Chapter 3

Author: Mohini
It hit me like a bolt of lightning.

That watermelon farm was my grandparents' life's work, built up through a lifetime of hard labor.

The moment Rachael got home, I marched straight up to her.

"You seized my grandparents' watermelon farm?"

She took her time peeling off her wool coat, then settled back against the sofa before she finally spoke.

"That's what fairness looks like. My parents give us two hundred thousand dollars a year. By that same logic, your family should be chipping in something too.

"Once we flatten the farm, we can build a playground there. The baby can play on it once she's born."

Her tone was so light, so breezy, as if flattening the place was nothing worth thinking twice about.

My voice shook. "That farm is the work of their entire lives."

Rachael shot back, "And my parents' money just fell out of the sky, did it?

"A marriage needs equality. Raising a child needs the same. As the baby's great-grandparents, shouldn't they be willing to show a little goodwill too?"

My fists clenched tighter and tighter. I forced the words out anyway.

"You have no right to touch what's theirs."

Rachael didn't answer. Instead, she dialed a number and handed me the phone. A lawyer's voice came through the other end, brisk and businesslike.

"Ms. Decker holds the property deed to that land, and she has every right to change how it's used. All the paperwork is in order. There's nothing to dispute."

Rachael hung up and met my stunned eyes.

"They signed that deed over to me themselves. You haven't forgotten that, have you?"

Then it came back to me, hazy at first. Before I'd married into the Decker family, my grandparents, worried I'd be looked down on, had signed over the only thing of real value they owned, the deed to that land, into her name.

At the time, Rachael had been moved to tears. Now she was flattening the farm to build a playground on it without a second thought.

Thinking of my grandparents out there working that land, year after year, my chest caved in a little more with every second.

"Then I'll buy the farm back."

I pulled the bank card out of my pocket, the one holding every cent I'd saved my whole life for my grandparents' retirement.

I checked the balance. It was empty.

No one but me and Rachael knew the password.

I looked up at her, stunned. "How is this possible?"

Her voice was flat. "I deducted what you owed directly. Otherwise, Sean's books wouldn't balance."

That was when I noticed Sean sitting in the study in my slippers and pajamas, working through some papers.

I gripped the useless card in my hand, but the weight pressing on my chest felt like a mountain.

Just then, my grandparents shuffled in, hunched over, and grabbed my hand with tears in their eyes.

"Dennis, don't put yourself through this for our sake. Come on. Come home with Grandpa."

I nodded, my throat tight.

Rachael suddenly stepped in front of me, her brow furrowed deep.

"Where do you think you're going?"

I looked up at her, my voice steady. "I've decided. I'm getting a divorce, and I'm going home with them."

I pulled out the printed divorce agreement and handed it to her.

"Once you've signed it, I'll come by and pick it up," I said, my tone calm.

The moment she took the agreement, Rachael said nothing. Her face turned unnaturally dark.

I took my grandparents by the hand. "Let's go."

We hadn't gone two steps before three tall bodyguards in black blocked the doorway.

Behind us, Rachael's voice rang out, cold and merciless.

"You want a divorce? Then have your grandfather take off the clothes he's wearing and give them back to me.

"Or did I not buy that outfit myself?"

"Dennis!" Rachael cried out my name from behind. I turned and walked away without looking back. Before the court date, I did everything I could to avoid Rachael. Her influence in Markusson City ran deep, and I didn't want her affecting the case in any way.I never expected the one who'd show up at my door instead would be Sean. The second the door opened, he lunged at me like a man possessed."Dennis! How dare you take me to court?"Ms. Decker's just angry with me right now. She's not really going to abandon me. You're the one who's finished!"Before he'd even finished the sentence, I drove my fist straight into his face.He clutched his cheek in shock, his mouth hanging open."You... you hit me?"I looked at him, perfectly calm."Why wouldn't I hit you? If you hadn't been stirring up trouble behind the scenes, Rachael never would have forced my grandfather to strip naked. Did you really think you'd get away with it?"I used to think he was nothing more than Rachael's pamp

The moment I was off the operating table, I dragged my weakened body out of the hospital. The place was full of people Rachael knew. It would take her minutes to track me down. But I never wanted to see her again.I clutched the pocket watch my grandparents had left me. My chest felt as if a knife had gone through it. They had been the only family I had left in this world. And now they were both gone.Worse, it was because I'd chosen the wrong person to marry in the first place that they'd paid the price for it.Once I found somewhere to settle, I contacted a lawyer, Brent Chayet, and filed a lawsuit against Rachael and Sean."Brent, I have the security footage from that day. It'll prove the two of them worked together to drive my grandfather to suicide and frighten my grandmother into a fatal heart attack."And while we're at it, can I use this to get a divorce from Rachael?"Brent nodded."That's right. If the evidence holds up, the court will very likely grant the divorce."

Rachael felt like she'd been struck by lightning."What... what did you just say?"When she stumbled into the crematorium, all she saw were two boxes of ashes set out before her.[Diane Levin, Jacob Levin]Those were the names of Dennis's grandparents."How could this happen..."The attendant beside her sighed."The old man died by his own hand. The old woman had a heart attack and couldn't be saved."Rachael staggered back a step, unable to believe it.Dennis's grandparents had been the only family he had left in this world. And they'd both been driven to their deaths over a set of clothes she had made Dennis's grandfather take off.Her mind went hazy. She called Dennis immediately. All that answered her was a flat, mechanical voice.[The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later.]That was when it finally hit her. Dennis was really gone."Why..."She carried the two boxes of ashes home, hollow, like she was moving through the motions of som

Rachael froze at the front door. The mansion beyond it was heavy with a funeral hush, white flowers and mourning decorations hung everywhere."Who decorated the house like this? Isn't anyone worried about the bad luck?"A maid rushed over, stammering."Sir's grandparents... passed away here. According to custom, this is how it's supposed to be arranged...""What?" Rachael's voice shot up sharply. "How could they have just died, out of the blue?"The maid laid out exactly what had happened. Rachael's brow drew tight."That's impossible. How does someone kill himself over a set of clothes? They weren't children."Where's Dennis? I'll ask him myself."The maid shook her head and said nothing.Rachael didn't have the patience to press further. She went straight upstairs instead."Dennis, your whole family keeps losing whatever manners they had left. First it's threatening divorce, now it's faking your death just to fool me."When she pushed open the bedroom door, what she saw s

My steps froze. I turned back, unable to believe what I'd heard."You want an old man to... take off his clothes?"The maids and bodyguards in the house gathered around, watching like it was a show.Rachael's gaze flickered away for a second, then she cleared her throat."You're the one who asked for a divorce. And if we're divorcing, every asset needs to be settled first. Let's start with the clothes on your grandfather's back."That outfit had been Rachael's gift to my grandfather for his eightieth birthday. Worth forty thousand dollars. When he'd first heard the price, he'd hidden it away in a closet, never able to bring himself to wear something so expensive. Today was the first time he'd put it on, just to come pick me up from the Decker estate. My grandfather flinched and shrank back behind me. He didn't understand the family's so-called rules, but he understood exactly what Rachael meant. He spoke up, hesitant and timid. "How about... I go into a bedroom and take it o
