trying to forget?

She forced a smile.

"I'm fine."

Aiden frowned.

"No, you're not."

The honesty of children was a dangerous thing.

Before Seraphina could answer, Kael moved his horse closer.

"We should keep moving."

The rider who had delivered the news nodded.

"The Queen Mother is expecting you."

The Queen Mother.

Evangeline.

A woman Seraphina had once admired.

A woman who had treated her like a daughter before everything fell apart.

A woman she had not seen in five years.

Seraphina straightened.

Whatever emotions threatened to consume her would have to wait.

There was still a kingdom in crisis.

And somehow she had been dragged into the center of it.

Again.

---

The city streets were eerily quiet.

People filled the roads.

Thousands of them.

Yet no one spoke above a whisper.

Black banners hung from every building.

Black ribbons adorned every doorway.

Even the merchants had closed their stalls.

The kingdom was mourning.

As Seraphina rode through the streets, heads turned.

Recognition spread quickly.

Shock.

Disbelief.

Curiosity.

The whispers followed her.

"Lady Seraphina..."

"She's alive."

"The King's rejected mate."

"After all these years..."

Aiden looked around nervously.

"Why are they staring at us?"

Seraphina squeezed his hand.

"Because people are curious."

The answer satisfied him only slightly.

As they approached the palace, the crowd grew larger.

Then something unexpected happened.

An elderly woman stepped forward.

Before the guards could stop her, she bowed deeply.

"My Lady."

The crowd fell silent.

Seraphina froze.

The woman lifted tear-filled eyes.

"We never believed the lies."

A murmur swept through the gathered citizens.

Another person stepped forward.

Then another.

And another.

One by one, people bowed.

Respectfully.

Silently.

Seraphina stared in shock.

Five years ago, she had left this city in disgrace.

Now the people were welcoming her home.

Tears burned her eyes.

She blinked them away.

This was neither the time nor the place.

But she would never forget it.

---

The palace was exactly as she remembered.

Marble floors.

Golden chandeliers.

Towering columns.

Luxury and power woven into every stone.

Yet something felt wrong.

The palace felt hollow.

Like its heart had stopped beating.

Servants moved quietly.

Guards spoke in hushed voices.

Everyone looked exhausted.

Afraid.

The rider led them through a series of corridors.

Eventually they stopped before enormous double doors.

The Royal Chamber.

Seraphina's stomach twisted.

The doors opened.

And there she stood.

Queen Mother Evangeline Blackthorn.

Time had touched her gently.

Her silver hair was pinned elegantly atop her head.

Her posture remained regal.

Yet grief lined her face.

For a moment neither woman moved.

Five years of silence stretched between them.

Then Evangeline crossed the room.

And pulled Seraphina into her arms.

The gesture was so unexpected that Seraphina froze.

"My child."

The Queen Mother's voice trembled.

"My precious child."

The tears Seraphina had fought finally escaped.

For years she had imagined anger.

Accusations.

Resentment.

Not this.

Never this.

Evangeline held her tightly.

"As the Moon Goddess is my witness, I thought I would never see you again."

Seraphina swallowed hard.

"Neither did I."

When they finally stepped apart, Evangeline noticed Aiden.

The Queen Mother's eyes widened.

For one dangerous moment, everything else disappeared.

The room.

The grief.

The kingdom.

All of it.

Because she was staring at the child.

At his eyes.

Killian's eyes.

Aiden shifted shyly behind Seraphina.

"Hello."

Evangeline's breath caught.

The resemblance was impossible to miss.

Seraphina saw realization dawn instantly.

Saw the pieces fall into place.

Saw the truth hit her.

The Queen Mother's hand trembled.

"My gods..."

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Aiden frowned.

"Mama?"

Seraphina stepped forward protectively.

But Evangeline wasn't looking at her anymore.

She was looking at the boy.

At her grandson.

At the future heir.

Slowly, tears filled her eyes.

And then, to Seraphina's complete shock, the Queen Mother dropped to her knees.

Before Aiden.

The entire room gasped.

Guards stared.

Servants froze.

No one could believe what they were seeing.

A queen kneeling before a child.

Aiden looked horrified.

"You fell."

The innocent comment nearly made Evangeline laugh through her tears.

"No, sweetheart."

Her voice cracked.

"I didn't fall."

She reached out carefully.

As though afraid he might disappear.

For five years she had mourned the possibility of never having grandchildren.

And now one stood before her.

Alive.

Healthy.

Perfect.

The Queen Mother looked up at Seraphina.

"You should have told me."

Pain flashed across Seraphina's face.

"I didn't trust anyone."

The answer hurt because it was true.

Evangeline nodded sadly.

"I know."

A heavy silence followed.

Then the palace doors burst open.

A man rushed inside.

Tall.

Handsome.

Dressed in noble clothing.

His face was pale with panic.

"My Queen!"

He stopped abruptly when he saw Seraphina.

Shock flashed across his features.

Then something darker.

Something calculating.

His eyes drifted to Aiden.

And lingered.

Too long.

Seraphina immediately disliked him.

The Queen Mother's expression hardened.

"Lord Cassius."

The name sent a chill down Seraphina's spine.

So this was the man Killian had warned her about.

Cassius recovered quickly.

A polished smile appeared.

"Lady Seraphina."

His voice was smooth.

Almost charming.

"I had heard rumors of your return."

Seraphina said nothing.

Cassius' gaze shifted once more toward Aiden.

Interest flickered in his eyes.

Dangerous interest.

Then he bowed.

"The Council has gathered."

The Queen Mother frowned.

"Already?"

"They insist."

Cassius spread his hands.

"The throne cannot remain empty."

A cold silence filled the room.

Seraphina felt it immediately.

The hidden meaning behind the words.

The throne cannot remain empty.

Not grief.

Not mourning.

Politics.

Power.

Opportunity.

Cassius wanted something.

And he wanted it quickly.

The Queen Mother rose slowly.

"The King has been dead less than a day."

"The kingdom requires leadership."

His tone remained respectful.

But his eyes betrayed impatience.

For a brief moment, Seraphina saw it.

Ambition.

Raw and hungry.

The expression vanished almost instantly.

But it was enough.

Killian had been right.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Cassius bowed again.

"The Council awaits your decision."

When he left, the room felt colder.

The Queen Mother turned toward Seraphina.

Fear filled her eyes.

Not for herself.

For Aiden.

For the kingdom.

For the future.

Finally, she spoke the words neither of them wanted to hear.

"If Cassius discovers who Aiden truly is..."

She couldn't finish.

She didn't need to.

Because everyone in the room already understood.

The hidden heir would become a target.

And somewhere within the palace walls, Lord Cassius was already beginning to suspect.

Far away, beneath the palace itself, in forgotten tunnels buried deep underground, a pair of silver eyes suddenly opened.

A heartbeat echoed through the darkness.

Slow.

Weak.

But unmistakably alive.

And Alpha King Killian Blackthorn took his first breath.
