Chapter 3

Author: Moot Point
The wedding? I could hardly believe Mia still thought I'd marry her. In her dreams.

I was already looking forward to the day she found out Evermont Group had gone bankrupt. I wanted to see the look on her face when she finally realized what she'd lost.

After selling the house, I started thinking about the employees who worked at Evermont Group. I'd personally recruited most of the company's core technical talent and spent years building the team from the ground up.

Now that I was leaving, I figured the least I could do was give them a choice about whether they wanted to come with me.

The conversation went more smoothly than I'd expected. More than half the employees were willing to leave with me, and once they made up their minds, the resignations started coming in one after another.

By the end of it, nearly 100 employees had walked away from Evermont Group.

Mia had been dreaming about taking Evermont Group public. Now, with the company's key talent gone and my investment pulled, that dream was nothing more than a fantasy.

Some of my belongings were still in my office, so I went back to get them. But before I could reach the door, I heard voices coming from inside.

"Mia, it's okay. Come on. Run away with me one more time today. Last time, Adrian managed to clean up the mess after we ran off from the wedding. I'm sure he can handle it again."

Mia hesitated for a moment before finally giving in.

"Fine. I'll run away with you again. Besides, that lovesick idiot Adrian would forgive me no matter how many times I ran away from my own wedding."

I stopped in my tracks.

The two of them were actually planning to run away from the wedding again.

I couldn't believe it. She really thought I'd still be waiting around for her to marry me today.

I pushed the door open.

Mia visibly panicked when she saw me.

"When did you get here? You didn't hear anything just now, did you?"

I didn't even bother looking at her.

"I'm just here to get my things. Where's my grandfather's photo?"

It was a picture of the three of us taken when Mia and I got engaged. After Grandpa passed away, only a few of his things were left behind, and every single one of them was precious to me.

Ethan casually tapped the ash from his cigarette.

"Adrian, you mean this photo?"

My heart dropped when I saw it.

He had been using Grandpa's picture as an ashtray.

Before I could react, a glowing ember fell onto the photograph. The corner caught fire, and the flames quickly spread across the paper. I rushed forward, but by the time I got there, Grandpa's face had already been burned away.

I grabbed Ethan by the collar, my eyes burning with rage.

"That's one of the few photos I have of Grandpa! Ethan, you destroyed the last thing I had to remember him by!"

Ethan sneered.

"Something to remember Grandpa by? You just wanted to use him to guilt Mia into marrying you sooner, didn't you? You and your grandfather were always using guilt to pressure her. It's disgusting!"

Grandpa had genuinely cared about Mia. He had even poured his own resources into helping her build Evermont Group.

Hearing Ethan reduce Grandpa's kindness to nothing more than emotional blackmail was more than I could take.

He'd dared to mock Grandpa's sincere intentions.

I'd had enough. I swung my fist at him.

"How dare you talk about Grandpa like that?"

My punch sent Ethan crashing to the floor. I raised my fist to hit him again, but Mia grabbed my wrist.

"Enough! It's just a photograph! Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it?" she screamed. "Let Ethan go! Or I swear, I'm calling off this wedding!"

Before I could say another word, she slapped me hard across the left cheek.

I staggered backward several steps and slammed into the sharp corner of the desk. A dull pain shot through me as I struggled to catch my breath.

I stared at Mia in disbelief.

She stood protectively in front of Ethan, glaring at me with open hatred.

"Adrian, you'll pay for what you did today! Before the day ends, I'll make you the laughingstock of the entire city!"

I watched as Mia and Ethan walked away, then smiled to myself.

She thought that running away from our wedding yet again would turn me into the laughingstock of the entire city. What she didn't realize was that I had never intended to go through with the wedding in the first place.

With the 50 million dollars I'd pulled from Evermont Group and the company's core technical team now on my side, I returned to my own company.

As for who would end up being the laughingstock of the entire city, we'd just have to wait and see.

…

Third-Person POV

Mia ran away from her wedding again.

She and Ethan spent the entire night together, but this time, not a single message came from Adrian. The wedding livestream never started either.

That's when it finally hit her—she'd gone too far this time.

She hurried back to the house Adrian had bought for the two of them, intending to swallow her pride and apologize.

But the moment she arrived, she discovered that the house had already been sold to someone else.

Panic immediately set in.

She called her assistant, Elliot Harper, and demanded to know where Adrian had gone. Elliot's voice trembled on the other end of the line.

"Ms. Lawson, the 50-million-dollar investment in the company was just withdrawn! And Adrian just took more than a hundred of our core technical employees with him. Now the rest of our shareholders are pulling out too. Evermont Group is on the verge of bankruptcy and liquidation!"

"You can call him right now and ask him what he's doing."As far as I knew, once my stepmother learned that all of the family's assets and businesses had been transferred to me, she'd decided to take advantage of the fact that the change in Ethan's status as heir had never been publicly announced. She wanted to find him a wealthy woman from a respectable family so he could live comfortably for the rest of his life. These days, Ethan had been busy going on blind dates and trying to win over wealthy women.Mia immediately called him, but he didn't answer. Panic flashed across her face, and her eyes turned red as she snapped at me, "Ethan promised he'd marry me. You must be behind this somehow! He's just busy right now. He'll answer any minute!" Eventually, Ethan picked up, his voice already filled with impatience. "What is it? I'm busy over here!" Mia choked back a sob and was just about to speak when a woman's sultry voice drifted through the phone. The sound of their heav

Those employees were willing to testify on my behalf as well. I'd anticipated that Mia might try to use my criminal record against me someday, which was why I'd had Claire record statements from the employees years ago. The moment Mia tried to cause trouble, I'd have everything I needed to expose the truth and make sure she paid for what she'd done. William went through the evidence carefully before looking at Mia with open disdain. "And you have the nerve to accuse Mr. Sterling of using underhanded tactics? You actually framed the very person who once took the blame for you and went to prison in your place? Is this really all you've got?"It was obvious that William's attitude had completely shifted in my favor. I pulled out another folder. This one contained background information on the Lawson family. This time, I wasn't going to give Mia any chance to turn the situation around. "Mr. Wallace, these are records on Mia's parents. They've been involved in loan sharking and

William Wallace of Harland Group was the last potential business partner I needed to win over.He was based in Kingsley, and the connections and influence he had behind him were not to be underestimated. My IPO application was at a critical stage, and securing his investment could make all the difference. If we could get William on board, my application would have a much better chance of being approved. I'd arranged to meet him at Harland Group's office, with Claire accompanying me. On the way there, she briefed me on the other companies competing for William's investment. "Mr. Sterling, it looks like Evermont Group is competing for this opportunity too. Could that put us at a disadvantage?"I frowned. "It wouldn't be surprising if Mia wanted a meeting with Mr. Wallace. Everyone knows that securing his investment could bring in tens of millions in funding. There's no way she'd willingly give up on Evermont Group while there's still a chance to save it." I paused, considerin

"Mia, is that any way to treat your fiance? Don't forget why we're here!"Mia shot me an irritated glare, but after a moment, she reluctantly softened her tone. "Fine. Adrian, I was wrong to run away before the wedding. I'm sorry. But you didn't have to be so ruthless and destroy my company. I realize now that I can't make it without you, so stop being angry with me. "My parents are here to discuss our marriage again, so hurry up and invite them inside!" Her commanding tone made my blood boil. I let out a cold laugh. "Do I owe your family something? One minute, you say we're getting married, and the next, you change your mind, and suddenly we're not. Now that you need me, you expect me to welcome you back without a word? Do you really think everything happens on your terms?"Mia's face darkened. "Adrian, don't push your luck!" "There's something I don't understand," I said, staring at her. "Is this how you and your family ask someone for help? You've already run away with

Once I presented the proof, the people watching the livestream quickly changed their tune."So the embezzlement accusation was a lie after all! Judging by the way Mia treats Adrian, I feel like he's the one who was mistreated. There has to be more to this story! I believe Adrian Sterling is innocent!"I remained completely expressionless. "When did I poach them? They chose to leave with me."I looked directly at Mia. "When you let Ethan take over as deputy CEO and stood by while he ran the company however he pleased, did you ever stop to think that the people who worked under me might not want to stay?"Mia's expression shifted. "When did I ever tell you to give your position to Ethan? You gave it to him yourself because you felt sorry for him."She knew that if I managed to turn things around now, she would be finished. There was no way she'd admit to anything that might make her look bad in front of the cameras. But I had plenty of ways to show everyone exactly what she was

Adrian's POVAfter filing the application to take my company public, I held a press conference to finally address the negative rumors that had been circulating online. When Mia first accused me of abusing her, I deliberately chose not to defend myself. At the time, I was focused on getting my new company ready for its IPO, and the rumors were actually giving me something money couldn't buy—free publicity. They were drawing attention to both the company and me, putting our name in front of the public without me having to spend a dime on advertising. Now that the time was right, I could set the record straight, turn all that attention in my favor, and create even more value for the company. In a strange way, Mia had unknowingly helped me once again. The press conference had barely been underway for a few minutes when Mia barged in. "Adrian Sterling! You really have some nerve holding a press conference here.""You embezzled 50 million dollars from Evermont Group and poached m
