Chapter 1

The moment I took the water, Caleb Foster's smile deepened. I could almost feel how intensely his gaze burned against my hand.

His inner voice was still chattering away.

[Open it already. Drink it. I'm going crazy waiting. Just one sip and that five thousand dollars is mine. Those sneakers I've wanted forever are finally going to be mine!]

I looked up at Caleb. He had a perfectly gentle smile on his face, but the eagerness in his eyes was impossible to hide.

I sneered inwardly. Outwardly, I stayed calm and gave him a faint smile.

"Thanks. How much was it? I'll pay you back."

My tone was flat, without the slightest emotion.

Caleb waved a hand, his smile growing brighter, his voice warm and familiar.

"Come on, we're roommates. We see each other every day. It's just a bottle of water. Talking about money makes it weird. Drink it. I just took it out of the fridge, so it's perfect for the heat."

[Pay me back? Are you stupid? As long as you drink it, your five-thousand-dollar scholarship is all mine. Two dollars for five thousand. That's an insane profit.]

Without showing anything, I swept my gaze over him.

He was wearing a new limited-edition hoodie today. I had seen it online before. The original price was over two thousand, but resellers had pushed it close to six thousand.

On his wrist was the newest watch. Another roommate had looked it up once. It sold for more than six thousand at the official store.

His family was far better off than mine, yet he still wanted to steal the money meant to keep my grandfather alive.

I set the water near the edge of my desk and said evenly, "I'm not thirsty right now. I'll drink it later."

Caleb's smile froze for a split second, but he quickly covered it and nodded as if nothing had happened.

"Sure. Keep it there. Drink it whenever you want."

Just then, his inner voice slipped clearly into my ears again, letting me understand the rules of that bizarre system.

[This stupid rule is such a pain. Why can't it trigger the moment he accepts something from me?]

[And after he drinks it, it still takes two hours for his money to transfer into my account. So slow.]

[At least the system can automatically rewrite bank records and leave no trace. That's not bad.]

I glanced down at the bottle in my hand, a cold glint passing through my eyes.

You want to swallow my life-saving money? Then I'll let you taste the price of greed.

Right in front of Caleb, I slipped the bottle into the side pocket of my backpack.

"I'm heading to my part-time job. Bye."

I shouldered my bag and spoke casually.

Caleb watched me leave and said gently, "Don't work too hard. Remember to rest too."

[Great. He took the water with him. As long as he drinks it later, the five thousand dollars will be mine.]

[Once the money hits my account, I'm ordering those shoes right away. I won't have to stare at other people wearing them anymore.]

I didn't look back. I only gave a faint sound of acknowledgment and pushed open the dorm door.

When I reached the cafeteria kitchen, one of the cafeteria ladies chatted with me.

"This soup is something one of the big alumni donors specifically requested for today's alumni event."

He looked at the transcript and certificates of honor I handed over, his eyes full of approval."I was right about you. These years of hard work have brought the best possible return."I stood properly and thanked him sincerely."Because of your funding and guidance, Mr. Bennett, I was able to complete my studies in peace and earn this opportunity.""Helping someone worthy is never a waste." Mr. Bennett smiled faintly."Work hard and stay grounded. The company will give you enough room to grow."After joining the company, I maintained the same diligence I had in school. I polished my skills seriously and accumulated experience, and soon found my footing in the role, earning recognition from senior colleagues and leaders. On weekends, I still returned to the hospital to accompany my grandfather, who had entered the final stage of rehabilitation.I happened to meet a man from the same hospital who had come for a follow-up check. Back when my grandfather was hospitalized, he often

My grandfather listened quietly. His cloudy eyes instantly filled with tears. He raised a hand and gently wiped the corners of his eyes, his voice choked despite his efforts to control it."Someone up there is finally looking out for us... My Julian has been sensible since he was little. While other children acted spoiled and played, you suffered with me. You knew how to save money from such a young age and carried every hardship alone."I used to be so afraid I would drag you down. I was afraid my medical bills would delay your studies. I couldn't even sleep peacefully at night."Seeing his reddened eyes made my heart sour. I quickly comforted him softly."Grandpa, it's all over now. From now on, just focus on treatment and recovery. Don't think about anything else."I won't need to squeeze in several part-time jobs between classes anymore. I can attend class properly, prepare for exams, and visit you at the hospital on weekends.""Good, good." He nodded again and again. The te

My fingers paused slightly, but I said nothing.Mr. Bennett continued."I've looked at your transcript and school record. You are diligent, grounded, and sensible. In hardship, you don't complain or become extreme. Even when your roommate maliciously plotted against you, you held onto your principles and stayed rational."After years of entrepreneurship, young people like you are the ones I admire most."When he finished, Mr. Bennett looked at me seriously, his tone solemn."Julian, I have decided to personally fund your education long-term."I jerked my head up, shock filling my eyes.Mr. Bennett smiled and explained,"I will personally cover all of your grandfather's future hospitalization, rehabilitation, and medical expenses until he fully recovers."On top of that, I will cover your remaining tuition, housing, and living expenses through university, so you no longer need to run between medical bills and tuition by working part-time."Not only that, he added,"When you n

"So Julian has been quietly working part-time all along. That scholarship was his grandfather's life-saving money. That's heartbreaking.""Caleb is too vicious. How can someone's heart be that rotten? He even tried to steal his roommate's life-saving money.""He usually acts so gentle and kind, but behind the scenes he schemed against people. You really can't judge a person by their face."When I walked into the dorm, the atmosphere was especially quiet. The other two roommates were seated at their desks. When they saw me return, their eyes were full of guilt and awkwardness.Tyler Brooks was the first to stand. He walked up to me, his tone sincere and ashamed."Julian, I'm sorry."I looked at him without speaking.Tyler lowered his head, his face full of regret."This morning was my fault. I spoke up for Caleb without knowing right from wrong. I even accused you of being ungrateful and fake. I misjudged him and was too hasty."Only now do I know Caleb isn't gentle and kind l

In the dorm group chat and class group chat, Tyler Brooks took the initiative to speak up. Every sentence was about distancing himself from Caleb and exposing Caleb's true nature."I thought Caleb had been acting way too vain lately. He kept comparing luxury items and spending money like water. I was blind to speak for him before."He always deliberately buttered people up and gave out snacks and drinks. Turns out it wasn't kindness at all. He had ulterior motives."Julian is so pitiful. That scholarship was his grandfather's life-saving medical money, and his roommate still tried to plot against him. Who wouldn't feel chilled by that?"For a time, everyone saw through Caleb's gentle, friendly facade and recognized the greed and malice underneath. The good relationships and warm persona he had carefully maintained for so long shattered completely. At five in the afternoon, the cybercrime department and the bank's technical team completed the final trace investigation. The techni

"This morning, Caleb took the initiative to place a bottle of water on my desk and repeatedly urged me to drink it."After I returned from my part-time job, he offered me bread and kept urging me to eat."I found it strange that he was so unusually enthusiastic today, but I didn't think much of it at the time. I politely refused the bread and kept the water in my backpack."As soon as I finished speaking, Caleb's anxious, disbelieving inner voice rang clearly in my ears.[What does Julian mean by this? Why did he have to say it out loud?][I clearly only gave him water. By logic, only his money should've been transferred. Why did everyone in the school's money flood into my account?][Did he already know about my Transfer System? Did he do it on purpose? Impossible. Absolutely impossible. How could he know about something like that?][It's over. I'm completely finished. I can't explain this...]My fingers curled slightly at my side, but my face remained calm, revealing nothing.
