With the Southern envoy speeding back toward the Sun-Scarred Deserts, the high mountain passes of the North were immediately placed on high alert. Rather than wait passively within the keep, Silas and Aria rode out at dusk toward the highest peak of the Shadowfang range—the Sentinel Mount—where the ancient northern beacons overlooked the entire southern frontier.

A heavy cloak of crisp alpine snow dusted the pine trees as their horses clambered up the winding stone trail. They traveled light, accompanied only by Commander Vane and a small escort of five wolf-riders.

At the summit, the air was sharp and thin, biting against the skin, but neither Silas nor Aria felt the cold. Through the *Sovereign's Tether*, Silas’s internal Alpha heat coursed through Aria’s blood, while her cool High-Arcana stabilized his breath against the high altitude.

"Look down there, storm," Silas growled low, pulling his black warhorse to a stop beside hers at the cliff’s edge. He pointed with his gauntleted hand toward the south.

Far below, where the pine forests gave way to the jagged red canyons of the Sun-Scarred border, tiny points of light flickered in the dusk—the watchfires of Emperor Solon’s frontier garrisons.

Aria dismounted, her boots crunching into the fresh snow. She walked to the edge of the stone overlook, her dark mantle whipping around her legs. The sapphire circlet atop her head pulsed softly, communicating directly with the dormant mountain leyline beneath the rock.

"They aren't preparing for trade, Silas," Aria said, her High-Mage senses probing the distant southern leyline. Her blue eyes narrowed as a cold realization settled in. "Solon’s mages are already siphoning the boundary nodes. They’ve built three siphoning towers right along the red canyons."

Silas dismounted in a single fluid motion, his broad boots hitting the snow with a heavy thud. He stepped beside her, his massive frame blocking the freezing wind as his arm wrapped possessively around her waist.

"So Darius was just a distraction," Silas growled, his golden eyes narrowing into lethal slits as his Alpha aura flared, melting the snow around their boots. "He sent an envoy to demand our consent while his engineers were already digging into our soil."

"It's a subtle bleed," Aria explained, resting her hand flat against an ancient monolith at the peak. "They aren't attacking our cities; they're draining the ambient magic from the southern valleys to fuel their golden foundries. In six months, our southern pastures will turn to dust."

Silas’s hand tightened against her waist, his jaw setting into iron. "Then we don't give them six months."

He turned to Commander Vane, his deep voice carrying the unyielding command of a Sovereign preparing for war.

"Vane, order two iron-clads down to the Southern Gates. Tell Elder Garron to mobilize the vanguard of the Blood Moon pack and establish a forward base at the Red Gorge."

"At once, Sovereign!" Vane pressed his fist to his chest, mounting his horse and galloping back down the trail with the escort to execute the orders.

Alone on the high peak beneath the rising moon, Silas pulled Aria back flush against his chest. His chin rested on her shoulder, his heavy breath warm against her cheek as he looked out over their empire.

"They think because we brought peace, we've grown soft," Silas murmured into her ear, his hand sliding down to lace his fingers securely through hers, the star-gold tether on their wrists glowing with shared, dangerous power.

Aria leaned back into his heat, a calm, confident smile touching her lips as she looked out over the glowing northern landscape.

"Let Solon send his golden armies, Silas," Aria whispered, her sapphire dagger humming at her hip in response to her resolve. "He doesn't know that the North doesn't just defend its borders... it burns anything that tries to steal from it."

Silas let out a dark, low chuckle that vibrated right through her spine, his lips pressing a possessive, lingering kiss against her temple.

"That's my High-Mage," Silas growled. "Tomorrow, we take the vanguard to the Red Gorge."
