Chapter 2

Author: Bright Lights
"Did you have fun?"

I froze for a second, then quickly nodded.

"Yeah, I did. Though my kind of fun is just strength in numbers. It can't compare to having your beloved Ms. Rogers by your side."

Something in my answer must have displeased John, because the coldness around him deepened instantly.

In the past, the moment I saw that expression, I would have rushed over to comfort him, carefully trying to cheer him up.

However, now, I only looked at him in confusion.

So he came all the way here just to ask whether I was having fun?

Puzzled, I reached out and casually squeezed a man's abs again.

John suddenly moved, taking a few steps toward me before saying coldly, "There are reporters outside the club. We need to cooperate for appearances."

Realization hit me immediately.

No wonder he had stopped accompanying Claire. So it was because the media were outside.

Of course. To avoid the paparazzi catching anything inappropriate and causing public backlash that might affect the cooperation between the Dyke and West families, he had no choice but to come find me.

Since it involved business, I did not argue. I got up cleanly and flashed those handsome men a regretful smile.

"Sorry, everyone. I have something to deal with. Next time we can–"

Before I could finish the word 'meet,' John grabbed my wrist and dragged me straight out of the private room.

Faced with his complete lack of gentleness toward women, all I could do was purse my lips in silent irritation.

Once outside the club, I looked around.

Forget reporters. There was not even another person in sight.

I raised a brow. "Where are the reporters?"

John ignored the question. After the valet brought the car over, he opened the passenger door for me like a perfect gentleman and guided me inside.

His movements were smooth and natural, as though we were truly a loving couple.

But I knew better.

He was only acting.

Since he kept refusing to say where the media were hiding, I stopped asking. He would not be so bored as to lie to me about something like this. The reporters were probably lurking in some corner nearby.

After John got into the car, it suddenly hit me.

This was the first time since our arranged marriage half a year ago that we had ever been alone together.

If this had been my previous life, I would have treasured an opportunity like this. I would have gone out of my way to show my best side, hoping to move his heart.

But now, I could not even be bothered.

As soon as the car started moving, the alcohol hit me properly. Without saying another word, I leaned back against the seat and fell asleep.

By the time I woke up again, we had already arrived at Moonlake Villa.

Moonlake Villa was our marital home, though I had always been the only one living there.

John stayed in a luxury apartment near Dyke Group headquarters instead, conveniently next door to Claire.

Not expecting him to keep up the gentleman act and open the door for me, I pushed it open myself and lightly hopped out of the car.

After taking only a couple of steps, though, I realized John had gotten out as well.

I could not help staring at him in surprise.

"John, you're not staying at the apartment tonight?"

He glanced at me indifferently without answering and continued walking toward the villa.

Since the house was technically shared marital property, there was not much I could say. I simply followed behind him.

The moment we entered, I was about to call for the housekeeper, Mrs. Morgan, to make me some soup to combat the hangover when John interrupted me.

"It's late. Don't wake anyone up. I'll make it for you."

He rolled up his sleeves and walked into the kitchen.

Watching his back as he busied himself there, my chest tightened slightly.

John was always like this.

He clearly did not love me, yet in private he would always do these strangely gentle things.

Like making me soup tonight.

Like holding my hand during our wedding ceremony and telling me not to be nervous.

And because of moments like these, the me from my previous life had mistakenly believed we could become a normal married couple someday.

I owe you far too much. The assistant led him into the office. The moment he saw me, undisguised admiration flashed across his eyes.Ever since being given a second chance at life, I had changed a great deal. I was no longer the naive and sheltered eldest daughter of the West family.Over the years, I had become decisive and ruthless in business. The softness I once carried had long since faded, replaced by a confidence that made me stand out wherever I went.John and I sat across from each other. When he finally spoke, his voice was slightly hoarse."Naomi, thank you for the evidence."I answered calmly, "No need to thank me. I'm only returning the favor for all the times you secretly helped the West family before."But John shook his head stubbornly."No, I still have to thank you. You don't know this, but back then, Claire's parents killed my parents to seize control of the Dyke Group. Then they pretended to be kind and took me into their home."For years, they used my age as an excuse to keep cont

The divorce went through quickly. The moment I picked up the pen and signed my name, the marriage alliance between John and me officially came to an end.As we walked out of the courthouse, John called out to me, like he wanted to say something. But before he could speak, Claire fluttered over to him like a brightly colored butterfly and threw herself into his arms.I did not care what he had wanted to say anyway. I had no interest in watching them act affectionate in front of me, so I got into my car and drove away. After the divorce, I poured all my energy into West Corporation. With the experience from my previous life, I successfully led the company into several new energy projects. The investments I had persuaded my parents to make in the sector earlier had now become the driving force behind West Corporation's growth. In less than six months, both domestic and overseas sales surpassed one hundred million. By the time I woke up, John was already gone from the villa. The only sign he had been there was the breakfast laid out neatly on the dining table.Mrs. Morgan walked over with a smile."You're awake, Mrs. Dyke? Mr. Dyke made this breakfast himself. Would you like to eat? I can heat it up for you."I looked at the breakfast in surprise.Across both my lifetimes, this was the first time I had ever known John could cook. But the dream from last night still lingered in my mind, leaving me with no appetite at all."No need. Just warm me a glass of milk."After finishing the milk, I drove to West Corporation for work. Not long after the car pulled onto the road, the steering wheel suddenly locked up.The vehicle lurched out of control like a wild horse, hurtling straight toward the roadside barrier.I instinctively slammed on the brakes. They had failed too.Bang! The impact exploded through the car as it crashed violently into the guardrail. I followed the direction of his finger and saw John slumped over the booth sofa. The collar of his black shirt had been tugged loose, and he was still absentmindedly clutching a wine glass in one hand.I walked over and tapped him on the shoulder."John, wake up. We're going home."He slowly lifted his head, eyes unfocused. Honestly, I doubted he could even tell who had come to pick him up.Because the first thing he said was, pitifully, "Honey… didn't you already leave me? Then why did you come back?"Honey? He probably meant Claire. He really was drunk out of his mind, to the point he could not even recognize me.I had no intention of pretending to be Claire. I simply stayed silent and helped him up. With the assistance of his friend, we finally managed to shove him into the passenger seat.Just as I was about to close the car door, John suddenly reached out and hooked a finger into the corner of my clothes.I looked down at him. His eyelashes were long, casting faint shado

For the first time, I realized I could not understand John at all.Back when I proudly called myself Mrs. Dyke and wanted us to act like a real married couple, he used the agreement from our arranged marriage against me: aside from public appearances, neither of us was allowed to interfere in the other's private life. In my previous life, he had even gone so far as to destroy my entire family just to avenge Claire. Now that I finally understood what this marriage really was, and where I stood in it, I only wanted the partnership between our families to proceed smoothly. Yet somehow, he was angry again, accusing me of failing in my duties as a wife.No matter what I chose, it was never what John wanted.I shoved him away hard, forcing distance between us, then looked at him coldly."John, we made things very clear before this marriage. Other than necessary public occasions, we stay out of each other's private lives. If I hadn't been worried about the media stirring up trouble and a
