Chapter 4

Author: Madu Madu
"I don't want to take it off anymore."

Hal's expression darkened, and he switched off the microphone. "What's that supposed to mean? Didn't you agree to it just fine last night?"

He grabbed my wrist, anger already creeping into his voice. "I didn't spend all this time preparing just for you to back out at the last minute."

I looked at him. "And if I insist on keeping it on?"

Hal stared at me for a few seconds, then threatened coldly, "Then the next time you get bullied, don't come running to me. Without me protecting you, you know exactly what Melissa and the others will do to you."

With that, he switched the microphone back on, his gentle smile returning. "Gina, stop messing around. Everyone's waiting for you."

I glanced down at the time.

Seven-forty.

It was about time for my surprise.

"Gina, how much longer are you going to drag this out?"

Melissa walked onto the stage holding up her phone, the camera pointed right at me.

Over a thousand people had already flooded into her live stream, and the comments were all urging me to take off my mask.

"Hal's done so much for you, and you won't even show your face? Or do you know you're so ugly that you're afraid you'll scare him off?"

Laughter rose from the audience.

Hal didn't stop her. He only lowered his voice and warned me, "Don't make me do it myself."

I raised my eyes to his. "Didn't you say you'd like me no matter what I look like?"

"Yes." He answered quickly, but his eyes were full of impatience. "That's exactly why you shouldn't string me along."

Melissa opened the gift box and shoved the mirror into his hand. "Once she's done, make sure she gets a good look at herself."

Someone immediately shouted, "Hal, take it off for her! The betting's about to close!"

Hal ran out of patience. He set down the roses and advanced on me, step by step. "I'm asking you one last time. Are you taking it off yourself, or am I doing it for you?"

I pressed my hand over my mask and backed away.

The laughter in the audience grew louder.

Hal seized my wrist. "Gina, that's enough. Do you really think anyone besides me would ever accept you? I spent three years with you. You should be grateful."

This time, he didn't even bother to turn away from the microphone.

His voice carried clearly through the entire auditorium.

The audience went quiet for a moment.

Melissa hurried to smooth things over. "Hal's just frustrated with her. Who told her to keep being so dramatic?"

Hal also realized he'd lost his composure, and he softened his voice. "Gina, I just want you to be a little braver. Be good and take off the mask."

He reached out again.

Just as his fingertips were about to touch me, the auditorium lights suddenly went out.

The year I graduated from my degree program, I was admitted directly into my university's graduate program. My research focus was trauma intervention for adolescents. My first published article was about "hero manipulation" in school bullying. Some abusers create danger, then step in as protectors, making their victims dependent on them. After the article came out, I received a lot of letters. Some said they finally understood why they couldn't bring themselves to leave the person who'd hurt them.Someone also asked me: [If the person who hurt you has really changed, can you go back?]I replied: [He can change. And you can still choose not to forgive him.]After the commencement ceremony, I ran into Hal at the school gate.Several years had passed, and he'd shed the swagger of his teenage years. When he saw me, he stopped where he stood."Long time no see.""Long time no see."His gaze dropped to the diploma in my hand. "Hey, are you feeling okay?"I shook my head.He didn't ask about my face, and he didn't take it upon himself to do anything for me.He just stepped back half a pace, leaving me plenty of space. "The School of Psychology is to the east. If you're headed the same way, we can walk together."Later, I found out his name was Ben Gayle, an upperclassman one year ahead of me.He'd recognized me from the internet but had never mentioned it to anyone. He never said things like "You should be a little braver," and he never pushed me to take off my mask. When it got crowded, he would ask first, "Do you want me to stay with you, or would you rather be alone?"My treatment w

One company even offered me a huge fee to endorse their face masks.I turned them all down.I didn't want to be known as "the stunning beauty" or "the bullying victim" anymore. My face wasn't a badge of honor, and neither were my scars. The day I finished my university applications, I went to one last graduation dinner. The people who'd once joined Melissa in jeering at me came ove

After the investigation results came out, Melissa's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, showed up at my house. They brought gifts and a lawyer, and they stood outside our door for two hours."It was just kids messing around. There's no need to ruin her future over it." As she spoke, Mrs. Bennett tried to press a bank card into my mom's hand."There's twenty-eight thousand dollars on this. All Gina has to do is put out a statement saying those videos were a rehearsal..."Mom tossed the card straight out the door. "Your daughter's future matters, but my daughter's three years don't?"It went quiet outside the door for a moment. Then Melissa suddenly burst in. "Gina, isn't winning enough for you? My guaranteed admission has already been revoked, and the school is still going to punish me. Are you not going to be satisfied until you kill me?"I started recording on my phone. "Want me to hand that line over to the school too?"She shut her mouth immediately.Mr. Bennett shot her a furio
