Chapter 2

Author: Madu Madu
Early the next morning, a video suddenly popped up in the class group chat.

In it, a few girls had me cornered against the bathroom sinks. Melissa Bennett yanked on my mask strap and asked with a laugh, "How hideous do you have to be to keep your face covered all day long?"

In the next second, the Hal in the video shoved her away and pulled me behind him.

His face cold, he warned, "Touch her one more time. I dare you."

The video cut off there.

Right after that, Melissa posted: [A graduation keepsake! Reliving the legendary moment Hal the Great Hero rescued the damsel.]

The group chat instantly came alive.

[Back then, I really thought Hal liked her.]

[Who would've guessed it was just a bet?]

[Shh, don't spill it, or there won't be a show tonight.]

That last message was quickly unsent.

But I'd already taken a screenshot.

Melissa tagged me next: [Gina, make sure you get to the gala early tonight. Hal has a surprise ready for you.]

I didn't call her out. I just replied: [Okay.]

After I put down my phone, Mom knocked and came in.

She was holding a long dark green dress. "Your dress arrived. Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?"

I could see the worry in her eyes, and I shook my head.

For years now, because of my condition, she'd turned down work and taken me to countless doctors.

She'd even taken down every full-length mirror in the house, afraid that seeing my reflection would remind me of the mob that had cornered me three years ago and sent me spiraling.

But I didn't want to hide anymore.

"Mom, I can handle this."

Mom smoothed my hair, her eyes turning red. "My daughter was never meant to hide."

Just before I left, the dean of students called me.

"Gina, the promotional video for the graduation gala has been edited. Are you sure you're okay with us playing it tonight?"

That video was a graduation tribute short the school had invited me to shoot.

The set had been cleared during filming. Only the female photographer and Dr. Taylor had stayed.

On camera, I wasn't wearing my mask.

I had originally planned to refuse to let it be shown publicly.

Then, last night, I changed my mind.

"Play it as planned."

The dean sounded surprised. "But you said before that it would only be kept in the school's internal archive."

"That's not necessary anymore."

I looked at the crumpled latte label on my desk. "Also, could you schedule it to play right after Hal's act?"

"Sure."

I hung up, and the moment I got to school, Melissa and her crew surrounded me.

She looked me up and down, her gaze settling on my face. "Still wearing it tonight?

"Isn't Hal going to confess to you? You can't exactly kiss him through a mask, can you?"

The people around her burst out laughing.

I lowered my head and said nothing.

Thinking I was scared, Melissa deliberately reached out to yank it off.

But before her fingertips could touch me, Hal grabbed her wrist. "I warned you."

Melissa played along and raised both hands. "Fine, fine, fine. She's yours. I won't touch her."

As she said it, she winked at Hal.

In that instant, I clearly saw a smile flicker at the corner of his mouth.

By the time he turned to me, his expression had gone gentle again. "She didn't scare you, did she?"

I shook my head.

He took my hand as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "They're rehearsing in the auditorium. I'll take you over."

All the way there, people kept glancing at us.

Hal seemed to enjoy the attention.

When we reached the auditorium entrance, he suddenly bent down and murmured in my ear, "Gina, tonight's the last time we'll see each other as high school students. I don't want any regrets."

I asked softly, "So you absolutely have to see my face?"

He paused, then smiled. "It's not that I have to see it. I want everyone to know that no matter what you look like, I'll still like you."

He said it with so much feeling.

Yet from behind the auditorium's side door came Melissa's barely suppressed laughter.

I pretended not to hear it.

I simply slid my hand out of his. "Okay. Tonight, I'll let everyone see."

The year I graduated from my degree program, I was admitted directly into my university's graduate program. My research focus was trauma intervention for adolescents. My first published article was about "hero manipulation" in school bullying. Some abusers create danger, then step in as protectors, making their victims dependent on them. After the article came out, I received a lot of letters. Some said they finally understood why they couldn't bring themselves to leave the person who'd hurt them.Someone also asked me: [If the person who hurt you has really changed, can you go back?]I replied: [He can change. And you can still choose not to forgive him.]After the commencement ceremony, I ran into Hal at the school gate.Several years had passed, and he'd shed the swagger of his teenage years. When he saw me, he stopped where he stood."Long time no see.""Long time no see."His gaze dropped to the diploma in my hand. In September, I started at Carrigan University. On move-in day, the campus was full of freshmen snapping photos on their phones. The sea of cameras still made me tense up on instinct.I put on my mask and stood rooted to the spot for a long time.A guy suddenly walked over and blocked the cameras on one side of me. "Hey, are you feeling okay?"I shook my head.He didn't ask about my face, and he didn't take it upon himself to do anything for me.He just stepped back half a pace, leaving me plenty of space. "The School of Psychology is to the east. If you're headed the same way, we can walk together."Later, I found out his name was Ben Gayle, an upperclassman one year ahead of me.He'd recognized me from the internet but had never mentioned it to anyone. He never said things like "You should be a little braver," and he never pushed me to take off my mask. When it got crowded, he would ask first, "Do you want me to stay with you, or would you rather be alone?"My treatment w

"Carrigan University's admissions team has already contacted the school. They're hoping you'll apply to their psychology program."That was exactly where I wanted to go.Once the news spread, the media came to the school again. Some wanted to interview me about my looks. Some wanted me to talk about being bullied. One company even offered me a huge fee to endorse their face masks.I turned them all down.I didn't want to be known as "the stunning beauty" or "the bullying victim" anymore. My face wasn't a badge of honor, and neither were my scars. The day I finished my university applications, I went to one last graduation dinner. The people who'd once joined Melissa in jeering at me came ove

After the investigation results came out, Melissa's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, showed up at my house. They brought gifts and a lawyer, and they stood outside our door for two hours."It was just kids messing around. There's no need to ruin her future over it." As she spoke, Mrs. Bennett tried to press a bank card into my mom's hand."There's twenty-eight thousand dollars on this. All Gina has to do is put out a statement saying those videos were a rehearsal..."Mom tossed the card straight out the door. "Your daughter's future matters, but my daughter's three years don't?"It went quiet outside the door for a moment. Then Melissa suddenly burst in. "Gina, isn't winning enough for you? My guaranteed admission has already been revoked, and the school is still going to punish me. Are you not going to be satisfied until you kill me?"I started recording on my phone. "Want me to hand that line over to the school too?"She shut her mouth immediately.Mr. Bennett shot her a furio

At the same moment, the big screen lit up.[Gorham High School Graduation Tribute: Youth Without Limits.]The emcee picked up the microphone. "A special thank-you to Gina McCann from Class 12A for starring in this year's graduation promotional video."The whole auditorium broke into an uproar.Melissa whipped her head around. "Gina? She doesn't even have the guts to show her face. How could she possibly be in a promo video?"On screen, early morning sunlight streamed through the library.A girl in a white dress stood by the window, her slender back to the camera. The camera slowly moved closer.Hearing someone call out, the girl turned around. Her black hair slid off her shoulders, revealing a face with nothing covering it at all.Her features were cool and refined, her nose delicate, and the faint beauty mark at the outer corner of her eye stood out in the sunlight.A wave of gasps swept through the auditorium."She's so pretty...""Who is that?""The emcee just said it's
