Winona’s POV

I felt frozen in place inside the elevator. Maximus and I were locked in a stare, neither of us willing to look away. Yet even while my eyes were on him, I couldn’t ignore the beautiful woman at the edge of my vision—the same woman I had caught him holding as though he were helping her.

I knew who she was. Who wouldn’t recognize the famous fashion designer, Vivienne Durand? She was every woman’s inspiration.

I swallowed hard, trying to calm the thundering in my chest. “I-I think this isn’t the right time. M-Maybe I’ll just come back another day…” I forced a smile, though it never reached my eyes.

And why not? I was nothing compared to Vivienne. She had built her empire with her own hands, while I had yet to prove anything in my life.

“N-No, don’t leave. S-She was just on her way out,” Maximus interjected, glancing at the woman.

“Y-Yes, I was just leaving. Maximus and I are done with our business…” Her lips curved into a mocking smile. I couldn’t meet her eyes as she stepp

Winona’s POVAs the night deepened, the air on Maximus’s penthouse terrace grew colder. The chill seeped into my bones, and without realizing it, I wrapped my arms around myself. I wondered why I had even thought of wearing a backless, below-the-knee dress tonight.I flinched when something warm brushed my shoulders—a jacket. Looking up, I met Maximus’s serious face, his gaze steady and unwavering as it settled on me.We were already on dessert, yet neither of us had dared to start a conversation. My tongue felt tied, though before I came here, I had so many things I wanted to tell him.“T-Thank you,” I murmured softly. He didn’t respond. Instead, he returned to his chair and sipped from the glass of rum the server had just refilled. I had lost count of how many he’d had, but the flush on his face was undeniable—proof that the liquor was catching up to him.I kept my gelato untouched, more focused on the man across from me. I wanted to speak, to break the silence, but the words refuse

Maximus’ POVAfter staring at Vivienne for a few seconds, I cleared my throat to get her attention. I walked closer and gazed out at Central Park, glowing under the city lights.“Well, you’re finally here. Looks like you’re expecting someone important. What a nice candlelit dinner on the penthouse terrace with the great billionaire Maximus Wallace…” Her tone dripped with sarcasm as she said it.“So, do you really think I’ve lost the ability to find another woman after what happened between us?” I couldn’t stop myself from matching her sarcasm. That’s when I noticed the champagne glass in her hand as she turned to face me. For a brief moment, I caught a flicker of pain in her eyes, but it vanished just as quickly.“I know… I know you can easily get a new woman—dozen, even. But none of them will ever love you the way I did, Max. I can love you without asking for anything in return. I don’t need your money or your wealth. I only need you, Maximus—your body and your soul.” Her voice softe

Maximus’ POV.“Paulo, take a turn and bring me home,” I ordered my driver after ending Winona’s call. I could still hear the panic laced in her voice, and I couldn’t help but wonder. It felt like she was hiding a problem I knew nothing about. Instead of overthinking, I decided to call Brent again. He picked up within seconds.“Hey,” he greeted casually.“Was there any problem at Winona’s house earlier when you went there?” I asked seriously.“I don’t think so. I just met her mother, that’s all,” he replied.“How is her mother? What’s your impression of her character—never mind. I’ll just have Arlo run a background check on her.”“Wait, Max—”“What?” I asked, my brows drawing together.“I don’t think Winona would appreciate you investigating her mother. Maybe you should just take it easy. Get to know them personally. That way, Win might warm up to you again,” he suggested.“A-Alright,” I muttered before ending the call. He had a point. Still, I didn’t like the way he said her name. Was

Winona’s POVThe next morning was my day off, and I had planned to spend it quietly at home with Mason. But the day hadn’t even started properly when an avalanche of flowers and chocolates arrived at my doorstep. There was no card, yet I didn’t need one—I knew instantly they were from Maximus.Mama had been badgering me since then, eager to know who the gifts were from. I ignored her as best as I could, but like now, she was practically glued to my side when another knock echoed from the door.“Who is it, I wonder? Maybe it’s your suitor,” she teased, her tone full of anticipation.I rolled my eyes and pulled the door open, ready to scold another delivery man and send back whatever unnecessary gift he brought. But the words caught in my throat when I saw Brent standing there.“B-Brent?” My voice faltered, and I found myself peeking past him as though expecting Maximus to appear at any moment. But no—he was alone.Brent’s smile was uneasy. “I-It’s only me, Win. Max is busy… he couldn’t

Winona’s POVMy shift at the hotel finally ended, and I headed straight home to the apartment. On the bus ride, I kept rehearsing what I would tell Mason. Just this morning, he was beaming with joy after meeting his father for the first time. But tonight, I would have to explain that he might never see his father again. The very thought of it felt like a knife stabbing me over and over. I don’t want to see my son cry.My phone had been ringing for a while, but I ignored it. Maximus’ name flashed on the screen.“Miss, if you’re not planning to answer, could you turn it off? It’s disturbing,” the elderly woman beside me muttered.“I-I’m sorry,” I said quickly, fumbling to switch it off before leaning against the cold window glass. I shut my eyes tightly, trying to drown out the turmoil inside me.I couldn’t understand what I was feeling. Part of me regretted ever letting him into our lives. And yet, why did it feel like such a waste? Why did it hurt this much?Every time I recalled Maso
