RIVER
Once upon a time, my family and the Rutherfords got along.
In fact, my parents were part of something called The Aegis - a group of the most highly respected and skilled warrior hunters specially selected to protect the Royal family.
The day things went wrong was the day The Fae Fox struck, bringing an army of night creatures to attack the Palace. Back then, the Alpha King of Calmaria was still alive and it was my parents’ duty to protect him.
But I made a mistake.
I didn't stay hidden like my mother had ordered me to and when the Fae Fox attacked me, my mother had been forced to make a choice on who to save - me or the King.
Years later and I still wish she chose the King.
Just when I thought I had run out of reasons why I did not deserve to exist, tonight topped it all off, giving me the resolve that one of these days, I will end my miserable life.
A world without River Scarrow will surely be better, right?
A tear rolled down my face as I smiled bitterly.
My family lived on a farm, half a mile away from the Palace and luckily for me, my room was on the ground floor.
All I had to do was sneak in the way I snuck out and I'll be fine.
But as soon as I climbed into my room, I immediately sensed a presence that made my body jolt and my heart skitter in fear.
Instantly, my dark room flared to life as someone turned on the lamp and I found none other than my father sitting on a sofa opposite my bed. Half his upper body was shrouded in darkness, leaving only his powerful legs revealed and I didn’t miss the large bottle of whiskey sitting on his lap.
“Where were you coming from?” His deep powerful voice queried and I didn’t overlook the slur in it.
He was drunk again.
My brain fumbled for the right way to table the truth and that led to me stuttering and shifting from one foot to the other. “Uhm…”
“ANSWER ME!” He suddenly sat up, his twisted face coming into the light.
I flinched, hot tears pouring out of my face. Could my day not get any worse? Does he not care that today was my birthday?
“I went to the Luna Queen’s Birthday.” I murmured just enough for him to hear.
Silence.
“And why would you go there?!”
I fumbled for answers again. “Paloma told me I could come.”
“Paloma told you you could go?” My father asked in a way that pointed out my stupidity. My cheeks grew hot in shame. “Haven’t I warned you several times to stay away from the Rutherfords?” He rose to his feet, and I had to crane my neck up a bit to take in all six feet of him.
I had no excuse. The warning was one that had been drilled into me since I was a kid but my love for Densmore couldn’t stop me from going. I had always felt drawn to that silent god.
Somewhere in the distance, the skies rumbled while my body trembled.
“Haven’t you done enough?!” My father’s voice grew increasingly menacing and I subconsciously gripped the hem of my purple dress. “Haven’t you taken enough from me?!”
The skies rumbled again.
“You took my wife from me!” He stumbled forward, his voice cracking. “You ruined my reputation. My career! Brought disgrace on this family and still won’t let me have peace!”
Tears spilled down my face.
The Rutherfords never forgave my family for the death of the Alpha King and my family never forgave me.
“I am sorry, Daddy.” I burst into tears, my heart pounding in anticipation of what to come.
One minute, my father stood there, just staring at me, the next the bottle flew through the air and shattered against my head.
I staggered backwards, panic like thunder in my veins. My vision swimmed and the moment I fell on my hands and knees, white hot pain shot through me. A scream left my mouth as I realized I had knelt on a piece of broken glass and just as I fell on my butt, I saw my father storming towards me, his belt already in his hand.
“You are a menace!” He growled, and although I scampered back on my hands and feet, I couldn’t get far away enough.
“Father, please!” I begged, raising a hand to meet his belt and when pain flashed hot on my skin, I screamed again.
His assault continued and the skies rumbled over and over till heavy rain fell, drowning out my cries. I covered my head, cowering into a fetus, as I endured his lashes and from the blur in my eyes, I saw my brother watching through the crack in the door.
“Help me, please!” I begged through our mindlink but his eyes grew colder before they disappeared from the door.
I had no idea my heart could break all over again and as my father kicked and abused me, I prayed to the Goddess for death. My vision got darker as I used every fiber of my being to wish and hope that I would pass away in this moment, never having to see the light of another day.
But something happened, right before darkness snatched my consciousness.
The door of my bedroom fell off its hinges as if someone kicked it with great force and when lightning struck again, illuminating my room with a bright white light, I could have sworn that the man who swaggered in was Densmore Rutherford.
RIVER“I am really sorry this is happening.” I heard the Queen say and my stomach twisted in fear. Immediately, Paloma and I rushed to hide behind a giant vase near the staircase. “I will make sure every single person is severely punished for trespassing your lands.” The Queen finished, coming into the living room and standing just a few feet away from where we hid. “I’m afraid that won’t be necessary.” A male voice answered, and instantly my eyes closed in bliss. It was a voice so soothing and seductive like a lover’s whisper, scratching my brain in all the right ways. “They are all dead.”My eyes bulged wide open, not at the deadly message per sey but at the way he said it like he was amused or pleased in some way. Peeping through the small opening behind where we hid, I saw a man so tall, my neck craned up. He had his back to us, and he was dressed in clothes that did nothing to hide his small waist, buff legs and wide back. But that wasn’t what caught my attention. It was the
RIVERThe image of my mother’s neck being ripped open jolted me awake and I woke up to light blue eyes glaring at me.In a flash I remembered everything. Sitting up in bed, I stared wide-eyed at my surroundings and nothing made a lick of sense. I was in the most luxurious bedroom I had ever seen, richly decorated with themes of black and beige. Was I dead yet? If so, why was my best friend here?I turned to Paloma who stood with her arms folded across her chest, her demeanor cold. This was surely not her bedroom. “What happened? Where am I?” I croaked. Her stern face seemed to cool as her arms fell by her sides. “You’re in my man’s bedroom. He brought you here because you’ve had a rough night.”I blinked in surprise. Densmore brought me here? To his bedroom? His bed? How? Suddenly, a memory flashed in my mind’s eye and I remembered my door bursting off its hinges and Densmore walking in shirtless, looking glorious as ever. His hair had been matted to his skull, his eyes, a ri
DENSMORESOME MINUTES EARLIEREver since River left, I had known no peace.Instead, my wolf had whined and purred, until I had to excuse myself from the party, Unfortunately for me, Paloma followed and I wondered why she didn't follow after her best friend.“Baby, please talk to me!” Paloma demanded and I sighed just as I reached my bedroom door and turned around. “I want to be alone.” I mindlinked and Paloma looked at me like I had lost my damn mind. “Den, you’ve just been through a traumatic experience. You need someone to be there for you.” She reached out, her hands rubbing my collarbone. For the first time in forever, her touch made me uncomfortable, so I grabbed her hand and peeled them off of me. “I’m fine. I want to be alone. You should check on your friend.” I insisted and didn’t wait for her reply before going in and closing the doors behind me. After hearing her walk away, I heaved a sigh and crossed the room to my balcony while removing my suit jacket and tie. Then

RIVERThe hall became so silent that the shuffle of feet could be heard. Then the Luna Queen suddenly appeared beside her son, regaled in a black chiffon dress that pooled around her feet and accentuated her figure. With a neck clad in diamonds, Ruby Rutherford was a fierce type of beauty - a dark feminine who instilled fear with a look just like her son. “Your Majesty.” I immediately lowered myself in a bow.“What are you doing here?!” I heard her snarl and before I could raise my head, she grabbed my hair so hard, my scalp screamed in pain. People laughed but suddenly, a snarl rippled through the hall, silencing everyone and causing the Luna to still.I raised my head and to my surprise, I found Densmore baring his teeth at his mother. Her brows furrowed in confusion.“What's going on, Denny?” She asked softly and whatever she must heard via mindlink was enough to make her release me from her death grip. I rubbed my scalp, biting down my wince, then Paloma came forward to help me
RIVER“Did you hear? The Whitegrove brothers are at it again. They murdered about a dozen people last night for crossing their borders. They are so mean!”I hid behind my best friend as she gossiped with other people. The Whitegrove brothers were from a nearby Kingdom named Shadowvale and I had heard awful things about them, including how they used someone’s head to play soccer. ‘I shouldn’t be here.’ I thought as I nursed a glass of wine I had no business holding. Glancing at the giant, gold clock somewhere to my left, I realized, I had just about two minutes to become of legal age to drink. I fervently focused on that, ignoring the disgusted stares I got from people around. Making a turn, my gaze caught on my reflection in a silverware tray and the feeling of disgust also settled within me. The girl staring back had a terrible scar running from the left side of her forehead down her half open nose, half missing lips to the right side of her jawline. Although she could see fairly
