As nightfall descends, we dress and head to Amber’s house for Mer’s first shift. After our third round, Liam and I had marked each other, finally sealing our mate bond, making everything official. Even now, I can feel the new bite mark on my neck tingling, a constant reminder of what we now share.
“Are you nervous?” Liam asked, his voice soft as we walked side by side.
I let out a bitter laugh. “About coming out to my entire family and friends, or the possibility that one of my best friends could die tonight? Yeah, a huge yes to both.”
Liam stops walking and pulls me into an embrace, his arms wrapping around me like he’s trying to shield me from everything. “Everything will be alright,” he murmured. “You’ll see.”
We held each other for a long moment, his warmth steadying me, but eventually, we parted and continued walking toward Amber’s house. When we arrive, the wooded area behind her home is already filled with the others - Mer, Ethan, Dylan, Grace. They’re all waiting, their faces tense with anticipation.
As soon as we step into the clearing, Mer’s voice rings out. “Where have you been? I would have murdered you if you weren’t here in time!”
“Sorry, sorry,” I said, holding up my hands. “I’m here.”
Ethan steps forward, his eyes narrowing slightly as they land on Liam. “Nathaniel, why did you bring Liam? This is supposed to be high-ranking members only.”
I swallowed hard, feeling the tension knotting in my stomach. It’s now or never. “He is a high-ranking member,” I manage, my voice tight. “He’s been my mate for a long time, and as of today, he’s my fiancé.”
For a second, everything freezes. The silence is deafening, and I can practically hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears.
“Oh my god, congratulations!” Mer squealed, breaking the tension as she leaped toward me, wrapping her arms around my neck. Her excitement is contagious, and soon, Grace follows suit, hugging me, then Liam. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Dylan patting Liam’s shoulder, chuckling softly.
But none of that matters. All I can focus on is Ethan - his face frozen in place, his eyes locked on mine. My breath catches in my throat. I’ve never seen him look so hurt.
He walked toward me, each step deliberate, his eyes never leaving mine.
“Ethan, I know I’m your Beta, but…” I started, my voice weak, but he cut me off before I could even finish.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” His voice is quiet, but the hurt rolling off him is palpable, like a wave crashing over me.
“I… I don’t know,” I admit, my words faltering. “I was afraid you wouldn’t want a gay Beta.”
His jaw tightens, and the silence that follows is suffocating. “Nathaniel, we grew up as brothers. I’ve always counted you as one. So it hurts to know you didn’t trust me the same way.”
“Ethan…” I trailed off, my voice barely a whisper.
“Stop,” he said, his tone final. “We’ll deal with this later. If we don’t start soon, Rose will have to wait another month, and we can’t risk that.”
Without another word, he turns and walks toward the group. The weight of the moment crushes me, and I feel like I’ve let him down in the worst possible way.
Ethan approached Liam next, his expression shifting slightly. “Liam, congratulations on your engagement. I know you’ll be a great Beta partner, and I’ll always be here to guide you.”
Liam nods, his voice barely above a whisper. “Thank you.”
With that, Ethan storms off toward Amber’s house, leaving me standing there, the weight of our fractured bond hanging in the air like a cloud. Mer, sensing the tension, runs after him.
