POV: Melina

The note had four words on it.

Report to my office.

No please. No time suggestion. No signature...just the Howlington seal pressed into the bottom corner like that was explanation enough. Like anyone in this building would need clarification about whose office they were being summoned to.

Melina stared at it for a full minute.

Then she put it down, finished making the bed she'd been making, and told herself it was fine.

It wasn't fine.

She'd managed two days in this place without a

  • The Royal Alphas’ Captive Maid   Chapter 23: The Letter

POV: MelinaIt was waiting on her bed when she got back from her shift.A white envelope with the hospital's name printed in the top left corner. Someone from admin must have slipped it under her door while she was working. She stood in the doorway and looked at it for a moment before she went inside and closed the door and picked it up.She didn't open it immediately. She sat on the edge of the bed with it in her hands and looked at her mother's file number printed across the front and just held it. The envelope was thin. Single page inside, maybe two. She'd gotten enough of these to know that the thin ones were never good news. Good news came in thick envelopes....treatment plans, recovery schedules, follow-up appointments. Things that required pages. This was thin. She opened it.She read it twice. The first time the words moved through her without landing properly. Medical language doing what medical language did....building distance between the information and the person receivin

  • The Royal Alphas’ Captive Maid   Chapter 23: I Know Her Father

"But," Aiden said.Edmund looked at him. "But she pulled you in. All three of you. Without knowing she was doing it." He set his mug down. "Which means whatever she is....whatever is in her blood, her father's line, her mother's exposure....she is not entirely ordinary. Whatever that means for the bond, I don't know yet.""You don't know yet," Alaric said."I'm old," Edmund said. "Not omniscient."Archer turned from the window. "What about The Vigil."Edmund's expression shifted."They've been watching her," he said. "The same way they watched her father. They know she's in your estate." He paused. "They don't know why yet. When they find out...""They'll come for her," Alaric said."Yes.""On our grounds.""That's never stopped them before."The fire crackled. Outside Edmund's garden was completely still, the morning light coming through the window across the floor.Alaric looked at his grandfather."The plant," he said. "She came here to steal it.""Yes.""She's not going to steal i

  • The Royal Alphas’ Captive Maid   Chapter 14: Grandfather

POV: AlaricEdmund opened the door before they knocked. He was already standing there when they came up the path....all three of them, Archer still pulling his jacket on, Aiden with his hands in his pockets....and he looked at them the way he always looked at them. Like he'd been expecting them for considerably longer than just this morning."You're early," he said."You said first thing," Alaric said."I did." Edmund stepped back from the door. "Come in."The house was the same as it always was.Books on every surface. A fire going despite the season. The smell of old wood and tea and something underneath that Alaric had never been able to name but had associated with this place his entire life. Edmund moved through it ahead of them toward the sitting room and they followed in the particular way they'd followed him since they were children....single file, quiet, aware that they were about to be told something significant.Edmund sat in his chair. They sat across from him.He looked a

  • The Royal Alphas’ Captive Maid   Chapter 21: Come Closer

POV: MelinaHis office was on the second floor. She knew because she'd memorized the estate layout her first day. Every room. Every corridor. Every door and what was behind it.Knowing where it was and walking into it were two different things. She knocked."Come in."She pushed the door open.He was at his desk. Papers spread in front of him, pen in hand, reading something with the focused attention of a man who ran things and knew it. He didn't look up immediately. She stood just inside the door and waited. He kept writing. She stood just inside the room with her hands at her sides and waited. The office smelled like him. That was the first problem. Warm and clean and underneath it something that her body had apparently decided was its new favorite thing and she had no say in the matter. He set his pen down.Looked up."Come here," he said. She walked to the desk.He looked at her for a moment. Something moved through his eyes that she couldn't read."Closer," he said. She stepped c

  • The Royal Alphas’ Captive Maid   Chapter 20: Sore

POV: MelinaShe dropped a pillowcase.Just let it fall right out of her hands onto the floor and stood there looking at it for a moment before she bent down and picked it up.Focus.She shook it out. Smoothed it over the pillow. Moved to the next one.Her hands were fine. Her hands were completely fine. The problem was everything below her hands...the persistent low ache in her thighs, the tenderness she kept noticing every time she shifted her weight, the way her lower back pulled when she bent over. All of it. Still there. Still present. Still refusing to let her forget. It was a dream. She knew it was a dream. Her body apparently hadn't gotten that memo. She finished the bed. Moved to the bathroom. Wiped down the sink, the counter, the mirror. Her reflection looked back at her the same way it had this morning....blank, unremarkable, fine and she looked away first. She moved her cart to the next room.By the third room she'd knocked over her spray bottle, forgotten what she'd alread

  • The Royal Alphas’ Captive Maid   Chapter 19: What the hell is she?

"I know that.""If she'd done it deliberately....if she knew how to do it....that would be one thing. A weapon she was using. But she didn't know. Which means she pulled three Alpha wolves into her subconscious without any training, without any intention, without any awareness that it was even possible." He pressed his fingers against his eyes. "What the hell is she?"The question sat in the room.Alaric said nothing for a long moment. He was looking at the wall with the particular quality of focus that meant he was working through something."She smelled the same," he said finally.Archer looked at him. "What?""In the dream. Her scent." He didn't look away from the wall. "It was identical to how she smells when she walks past me in the corridor. Exactly identical.""Dreams don't have scent," Aiden said slowly."No," Alaric said. "They don't."Another silence.Longer this time.Archer dragged a hand through his hair. "Okay. So what do we do."Alaric stood up."I'm calling grandfather
