Chapter 1

Author: Flori
I stared hard at my best friend, Laurel Elliot.

"Since all the whipping cream is gone and I've sent you money for all the strawberries, I'm leaving," I said.

After all, survival was my absolute priority in this life. It came before anything else.

But just as I reached the door, Laurel stepped forward to block my exit.

"You used up all the whipping cream, and now you think you can just walk away? What about my strawberry mousse glacee?"

My expression turned cold.

I was immediately reminded of how she had shoved me into the path of a seller's lunging knife in my past life. Now here she was, making my stomach turn by acting all cute and innocent, just like a baby.

I swallowed my burning rage while she puffed out her cheeks and continued her relentless tirade.

"I bought ten whole cartons of organic strawberries just so we could make strawberry mousse glacee today! You turned all my whipping cream into chocolate ganache, and now you're the one throwing a tantrum at me!"

Seeing that she wasn't going to let me leave, I confronted her. "What about you?

"First, you used AI to generate photos of rotten fruit and treated everyone like idiots. Then, you threw the chocolate ganache I made straight into the trash can."

Laurel unbotheredly wrapped her arms around mine. "Cassie, I know you mean well. You're just scared the seller is going to cause me trouble, aren't you?"

I evaded her hand, so it was left hanging in midair. Her expression stiffened briefly.

"But a whole carton of strawberries costs over 40 dollars a basket out there. The seller wanted to charge me that much at first!

"I just chatted with him for a bit, and he agreed to sell it to me for just 20 dollars."

She paused, then continued, "Since he could drop the price by that much, it just proves he was ripping people off in the first place! This smol bean was just trying to protect her own rights."

I pointed at the heap of strawberries. "You were the one who kept pushing for a discount until he finally gave in.

"Then, after buying them, you filed for a refund, claiming he was manipulating the market. Do you have any idea how much the shipping costs are for just ten cartons of strawberries?"

Laurel's eyes widened. "How could you say that about a cutie patootie like me, Cassie? I was just making sure he faces a little consequence."

Her voice pitched high, before she quickly dropped it back into a soft whine.

"You don't understand how so many sellers take advantage of people these days. If this bean weren't smart, she'd get scammed too."

She pulled out her phone and shoved it in my face.

On the screen, a video showed a carton of strawberries bursting open for no apparent reason. Their inner flesh was pitch-black with a sticky, slimy liquid oozing out, and they looked completely rotten.

I was so speechless that I almost laughed, but I managed to hold it in and keep a straight face.

"Doesn't it look realistic? The platform's customer service will definitely approve the refund request the second they see this," Laurel added.

"As for the chocolate ganache, you were the one who used my whipping cream without permission first. I didn't even hold a grudge against you for that."

I shoved Laurel away. "Since the ingredients are gone, let's make the strawberry mousse glacee another day. Midsummer Festival is still a few days away anyway."

She looked momentarily stunned before saying, "But you used to do whatever I asked you to."

"So?" I calmly refuted.

Laurel stepped closer, grinning. "So, you're a certified five-star pastry chef, and this smol bean just really wants to eat the strawberry mousse glacee you make."

Dad let out a cold laugh and cut off the rest of Laurel's pathetic excuses before she could even say a word. When she realized her tears got her nowhere with Mom and Dad, she turned on Dave and demanded, "Why didn't you just kill her the moment you got here? Why the hell did you drag this out for so long?"Looking at her, I burst out laughing. And before I could speak, Dave beat me to it."Even before I arrived, Ms. Stafford laid out the truth to me. She called, apologized on your behalf, and told me that her best friend was just being insensible. She asked me not to vent my rage on innocent people."She paid me for the strawberries right then and there without missing a single penny."On top of that, she sent me an extra 500 thousand and said she knew how tough it was to put three kids through school. She told me to use the money to pull my family through tough times."After he explained, a wave of stunned gasps rippled through the crowd. But Laurel scoffed. She suddenly snappe

Seeing Laurel's reaction, I started laughing at her unbelievable ambition. How had I never noticed that she could be this shameless? But now, the question deep in my heart was finally answered.Laurel had orchestrated this entire setup to ruin me just by exploiting her status as my best friend over the years, which had earned her my parents' deep affection. And that was why she had grown so greedy that she was even thinking of trying to replace me.I smiled and returned the phone to Dave before turning around to slap her hard across the face. While she reeled from the shock of the blow, I backhanded her across her other cheek. She clutched her face, and huge teardrops started rolling down her face."What gives you the right to slap me?" she rasped. Her voice had lost its usual sickening sweet tone."It's because you're still lying."Dave took the chance to raise his phone and show the order page to everyone present. "Take a good look, everyone. All the phone numbers, delive

"If you don't correct Cassie's attitude now, what will she turn into later?" Laurel added.Mom and Dad said nothing. All they did was frown and look at me. The look in their eyes seemed to ask, "What on earth is wrong with this best friend of yours?"When Laurel noticed their reaction, she adopted a concerned, earnest tone and continued, "Mr. and Mrs. Stafford, I know how much you love Cassie. But I'm afraid something terrible will happen if you keep spoiling her this way."With that, she raised her hand and wiped at the corner of her eyes. Her voice softened to a whimper like that of an innocent victim."If you don't have the heart to discipline her, then don't bother about it anymore. After all, I have always been right by your side all these years, tagging along like a real daughter."If you feel like her morals and character are failing, I can take her place and stay by your side."I sucked in a sharp breath, but Laurel didn't even seem to notice my gaze. If anything, she spo

"Cassie, please stop doing this, okay?"Laurel sniffled, and her soft voice was shaking."So many people are here watching us right now. Are you sure you're going to pin everything on this smol bean again?"You're the one who wanted to make the strawberry mousse glacee and messed with the supplies. Now that Dave has come to our door to demand a refund, you're still trying to blame a cutiepie like me?"All you have to do is pay him and apologize. It's not like it'll cost you your life."I said nothing and continued staring at her, watching her calculated act. After she delivered her script, tears started dropping down her cheeks."Cassie, your family is so well off, and you've had everything you could ever want since we were kids. Why can't you show a little consideration for other people?"Your mom and dad gave you the best education, yet you don't have a single shred of empathy. Just think of how disappointed they'll be if they find out what you did."As she rambled on, she s

I stared at Laurel and said nothing.Sniffling, she dragged herself up from the floor, her feet wobbling as she edged closer to me."I know you're scared, but when you make a mistake, you have to own up to it," she whimpered. "Dave is already here. Hurry up and get on your knees to apologize to him, pay him his money, and maybe it isn't too late to get an apology."Looking at her, I realized she was determined to pin this whole mess on me. She truly was the type who wouldn't learn her lesson until she was completely ruined.Dave's eyes darted back and forth between Laurel and me, the hesitation on his face growing more obvious by the second.Laurel immediately seized the chance to beg me and weep."Stop being so stubborn, Cassie. Just get on your knees and apologize to Dave."Give him a proper apology, clear the bill for the strawberries, and I will help plead your case for you."Without waiting for my response, she turned to Dave."Please don't be mad, Dave. Cassie just mad

My gaze instinctively drifted to the sharp knife in Dave's hand. The suffocating terror of being shoved toward that knife in my past life instantly flooded my mind. My legs felt heavy, and my back was drenched in a cold sweat. But now, I forced myself to calm down, repeated to myself that I would not suffer a brutal death like in my past life, and told myself that the tables had turned. After all, I had explained everything to Dave the moment I read the chat log. When I snapped back to reality, I watched as Dave bypassed me and carried the knife straight toward Laurel, whose expression changed in pure terror at the sight. Her legs went weak as she scrambled backward on all fours."Dave, p-please don't come any closer! You have the wrong person! I'm not Cassie!"Her voice cracked in sheer panic, and her forced, cutesy whine shattered into pieces.I stood in the center of the living room and watched her pathetic state with cold detachment, not feeling the slightest shred of sympa
